Lance Armstrong & Jeff Spencer Victorious

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Sunday, July 29th, 2001 – Lance Armstrong has won his third straight Tour de France title becoming the only American to ever do so.

MSNBC reported, “Armstrong’s ride to victory was smooth from start to finish” and some said that Lance was “untouchable.” Bonnie DeSimone of the Chicago Tribune called the high-altitude stages “backbreaking.” Good thing for the non-backbreaking touch of chiropractor, Jeff Spencer.

For the past three years, Dr. Jeff Spencer has provided on-site chiropractic care and support, helping Lance Armstrong win the 1999, 2000, and 2001 Tour de France races.

Dr. Jeff Spencer is no stranger to the sport. He is former champion cyclist who competed on the 1972 United States Olympic Team as a sprint cyclist and he serves as chiropractor for the United States Postal Service Professional Cycling Team.

Dr. Jeff Spencer
“My job with Lance and the team is to optimize the neuromusculoskeletal component of their training and, in the event of a crash, minimize down time and get them back in the race as quickly as possible. I adjust them as needed and guide them in choices of diet and supplements, which helps reduce the likelihood of injury.”

Dr. Jeff graduated summa cum laude from the University of Southern California with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Sports Science and later graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College, Los Angeles where he received the top clinician of the year award.

Lance believes it is healthy to always have challenge in your life. He told a reporter, “There’s no such thing as a free ride. I wake up every morning thinking that it’s a fresh day, there are no do-overs, and I’ve got to continue to try and be the best and try and stay healthy and try and be honest.” Lance Armstrong is now one of five men to have prevailed in three consecutive Tours.

During the tour, Jeff had the opportunity to adjust his childhood hero, Belgium’s Eddy Merckx, who has won a total of five Tour events. Dr. Jeff stated that Eddy Merckx is the greatest rider in the history of cycling, and the opportunity to poke and pound on him was extraordinary, but extraordinary events are daily occurrences at the Tour de France.

And chiropractic care for Lance?
According to Dr. Jeff, during their time together they never talk about cycling. “We deal with the physical issues associated with it, but not about it. We talk about everything else,” including philosophy.

“It’s truly a honor to watch a person create history before your eyes. It is even cooler to see knowing that I spend one-on-one time with him every day pounding, yanking, poking and prodding on him!” – Dr. Jeff

Congratulations to Lance Armstrong and the entire USPS Team and Bravo to Dr. Jeff Spencer, a wonderful human being.

Our Ultimate Objective In Chiropractic

By Stew Bittman, D.C.

What is our ultimate objective in chiropractic? I cringe at the multitudinous answers I would inevitably get, though I completely understand why I would get so many. Indeed, my own answer to that question would have been different in nearly every one of the fifteen years I have been a chiropractor. In the last few years my answer would always have centered on Spirit, Innate. Releasing It, serving It, helping to reconnect folks to It, etc…

Today I ponder the real significance of that idea. Why is that so important? So people can feel better? So they can heal? So they can perform better? So they can reach their individual potential? So they can become whole? These are all wonderful things, vitally important things. Things that no one can influence more naturally, more easily, and more lovingly than we can. Yet I feel that we have something even greater with which to serve the world.

Lately, as I am adjusting someone, my vision is of that person becoming more of an instrument of God’s will. I see him or her striding nearer to their divine plan. I feel his or her Innate rising up, expanding, filling the room, connecting with mine, and taking control of not only their physiology but also their life. I sense that person is a giant step closer to the greatness and the unlimited power within them, and I know that person is now more loving, more connected to All, and more able to serve everyone and everything else with their gift.

I am certain that what the world needs now (besides love, sweet love) is for every being in it to become great. To step fully into their power. To know their gifts. To sing their song. To serve without strings. To become clean, hollow bones. Nothing is more important at this point in our existence than for everyone to be doing what they were created to do, in service to everyone else. And chiropractic is an incredibly simple and beautiful vehicle to help facilitate that in others, which makes it indispensable.

With this objective in mind, our responsibilities become a tad larger. We must become great ourselves. We must surrender completely to our own Innates. We must do the work to remain at a higher level of awareness than the folks for which we have been chosen to be stewards. We must be the pioneers on the road to complete faith, and lead our folks by example. My, it is so much easier to play doctor. So much easier to spout educated illusions. So much easier to rely on intellect. So much easier to treat symptoms.

