A festive celebration marked the official grand opening of the Standard Process Student Activity Center located on Parker College of Chiropractic’s campus. Standard Process Inc.®, a nutritional food supplement manufacturer, bestowed a generous one million dollar donation to Parker College to help advance the college’s academic potential and to further the education of future doctors of chiropractic. Part of the donation was used to support renovations and the naming of a new state-of-the-art student activity center which is stocked with the latest workout and weight training equipment that will be used by students, faculty, and staff.

On November 20, 2009 Doctor of Chiropractic, William C. Eriksen, will be roaring off into the trek across the Baja peninsula. This will mark the beginning of the 42nd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic is now known as Sherman College of Chiropractic. The college’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to authorize the college’s name change on October 17, 2009, during its fall meeting.

Following what might be the most expansive search for a chiropractic college leader in the history of the profession, the Palmer College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the unanimous selection of Dennis Marchiori, D.C., Ph.D., D.A.C.B.R., as chancellor of Palmer College. His appointment will take effect December 15, 2009.

Chiropractic history was made on Sunday, October 11th on the streets of Chicago when all runners on Team NPCO for Chiropractic successfully crossed the finish line at the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in front of over one million cheering spectators. Waking up early and bearing the chilly 33 degree weather, runners from various parts of the country ran 26.2 miles on behalf of Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization (NPCO).

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), has awarded a supplemental grant to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) for its clinical study on the relationship between back pain and possible abnormal function of the supportive muscles in the back. The PCCR is located on the campus of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.

California Chiropractic Association (CCA) member and non member chiropractors gathered on Wednesday, October 21st, for a combined Los Angeles Metro and Santa Monica District CCA meeting/presentation. The event, which featured chiropractic attorney Shawn Steel, was held at the world famous International Sport Science Institute, a facility owned by long time chiropractor, Dr. Leroy Perry.

The Parker Alumni Association recognized alumni who have made a tremendous difference in the chiropractic profession during the Parker Annual Homecoming and Class Reunion in Dallas, Texas.

Parker Seminars partnered with several of the chiropractic industry leaders to present Parker College of Chiropractic students with 10 scholarships totaling 37,250 dollars during the Dallas Parker Seminar. Scholarship recipients were chosen by the Parker College of Chiropractic scholarship committee. Students who applied for the scholarships were required to write an essay about what they have learned from speakers during Parker Seminars and Parker College assemblies.

Chiropractic waiting rooms are being transformed into patient education rooms thanks to a new service launched by Now You Know (NYK). The chiropractic website and Internet educational service, Now You Know, has created an in office chiropractic news service that streams information from online to television screens in chiropractic reception areas.

From what I’ve gathered by researching chiropractic publications, journals, historical archives and other sources from around the golden state, Chiropractic as a profession in the state of California, experienced a significant amount of activity in the 1940s, especially in Los Angeles. In 1943, the year Warner Bros. won Best Picture Academy Award for the film Casablanca, chiropractors in the state of California got to be part of a federally insured state credit union.

Members of the Sports Council chapter of Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West Campus in San Jose, California, provided chiropractic sports care services to more than 800 competitors in Augusts 2009 National Senior Games, the largest multi-sport event in the world for seniors. Competitors in the two-week National Senior Games, held primarily at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., were able to enhance their performances through chiropractic care. There were more than 10,000 athletes participating in the August 1-15 competition.

Parker Seminars played host to more than 1,500 chiropractors, chiropractic assistants, massage therapists, and chiropractic students from all over the world. The seminar included Parker traditions along with many new events, speakers, and topics where attendees discovered, shared, and celebrated the profession.

The California Chiropractic Association is doing it again, FREE continuing education for CCA members in the state of California. The events take place in October and November and are going to be held in San Diego and the San Francisco Millbrae areas. Celebrating 81 years, the CCA held 12 hour California relicensing seminars this summer as well. Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center is excited to announce the annual “Have-A-Heart” campaign. This worldwide event will be held during Valentine’s week, February 8th – 14th, 2010. The purpose of this event is to increase the awareness of the healing power of chiropractic for the very sick children and to benefit “Oklahaven”.

History was made on Friday, September 18th in Davenport, Iowa – the birthplace and fountainhead of the Chiropractic profession. Doctors, chiropractic students, members of the Davenport City Council and the public were all on-hand to witness the first ever Chiropractic Awareness Day of Davenport, Iowa in the courtyard of the B.J. and Mabel Palmer Residence in Davenport, Iowa.

Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, president of Parker College of Chiropractic, along with other Texas health care leaders met with Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in Dallas, Texas where they examined the precise state of national health care reform discussions to determine how and where the chiropractic profession will be most effective in directing messages of concern and calls for inclusion in any reform program.

It’s a flu-for-all out there. War has been declared on the swine flu by governments around the world. The H1N1 swine flu virus is most notable for its tendency to be drearily lackluster, tame and below average as influenza goes, but on June 11, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) pushed the hyper-panic button for the swine flu anyway, triggering a global chain reaction of emergency medical preparations.

