Research from the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland school of medicine is suggesting that women who suffer from migraines accompanied by visual symptoms (often called an aura) have a slight increased risk of stroke, especially if they are smokers, and/or use oral contraceptives.
It’s been over nine years since Planet Chiropractic began organizing news articles appearing on the website into an archived format. A reporter for a national newspaper recently asked me if I knew how many authors have provided articles to Planet Chiropractic and I didn’t know the exact answer. I estimated it was around 100 that have been published. I decided to do a search today through some author archives and I still don’t have an exact number of authors that have been published but I do have a much better idea than I did before the question was asked. What I discovered were submissions from approximately 70 chiropractic authors, a dozen non-chiropractors, and 14 organizations, including three chiropractic colleges and three national chiropractic associations.
In 2 years I will have been a chiropractor for 50 years. Have I seen and learned anything? Yes, I found new chiropractors are fat already, lack motivation, and are willing to do whatever it takes to make a buck. That means treating symptoms, and or disease any way you can, with whatever seems to be popular.

X Games 13 kicks off today at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles and the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The annual X Games is the premier action sports event in the world and it features athletes from across the planet competing for medals and prize money in sports such as MOTO X, BMX freestyle, Skateboarding, and Surfing. The 2007 Tour de France is over, with 24 year-old American Discovery Channel cyclist Alberto Contador claiming victory, in the three-week cycling race. Contador is the youngest tour champion since Jan Ullrich of Germany won the Tour de France in 1997. Contador’s time was 23 seconds better than Cadel Evans of Australia, making it the second narrowest win in the tour’s 104 year history.
It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Superstar singer Beyonce took a fall down a flight of stairs Tuesday at a concert in Orlando, Florida. Videos have been appearing all over the Web from concert attendees that captured the fall on their handheld recording devices. According to a least one report, Beyonce asked fans not to post videos of the fall to YouTube, Google’s popular video web site (many have since been removed).
It’s been a hot summer for chiropractic related searches on the Internet. The month of July is nearly over, but the expected drop in website traffic as a result of increased summer activities, has not yet occurred. There’s no telling what will happen in August 2007.

There are mixed reviews in today’s news regarding yesterday’s CNN/YouTube Democratic presidential debates. Some have touted the events as groundbreaking and historic and others have called them more evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. The event was a mixing of old media (television) and new media (internet) in a format that had not been done previously in the area of presidential debates.
About 400 people will be gathering at the Swedish-American Hall on Market Street in San Francisco on Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22 to reinforce community involvement around one of the world’s fastest growing open-source software platforms, known as WordPress. The meeting is known as WordCamp, and it’s the second annual event of its kind.
Monday night was chiropractic night on major television networks in the United States. The evening started out at 8 p.m. prime time on the CW Network (KTLA in Los Angeles) with Everybody Hates Chris and a repeat episode titled: Everybody Hates Thanksgiving (originally aired on November 20, 2006). The episode features Wayne Brady in his role as Uncle Louis, the chiropractor. Everyone is happy to see Uncle Louis and the entire family gets adjusted before having Thanksgiving dinner. 8:30 p.m. we change stations to CBS (channel 2 in Los Angeles) for a repeat episode of the New Adventures of Old Christine. The first chiropractic adjustment was made in Davenport Iowa, by a man named DD Palmer, way back in 1895. It was the adjustment heard around the world, as the spinal mobilization performed by Palmer, resulted in a deaf janitor by the name of Harvey Lillard, being able to regain his hearing.