I chuckle at the oft-repeated idea amongst our more “scientific” brethren that principled chiropractors are taking the easy way out and avoiding responsibility. On the contrary, what is easy is following the well-grooved medical paradigm; the path for which we have been programmed and for which the world still offers so much positive feedback. What is easy is giving people what, in their unconsciousness, they have been trained to want. What is difficult is giving them what our hearts tell us they need.

Do we continue to let the world, crazy and filled with suffering as we often say it is, to dictate our actions and our missions? Or do we become part of the solution?

If you resonate with the idea that we can change the world, take heart. If you have ever witnessed someone’s heart opened, someone’s dream fulfilled, someone’s life changed as a result of a chiropractic adjustment, hold on to that beautiful memory. And use it to motivate yourself to become great. Gandhi reminded us that we need to BE the change we wish to see in the world. So let us be love, let us be peace, let us be harmony, let us be ease, let us be chiropractic. Let us become so finely tuned that our mere presence will uplift, empower, and heal. Let us become so great and so powerful that the rest of the profession will have a new well-grooved path to follow. Let us step out of the shadows and project the light of truth into every blessed square inch of this universe. And when someone asks us what we do, let us tell him or her that we change the world in every moment, by helping to manifest God’s will. Who knows, maybe someday there will even be an insurance code for that.

Telling The Congregation

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

For many, spending Sunday in church is not at all out of the ordinary. But to have Planet Chiropractic news cameras in New York City’s Times Square Church while a congregation of 3000 listens to a talk about chiropractic, that’s another story.

Sunday July 15th, 2001 – It was a full house for the Sunday afternoon service at the Times Square Church. The church is located in the heart of New York City and you could feel the love emanating out onto the street. Dr. Dean Sottile, chiropractor in Clifton, New Jersey was to be baptized on this day.

Dr. Dean Sottile(Photo: Dean Sottile, D.C. in Central Park) I arrived early along with Dean so that I could capture the experience on camera. We headed backstage toward the area that Dean would change into his baptismal garb and a gentleman coordinating the group of individuals to be baptized asked who I was. Dr. Dean simply stated, “he’s the photographer.” There were big smiles and the gentleman stated that this was the first time he had seen a professional photographer at such an event. (not that I am a professional but others seem to think so)

This isn’t just an article about the baptism of Dr. Dean Sottile, (it was very wet) this is an article about the opportunity to share the message of chiropractic. While we were backstage Dean was asked if he would witness before the congregation and of course he said yes. Although we did not speak about it I knew that there would be some preaching of the gospel of chiropractic coming from the platform and I had to head back out front to capture some photos.

Before an audience of 3000, Dean Sottile, Chiropractor, (and son of a chiropractor) told his story. He spoke of his journey, of the church, and of chiropractic. Dean let everyone know that the drugs their bodies need are already inside of them and that healing comes from the inside out.

Dr. Dean Sottile(Photo: Dean Sottile, D.C. on the super big screen) The room burst into “hallelujahs”, “amens”, and shouts of “praise Jesus.” There were these huge monitors like in a sports arena (this is no ordinary church) and Dean appeared larger then life. (although, nothing is bigger then life) Dean talked about his office, Gods Love Chiropractic, and told of the miracles that occur there. He invited everyone to come and visit.

As thousands left the church later that evening, Dean visualized them all coming in for care and being adjusted. Many folks commented on how inspirational Deans message was and some kind words were spoken from those being cared for by their chiropractors. Know you are loved.

More Advertising – More Drugs

An article on MSNBC suggests that Americans are taking more prescription drugs thanks in part to massive advertising introduced by the drug industry. According to the article, Americans who visited a medical doctors office in 1999 were far more likely to receive more than one drug then Americans were back in 1985.

Increased use was up amongst nearly all prescription medications, with the exception of antibiotics which have received so much attention during the past few years as a result of massive over prescribing and increased antibiotic resistance.

Some researchers believe that the power of advertising has led to the use of more drugs in today’s society. The promotion of drugs directly to the public has most definitely increased and according to one doctor, “the ones that are heavily marketed are, in fact, heavily prescribed.”

