The 2009 Los Angeles Marathon is scheduled for Memorial Day Monday, which is one week from today. Many local runners are hoping June gloom arrives a little bit early, bringing with it a marine layer and cooler temperatures throughout the Southland. Having been a runner in Los Angeles for the past decade, we’re reaching that time of year where running in the afternoon is a bit more taxing on the body, than it’s been in the months since October. With a marathon start time of around 7:20 AM, it’s going to be a race to the finish line, hopefully before the sun brings the heat upon Los Angeles.

The world wackiest road race took place today in San Francisco, with Kenya’s 22-year-old Sammy Kitwara, crushing an existing record for the San Francisco Bay to Breakers 12K race. Kitwara ran the 12 kilometer distance in a time of 33:31 with an average running pace of 4:30, beating all previous records in the 98-year-old San Francisco foot race. ING did a terrific job with this year’s 2009 Bay to Breakers event, and lots of photos have already appeared online, thanks to Twitter and photo sharing sites like Flickr.

It’s marathon weekend in Green Bay, and with a record number of runners already signed up for race day, the Green Bay Marathon 2009 is looking like a spectacular running event. Besides the 26.2 mile marathon, there is a half marathon, as well as a 5K event. Registration for the half marathon is officially closed, with an estimated 4000 participants registered. It’s the 10th annual Cellcom Green Bay Marathon, which begins and ends at the famous Lambeau Field.

Will it be the Kentucky Derby upset Mine That Bird, filly Rachel Alexandra, or another thoroughbred in the 13 horse lineup, to win the 2009 Preakness Stakes? I took some time this morning to research many of the questions being asked regarding today’s second jewel in the Triple Crown of horse racing, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico racetrack in Baltimore Maryland.

In its 98th year, the ING Bay to Breakers 12K, is one of the world’s largest and oldest foot races. The 2009 San Francisco Bay to Breakers race takes place this Sunday, May 17. The Bay to Breakers name reflects the traditional course which takes tens of thousands of participants from the northeast end of downtown San Francisco to Ocean Beach, or the West End of the city. The 7.46 mile race features world-class athletes as well as colorful costumed runners and lots of fun loving people out for a great day of running and walking through San Francisco.

The Preakness Stakes takes place this Saturday at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. Inaugurated in 1873, the Preakness is held on the third Saturday of May each year. As a kid I was fortunate to spend many Sundays at Belmont Race Track in New York, thanks to parents and relatives deeply interested in thoroughbred horse racing. This chiropractor remembers Woody Woodpecker cartoons playing on the TV screens in the early 1970s, probably something that was done to keep kids entertained while parents placed their bets. We never made the trip to Baltimore for the Preakness, but there were a few to the Kentucky Derby throughout the 1970s. This years stunning Kentucky Derby win by Mine That Bird will likely increase television viewership for the 2009 Preakness, as people from around the world tune in to see The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans.

What if the swine flu virus, which has been spreading across the globe, was not something that occurred as a result of nature, but was man made in a laboratory? Sound like a crazy chiropractic conspiracy theory? Well, it’s a question and Australian scientist behind the development of Tamiflu is asking. Respected scientist, Adrian Gibbs, claims the new swine flu H1N1 virus may possibly have been accidentally created in a laboratory, by scientists using eggs to grow viruses and make new vaccines.

Chiropractors have one more thing to look out for when it comes to being pitched on chiropractic marketing online. Chronic low back pain is a plague on America, and when it comes to its treatment, there is a long laundry list of therapies and approaches people rely on. A recent study published in the May issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine suggests that acupuncture is an effective treatment for chronic low back pain. However, the study noted an unusual finding, that penetration of the skin with needles was not required, in order for people to report improvement. Turns out acupuncture can be added to the long list of uses for the common toothpick.

When it comes to sending media releases online, what goes for other industries also goes for the industry of chiropractic. Those that send out news releases and media information, can expect to see an increase in website related traffic. News releases can be seen on Planet Chiropractic several times a week, and sources range from chiropractic schools to chiropractic organizations and nonprofit groups. News releases are sometimes submitted by chiropractors practicing the field, but there is room for how-to learning, by studying what’s being approved when it comes to chiropractic news releases.

As always, any chiropractor selling products online is advised to watch out for potential scams and fraud when posting classified ads. A Nigerian Scammer Loaded Martins contacted someone earlier this week, hoping to get them to wire money overseas. It’s a good practice to take the extra steps in getting to know who you’re dealing with, before sharing any personal or specific information when buying or selling via chiropractic classifieds online. A simple reply to e-mails asking somebody what chiropractic college they attended, is a good way to start.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 67% of American workers don’t like their jobs. People start working when they are 16 to 18 and don’t stop until they are 65 or older. Careers chosen at 18 may not be appropriate when they turn 50. Changing careers is a well-established fact of employment. Vincent Van Gogh, the impressionist painter, was a schoolmaster, student priest missionary and art dealer before he became a painter. The days of retiring to Florida are long gone. Are you grabbing your face mask, stocking up on food and Tamiflu, locking your doors and keeping your TV tuned to the news to find out just how bad the “swine flu pandemic” really is going to get? While Americans are being scared to death, few are noticing how much of their tax money politicians are giving to drug companies and government health officials to grease the skids to create more experimental flu vaccines and drugs and more effective ways to quarantine or force their mass use whenever a “public health emergency” is declared in the future.