Michael Moore was recently on CNN to talk about his latest film “SICKO” and you can view the segment via youtube. Before CNN host Wolf Blitzer allowed Michael Moore to speak, CNN aired a four minute pre-recorded segment called a “Sicko Reality Check” where chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, went over some of the facts Michael Moore presented in the film.
News reports began appearing yesterday that Apple may be planning to build a cheaper and smaller version of the iPhone, following the slim and sleek modeling design of the iPod nano. According to reports, Apple is silent on the subject. I’ve got to admit that I thought the headlines were a hoax, since the only nano iPhone I’ve seen has been on David Letterman.
Toxicopathy is a new word to me, but one I believe we will all be hearing about more and more. According to Dorland”s Medical Dictionary (1993) toxicopathy means “any disease caused by a poison.” The same book defines poison as “any substance taken into the body by ingestion, inhalation, injection or absorption that interferes with normal physiological functions.”
Happy 4th of July 2007 America! Independence Day is upon us, a birthday celebration of the day the United States claimed independence from Britain. The US is a nation made up of diverse and dynamic people. Sometimes I skim through news articles so rapidly that I misread headlines. One part of my mind may be moving faster than I have a chance to process the information or I may simply be conditioned to read what I expect to see. It’s not uncommon for me to view headlines like “vacation policies must be changed” or “departments to fill vacancies” while my mind is doing a word twist resulting in me initially seeing words like “vaccination policies” and “fill vaccines.” I viewed some headlines on an Internet news page today that I thought read “medical terrorists” prompting me to do a double take and check the headlines again.
The importance of good nutrition for good health is not exactly news. Over 2,000 years ago Hippocrates advised, “Let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food.” But not until 1757 did Scottish physician James Lind become the first person to demonstrate a direct link between a major illness and a specific nutrient. Using one of the first controlled medical experiments in history, Lind showed that sailors supplied with citrus fruits and sauerkraut were able to avoid the telltale signs of scurvy: bleeding gums, rough skin, muscle weakness, poor wound healing, anemia and death.
It’s good news for tech folks, an even greater news for chiropractic tech folks, the greatly anticipated Apple iPhone goes on sale Friday. According to reports on several websites, and the presence of a new URL titled reader.mac.com, it looks as though the Apple iPhone is going to have its own RSS interface.
Bruce Willis, the man who starred in the greatest action movie of all time, is at it again, and he’s still doing his own stunts. The film, “Live Free or Die Hard”, opens nationwide in theaters this Wednesday, June 27, 2007. It’s the actor’s fourth in a series of Die Hard films, with the 1988 release recently being named “Greatest Action Movie of All Time” by Entertainment Weekly.
A fish out of water and a human without water are not so very different. A fish can survive outside water for a few minutes, while a human being can last only a matter of days without fresh drinking water. Our need for water is more immediate than our need for food, because we can live for thirty days or more without eating. Only air is more critical to short term survival than water.
Today we are celebrating nine years of delivering Chiropractic News online. These past few days I was taking a look at our news image archives and I saw the many faces of chiropractors that have had a part in making planet chiropractic a successful destination on the Internet. Not that many web sites can tout nine years of continuous original content development, and there’s no way planet chiropractic would’ve done this without the support received by thousands of chiropractors, chiropractic students, and advocates of chiropracticly based lifestyles. We’d like to thank everyone who has ever submitted an article (especially those that have written a significant amount of content), forwarded chiropractic news stories, and taken an active role helping us become the success we are today. The Film Documentary by Michael Moore entitled “Sicko” has been pirated online and appeared this past weekend on Video Sharing Websites, on BitTorrent, and in UseNet groups.
My other chiropractor used to adjust me differently. “Are you going to do that thing my old chiropractor used to do?” “Wow, that was really different than my last chiropractic adjustment.” Ever wonder why chiropractors use different techniques? There are nearly as many ways to deliver a chiropractic adjustment as there are chiropractors. How is it possible that adjustments can be so different and still get good results?

I have been a chiropractor for over 15 years. When I went to Chiropractic College, there was an incredible complexity taught. At the time, it appeared that the goal of our college was to make us as much as possible like medical doctors. The implied thought was that there was something sacred or ultra important about the medical profession. In fact at that time, there was a huge push throughout the chiropractic profession to make us fit into the mainstream health care system of the time.

When it comes to the press, the near 5000 parents suggesting vaccines were the cause of their child’s autism and who are seeking compensation from a federal vaccine fund, have a better chance of getting Paris Hilton elected as president in 2008 than they do getting their stories told without bias in the news.
Nearly 5,000 families of autistic children have filed claims for compensation from a federal vaccine injury fund, with many parents believing a mercury compound (thimerosal) found in vaccines is at least partly responsible for their childrens autism. Cases began being heard today in US court.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) is on a continued growth spurt and may soon become the largest organization representing chiropractors worldwide. While membership numbers in some US based national chiropractic associations have been dipping downward, membership in the ICPA has been continuing to grow, putting the Pennsylvania based international organization on track to become the largest professional organization to represent chiropractors and chiropractic students worldwide.

Dr. Michael Moore is a 1980s graduate of Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa. Since that time, he has been serving not only his community with chiropractic care, he has educated hundreds of other chiropractors, and has participated in numerous humanitarian mission trips to other countries, bringing the wonders of chiropractic to those that would not have access to it otherwise.