A medical doctor suggested that people are taking more medications today because they have more chronic conditions and that modern medical science has made huge amounts of progress.

A spokesman for pharmaceutical manufacturers suggested that the rise prescription drug use is good news because science now has more medicines to treat more diseases.

Questions
Would huge advances in health care result in consumers taking more medications for chronic conditions or less medications because they no longer have those conditions?

If more medicines are being prescribed, should there be more diseases?
What happened after years of increased antibiotic use?

Health Care Concerned with the Well-Being of Human Kind

By Dr. James W. Gregg

Chiropractic: Health Care Concerned with the Well-Being of Human Kind, Mind, Body and Spirit
July 24, 2001

“Chiropractic, in its scientific simplicity, is the link between the internal wisdom of life and the body.” This quote from Dr. Sid Williams, president of LIFE University in Georgia, couldn’t be more true. Chiropractic is based on the absolute science that every function in the human body is directed and coordinated by the nervous system. It is through this science that we know without a doubt that the body is a self healing and self regulating organism that knows how to heal itself from inside the same way it knew how to grow from 2 cells into organs, glands, muscles, joints, eyes, ears and eventually into you.

The Power that made the body heals the body. The body heals itself through the communication of the nervous system to the tissues in your body and guiding the correcting of any problems with the building of new tissue. It will do this as long as there is no interference in the nerve flow to the tissues in question. The chiropractor’s primary goal is to help the body tap into this amazing, internal healing wisdom by removing interferences to this nervous system called “subluxations”, which are changes in the dynamics of the bones of the spine, choking, stretching or irritating the delicate nerve tissues.

The results of subluxations cause sickness and symptoms in the tissues where these nerves go. For some the symptom is headaches, in others it is back pain, others Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Asthma. In children, subluxations may cause a block in the draining of the ear and cause ear infections. If a Subluxation is left uncorrected it can affect the structure and function of the joints of the spine, and thus lead to Scoliosis, or start the cycle of Spinal Arthritis.

Subluxations like viruses, can happen at anytime. They can be caused by repetitive strain injury, sports injuries, prolonged sitting at a desk or computer or long drives and more. Stress and the physical tension it creates can subluxate the spine. Roger Sperry won the Nobel Prize for showing that 90% of our brain energy is spent dealing with the forces of gravity. The way we run, walk, sit and sleep are always affected by gravity, and the spine bears the most of this and can become subluxated if it has a stress put on it.

Many subluxations however are caused in childhood and show up as problems later in life. Learning to walk and falling, bumping the spine can cause subluxations, and many times the Birth Trauma, of the delivery pulling on the neck or forceps can cause lifetime spinal problems. Chiropractors are trained to detect and correct subluxations with specific Chiropractic adjustments. The adjustment is a specific low force intended to re-align the vertebrae, thus removing the nerve interference and restoring proper function of the spine. It is gentle, and is completely drug free. Three years of university education, and an additional four years of intense training in an accredited chiropractic college is what a chiropractor achieves to become a doctor of chiropractic.

Chiropractic is for all ages and a healthy spine and nervous system is a priority today, for healthier tomorrows. Recent published reports demonstrate the harmful effect of drugs used by the traditional medical approach to deal with symptoms. Forbes Magazine in January 1998 reported that “Tylenol Kills More people per year than Cocaine!” The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that “180,000 die each year from drug or doctor induced injury, the equivalent of 3 jumbo jet crashes every 2 days!” (Dec. 1994). Masking problems with dangerous drugs can be harmful to your health, and does nothing to enhance your quality of life.

Chiropractic is clearly an effective and safe, drug-free approach to better health. When we are feeling ill our mind body says “I can’t”, and our happiness, vitality, enjoyment of life and people, work and play, and relationships all suffer. When we are healthy, we attract new opportunities and possibilities. We have energy to play, to work, to give or to share with others. Illness costs our lives in so many ways. Healing with Chiropractic pays in so many ways by optimizing your health and quality of life.

