2009 Preakness Stakes on May 16

The Preakness Stakes takes place this Saturday at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, Maryland. Inaugurated in 1873, the Preakness is held on the third Saturday of May each year. As a kid I was fortunate to spend many Sundays at Belmont Race Track in New York, thanks to parents and relatives deeply interested in thoroughbred horse racing. This chiropractor remembers Woody Woodpecker cartoons playing on the TV screens in the early 1970s, probably something that was done to keep kids entertained while parents placed their bets. We never made the trip to Baltimore for the Preakness, but there were a few to the Kentucky Derby throughout the 1970s. This years stunning Kentucky Derby win by Mine That Bird will likely increase television viewership for the 2009 Preakness, as people from around the world tune in to see The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans.

The Preakness is the second leg of America’s Triple Crown series, and it almost always attracts the winner of that years Kentucky Derby. This years Kentucky Derby winner was 50 to 1 long shot Mine That Bird, ridden by 42-year-old jockey Calvin Borel. At this years 2009 Preakness Stakes Borel will be riding filly Rachel Alexandra, while jockey Mike Smith, 1993 Preakness winner aboard Prairie Bayou, will ride Mine That Bird.

The 2008 Preakness winner was Big Brown, who was ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux. The horse finished a distance of 1.1875 miles in a time of 1:54.80. Big Brown also won the 2008 Kentucky Derby but was upset in the 2008 race at Belmont. The 2008 winner of the Belmont Stakes was 38-1 underdog Da’ Tara, ridden by jockey Alan Garcia.

Watch video from the 2009 Kentucky Derby. If by some chance you missed the televised 2009 Kentucky Derby on NBC, be sure to check out the video footage from the Saturday race. What the announcer referred to as an impossible result, Mine That Bird, staged a monumental upset at 50 to 1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby, the second-biggest upset in Derby history.

If you haven’t done so already, watch the above video to see footage from the 2009 Kentucky Derby. The race footage is only about 2 1/2 minutes long, but the emotion of jockey Calvin Borel, makes watching the near eight minutes that follow well worth it.

I’m searching for a source to watch the Preakness live online, and if I locate that before Saturday afternoon, I’ll be updating this post with further information. No doubt Preakness video will be available online a short time after the race. This years 2009 Preakness Stakes will be televised on NBC and ESPN. The 134th Preakness Stakes start time (also referred to as post time) is at 4:30 PM Eastern standard Time.

And in case you’ve been wondering, yes there is equine chiropractic for horses and thoroughbreds, and there are continuing education chiropractic courses for both doctors of chiropractic and those in the veterinary field.

The Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, runs on Saturday, June 6, 2009.