After announcing that Sherman College has demonstrated “a true commitment to the spirit of peer review,” the special committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) shared its findings with Sherman President Dr. Jon Schwartzbauer and his administrative team at the conclusion of the SACS site team visit on April 30.

Worldwide news regarding swine flu doesn’t appear to be dying down much in the upcoming week. While deaths have been reported in the state of Mexico, increasing numbers of people dying from swine flu infection have not been yet reported in other parts of the world. Vice president Joe Biden commented on television last week that he would urge his family to stay off commercial airliners, subways, and crowded spaces, to avoid coming in contact with those infected with swine flu. The travel industry was outraged by the remarks, and the White House has apparently apologized for his comments (although his suggestion sounded like basic common sense advice offered by someone who cares about their family). Another person in Washington last week had comments regarding the Swine Flu.

May 3, 2009 was a big Sunday for marathons all across the United States. The 2009 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, the 2009 Pittsburgh Marathon, the Eugene Marathon in Oregon, the 2009 Lincoln Marathon in a Nebraska, and the 2009 Orange County Marathon in Newport Beach Southern California, were all run on this Sunday.

Busted balls can be hazardous to your health. News is being reported from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that a number of fitness balls are being recalled due to a fall hazard. The fitness balls, which were manufactured in China, have been Recalled by EB Brands, manufacturer for a number of fitness ball products.

Apparently in the 1970s there was a swine flu media campaign intended to convince people of all ages to get flu shots. Two commercials, which are available for viewing online, demonstrate how flu shots were marketed to the general public in 1976. The announcer in the commercial warns that a swine flu epidemic may be coming, and it could make you very sick.

Far too many people (including chiropractors) are not aware of historical events that took place during the 1917 – 1918 Spanish Flu years, which involved chiropractors caring for thousands that suffered influenza infection during those times. With such a firestorm of media coverage and fear surrounding the Swine Flu Pandemic, it would be irresponsible not to attempt seeking knowledge regarding influenza events of the past.

Where is medical science today on wiping out all forms of the flu? The news is volcanic this week with Swine Flu pandemic outbreak stories, not just in the United States, but worldwide. Wearing surgical masks, using hand sanitizer, and frequent washing of hands in hot soapy water, is an activity that has increased amongst many in the affected populations this past week. News reports of antiviral agents, scientific flu medications, and the creation of new flu vaccines that will stop the swine flu strain, have been prevalent in the discussion. This isn’t the first time flu vaccine science has made the news, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Everyone is talking about Swine Flu. There’s no doubt the topic will come up in a chiropractic setting, and chiropractors are likely going to offer advice more on the side of wellness and prevention versus use of antiviral agents, vaccines, and taking of medications. One California Chiropractic office had a Swine Flu Handout prepared for Monday morning distribution. We’ve included a copy of the text here, for those wanting to educated with similar handouts.

Graduates of Life Chiropractic College West are among the chiropractors volunteering to provide chiropractic care to earthquake relief workers in L’Aquila, Italy. The medieval city in central Italy was severely damaged by a quake that struck on April 6, killing scores.

It’s Marathon Saturday in Music City. This morning, seven thousand five hundred marathon runners, and twenty five thousand half marathon runners, take to the streets of Nashville, on a course that runs through downtown Nashville, with a finish line at LP Field. A hundred thousand cheering fans line the streets as 2009 Country Music Marathon participants pass by, making their way through Nashville, with 50 musical bands playing on 27 entertainment stages along the way. Hundreds of high school cheerleaders motivate marathon participants to the finish line, and a post race country music concert follows Saturday night.

Universal Sports will be broadcasting the 2009 London Marathon live this Sunday beginning at 9am Eastern Time (6am on the West Coast). Live coverage of the 26.2 mile long distance running event will be on TV and live online as well. Men’s and women’s marathon gold medalists from the Beijing Olympic Games headline the field as Universal Sports presents live online and same-day television coverage of the 2009 Flora London Marathon, part of the World Marathon Majors series.

Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) announced that they are shutting down GeoCities, a service that provided people with a free web site, along with all the tools needed to build that site. Yahoo had acquired GeoCities, for more than $4 billion 10 years ago, during the 1999 gold rush of the dot com boom.