At Gregg Family Chiropractic we believe in building a relationship with our patients, and becoming a ‘Health Coach’ , educating our patients about health and wellness, mind, body and spirit. Helping our patients live pain free, healthy lives by maximizing health with a healthy spine and nervous system is our mission. Visit your local chiropractor, or come see us. We would like to help you on the journey to better health, vitality and quality of life.

Hazardous Virus Alert

I hate to bother everyone with this message but last week a new computer virus went into circulation that may potentially be very damaging to you. The virus, which is technically a worm, releases confidential info. It will export a random document from your hard drive by appending it to the body of the worm. (virus)

Basically, it forwards your microsoft word documents to others without your knowledge. How serious is this? In the past 72 hours I have received nearly 120 documents from various chiropractors. (unintentionally) Those documents included…

Employee Manuals
Articles on carpal tunnel syndrome, AC joints, etc…
Info on patients in your offices
Office and procedural manuals
Dr & Attorney information
Several technique articles
Miscellaneous other personal documents

I urge all of you to update your virus software (I use Norton Antivirus) immediately. If you do not have virus software installed, do so immediately. This is not a plug for any particular company, I’d just hate to see your personal info go into the wrong hands.

The virus is NOT specific to chiropractors, everyone should check to see that their computers are secure.

For more information, go to: www.symantec.com and click on “Security Updates – W32.Sircam.Worm”

Virus Name: W32.Sircam.Worm @ mm It was released on July 17, 2001
Some article links are below.

Oddly enough, I began prayer and meditation last week for more chiropractors to begin submitting articles to Planet Chiropractic. This is not how I intended to get those articles. (yes Marco, I was being specific in my prayers) I’d like principled chiropractors, students, and staff to consider sharing their experiences with others. A few sentences about your practice, love for what you do, experiences, would be welcomed.

If you need any assistance or have any questions about the virus, feel free to email me. All documents I have received have been deleted to protect your privacy and my computers.

All my best,
Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Mercury and Vaccines

From the Boston Globe comes an article titled, “Fears Raised Over Preservative in Vaccines.” According to the article, a mother, (a registered nurse) thought she was doing the right thing when she took her son to be vaccinated for various childhood diseases. Within a short time after being vaccinated her son lost his speech and the ability to make eye contact.

The child was later diagnosed with a form of autism. It was the same form of autism in which a Food and Drug Administration study had warned that the mercury preservative, thimerosal, used in some vaccines, may be exposing children to levels of mercury higher than those recommended under federal guidelines.

According to the article, when referred to the Environmental Protection Agencies maximum daily dosage, the boy had 125 times the allowable exposure of mercury in a single day via the vaccinations he received.

Parents, scientists, and concerned others have been urging the U.S. to oppose the use of any mercury compound as a preservative and vaccines. (perform a keyword search for “mercury” or “thimerosal” to find related articles)

According to the article, thimerosal has been used in vaccines and other medical products since the 1930s. (but vaccines were not given with such frequency as today) And although mercury has long been known to be a neurotoxin, both vaccine makers and some federal officials have argued that it is harmless in the doses found in vaccines.

Many parents, along with some doctors and scientists, believe differently. More and more evidence is pointing to a link between vaccination and autism as well as other neurological disorders.

Besides vaccines, other products also contain the mercury compound. Products that contain thimerosal include tetanus shots, children’s nasal drops & ear drops.

At a recent hearing attended by federal officials, scientists, and parents, there was much discussion surrounding neurological disorders. According to the article, most of the doctors and scientists who spoke at the hearing presented evidence that showed at least a correlation between vaccines containing mercury and the incidence of neurological disease.

CWOB in Costa Rica

U.S. chiropractors returned home from Costa Rica last week after serving participants in the countries Costa Rican National Youth Games. The group, known as “Chiropractors Without Borders” is a part of the Life Foundation and their trip was sponsored by Delta Airlines and Life University’s Sports Chiropractic Department.

Dr. Ed Cordero of Boynton Beach, Florida adjusts a police officer in Costa Rica.Among the U.S. volunteers who participated in the project were: Drs. Ed Cordero, Boynton Beach, FL; Fred Fritsch, Woodstock, GA; Fred Gerretzen, Tucson, AZ; Mitch Holsten, Newark, NJ; Bruce Salzinger, Atlanta, GA; and Jon Stucky, Hyrum, Utah.