Parker College of Chiropractic held a dedication ceremony commemorating the naming of the Dr. Alfred Zimmer States Diversified Technique Lab on Parker’s campus in honor of the memory of Dr. States, a man who dedicated his life to chiropractic and Parker College of Chiropractic. Family and friends of Dr. States attended the dedication along with members of the community, students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded a three-year grant for approximately $1.3 million to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) for a study called Co-Management of Older Adults With Low Back Pain by Medical Doctors and Doctors of Chiropractic. Throughout this project, PCCR researchers will be collaborating with researchers at the Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency Program; the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa; the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine; the University of Iowa Center on Aging; and the College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pa.

On August 22-23 2009 Dr. Donald Epstein presented his newly revised Basic Care Intensive Seminar for Network Spinal Analysis for the first time ever in South America to a very receptive group of Chiropractors in Lima, Peru. Dr Epstein has completely revised his basic seminar in NSA to incorporate his recently published revolutionary model of health, Reorganizational Healing (ROH)1. In attendance were DCs from Brazil, Canada, South Africa, Switzerland and the United States.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you are likely one of the millions engaged in end of summer activities, such as getting kids prepared for going back to school, or preparing for your Labor Day final summer weekend. Having a chiropractic practice nearby the shores of the Pacific coastline in Los Angeles, I’ve seen a number of interesting things taking place inside and outside the office. It’s fire season here in Southern California, and while fires in the hills around Los Angeles never help the hot weather, the combination of heat and smoke does make for interesting sunsets. Hopefully, everyone will stay safe throughout the remainder of this season and California firefighters will do what they do best.

Even in the summer time, chiropractors are posting six or more advertisements per day, on the classified ad pages of the planet chiropractic website. Those numbers tend to increase when school activities resume in September and offices get back to business as usual for the autumn months. I’ve been paying attention to the various categories doctors and staff are posting ads to and I wanted to bring some attention to things that may be important for you to know when placing chiropractic classified advertisements online.

Questions about functions on the Planet Chiropractic website and concerns regarding the future of healthcare reimbursement in the United States, something I received via e-mail and I thought would be good to share on the site. A visitor writes… “I found your site via Google. First, To bring to your attention, there is a problem with your site when I click on “chiropractic schools”. When I click on it, a FATAL ERROR screen appears. I’ve attempted to click on that link on numerous computers and have gotten the same FATAL ERROR screen numerous times. So I’m thinking the problem may be on your end.”

Cuba! Can you believe that we just completed the first organized chiropractic mission trip to Cuba? I have searched and searched but I have never read about any other successful organized chiropractic mission trip to Cuba” said Peter H. Morgan, DC. A special Chiropractic mission team of 10 chiropractors, 3 chiropractic students, three chiropractic advocates and 1 chiropractic office manager brought chiropractic and humanitarian supplies to the people of Cuba. It was the first time an organized chiropractic mission trip actually made it to Cuba. Peter Morgan, DC the spiritual chiropractic leader and founder of Mission-Chiropractic and co-founder of Mission Life International of New York, N.Y. led the five-day mission to the communist nation at a time when new hope has emerged among the Cuban residents. In return, the group, made new friendships and brought home a better understanding of the plight of people on the island.

I’m not crazy about posts like this one, but at least a once a month reminding about buying and selling on the internet, seems worthwhile to me. I hope nobody falls for these scams and I realize that’s wishful thinking but we’ll keep making mention of it as long as the activity exists. Back in July of 2008 it was reported that the community was coordinating on identifying potential frauds, and that was followed up about a year ago today. Here is where we are at in August 2009.

Mission-Chiropractic is currently leading mission trips to Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ethiopia and Ghana. Mission-Chiropractic brings chiropractic to third world countries and to places where chiropractic has no presence. Mission Life International is a 501-C3 non-profit organization providing donations, vitamins, minerals, eyeglasses, shoes and many other life essentials and humanitarian type relief to the poor and suffering people of third world countries We are adding chiropractic to their efforts and need your help.

Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West Campus in San Jose will offer chiropractic and sports injury care through its Sports Council to more than 10,000 athletes from throughout the United States in August. The athletes will convene on the Stanford University campus and other California locations Aug. 1-15 to compete in over two dozen sports, including basketball, cycling, racquetball, swimming, track and field, and water polo.

There is a marathon taking place this weekend in the city of San Francisco, and as is the case for nearly all marathons in the United States, chiropractors will have played a role in preparing runners for optimal race performance.

Summertime is about getting outdoors and having fun with friends and family. There’s time to post chiropractic classifieds in the mornings and evenings but be sure to get outdoors and have some fun. A quick glance at listings for July show chiropractors are looking for new locations to practice in and others have posted lots of equipment for sale. For doctors of chiropractic living and practicing nearby each other, buying and selling stuff required to run an office could be a win-win. As always, be sure to know who you are doing business with when buying/selling online.

In the more than 20 years I’ve lived in Los Angeles no visiting friend or relative has reported disappointment in driving excursions I’ve taken them on in the Southland. Nearly all of those impromptu tours have involved destinations such as Hollywood, Malibu and Santa Monica, and areas in and adjacent to Beverly Hills. As I navigate the traffic clogged streets of LA, driving past a former residence of a Hollywood movie star usually satisfies their interests, and I’m happy to oblige. While there is a desire to see more of places like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, or maybe even Sunset Boulevard, I like to make a special stop in the rare occasion the person visiting has a background in chiropractic. What may appear like a noncelebrity stop on the edges of Koreatown is in actuality a historical chiropractic location.