Dr. Ed Cordero stated that the television coverage was fantastic as the week long event was broadcast daily on TV. Dr. Ed is no stranger to Costa Rican T.V., he was interviewed for a 30 minute talk show back in May of 2000 during a CREW chiropractic mission to Costa Rica.

Dr. Fred Gerretzen tells it like this…
“Six chiropractors met at the airport in Atlanta and embarked on what would turn out to be the hardest working, but most rewarding, trip of my life. Our mission was to provide chiropractic care to the athletes competing in The Costa Rican National Youth Games. Athletes under twenty years of age competed for six days in sports ranging from track and field, boxing, triathlon, tennis, soccer, to basketball, and more. We also took care of the spectators and general public while we were down there. For the majority of these people it was their first experience with chiropractic care. I would have to guess that we adjusted between five and six thousand people. We often had lines around the tents of people waiting to get checked. It was incredible!”

Chiropractors Without Borders (CWOB) is a division of Life International and is the creation of Dr. Sid E. Williams. CWOB reflects his vision to provide chiropractic and basic health care in areas where chiropractic and other basic health care may not be available. Create a Condition, Create a Market

This week’s international Herald Tribune features an article titled, “Selling an Illness Helps Pharmaceutical Giant Peddle Its Pill.” The author speaks of a little-known malady called Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), a condition many of us have become familiar with during the past two years as a result of marketing efforts which included advertising on television.

According to the article, psychiatrists and patient advocates appeared on TV and in print to explain that the condition (SAD) was extremely widespread but was easily treatable. Paxil also markets their drug for a condition called “Generalized Anxiety Disorder” (GAD).

What the author found interesting was that all the attention surrounding this condition was not spurred on by medical developments, rather it was part of a coordinated campaign by a New York public relations agency. According to the article, about 96 percent of the stories delivered the message, “Paxil is the first and only FDA approved medication for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.” Was the ad agency hired by a pharmaceutical giant to push the use of drugs? Of course, but is the condition real?

You are the maker of this drug and you are the only manufacturer who has the drug to treat this so-called disorder, what kind of position does that put you in?

Sell The Illness, Supply The Market
Paxil is not alone. It was not long ago that we began seeing commercials for premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD. The drug in this case was Sarafem, which according to WebMD, is a “repackaged, relabeled version of the antidepressant fluoxetine hydrochloride — better known to millions by the brand name Prozac.”

Ritalin is another example. There are those who question whether ADD/ADHD is a condition created by drug manufacturers in order to sell more product. In fact, the state of California and state of New Jersey filed class action suits against the makers of ritalin and the American Psychiatric Association last year, accusing the two of conspiring to create the disease attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in order to sell more of the drug.

Remember that nearly 20 million prescriptions for ritalin, and other psychotropic stimulants were written last year in the United States – that is a 35 percent increase since 1996. Most of the prescriptions, according to a health care information company, were written for boys under the age of 12.

Science Without Philosophy

By Kevin Marc Herson

“Science without philosophy has no conscience” – Albert Einstein

Philosophy is the core distinction of the Chiropractic profession, separating it from all other professions. An understanding of such is an essential component for the success of future Chiropractors, and the future of Chiropractic.

Far too many students lack an understanding of the fundamental principles of Chiropractic, hence they have no knowledge of why they do, what they do. Often times this leads to disappointment, since they fail to obtain the results misconstrued to them through the course of their “Chiropractic education.” Such in part is illustrated by the statistically high rate of failure amongst Chiropractic graduates when entering practice. These graduates begin to knock on the door of failure and eventually knock that door down, once they have done such, they continue on and knock down Chiropractic. “Chiropractic doesn’t work” they cry, and cry it out loud to everyone they encounter. They are too blind to see that it is not Chiropractic that has failed, but instead they the Chiropractor whom has failed.

Chiropractic always works; the Chiropractor however, does not always work. Why is it such that the Chiropractor does not always work, simply because he or she has no understanding of why they do, what they do. With this letter, on behalf of Chiropractic, I ask for your support. Please view the flyer (Chiropractic Schooling With Reggie), open your heart, and give to the gift of Chiropractic that has so many times, given to you.
