If you search Planet Chiropractic archives, every year in December, you’ll find I’ve written about the importance of attending chiropractic seminars in the month of January. While I find December is the best goalsetting month, January is a month of taking action. And to me, taking action doesn’t mean just chopping wood and carrying water in the office, it’s time to be with others and get the juices flowing.

The Board of Trustees of Parker University and Parker Seminars is pleased to announce the appointment of their new president, Brian J. McAulay, DC, PhD. This appointment comes after an intensive three month search conducted by a board-appointed presidential search committee of nine members, headed by Wright L. Lassiter, Jr., PhD, chair of the Board of Trustees.

January 2013 is time for chiropractic education and motivation in Las Vegas, Nevada. I’ve often said before that January is the perfect time to begin a year and chiropractic with a conference extravaganza. The Rio Hotel in Las Vegas at Parker Seminars is the perfect place to start. As always, this year features stellar speakers and educators, and one of the largest expo halls available to the chiropractic profession. See you in Las Vegas!

A study focusing on the cultural competency of chiropractic students was published in the Fall 2012 issue of The Journal of Chiropractic Education, a peer reviewed journal that is indexed in PubMed. The article titled “A Retrospective Analysis of the Cultural Competence of Chiropractic Students in a Public Health Course,” was written by Life West faculty members, Kim Khauv, D.C., M.P.H and Joel Alcantara, D.C.

The Chiropractic Health Care (CHC) Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) honored Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West Campus President William Meeker, D.C., M.P.H., for more than 20 years of “outstanding service and leadership” to the CHC by presenting him with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2012 APHA Annual Meeting & Exposition, held Oct. 27-31 in San Francisco, California.

Life University (LIFE) has partnered with Dr. Jason Deitch to create the Chiro Social Media Academy, a free, easy-to-follow instructional series that allows chiropractors to use social media, such as Facebook, to spread the chiropractic message in a way never before possible.

There is growing value and acceptance for conservative approaches to health care. Given chiropractic’s conservative, vitalistic and patient-centered approach, chiropractors are well positioned to assist patients in improving their spinal health and overall well-being. Unfortunately, too many people are not aware of what chiropractic can do to improve their health. At least some of the public’s poor understanding of chiropractic stems from the lack of a clear identity for the profession and description of what chiropractors do.

Sherman College of Chiropractic has named Edwin Cordero, D.C., as the college’s fifth president, effective January 1, 2013. The announcement was made today by the chair of the Sherman Board of Trustees, Peter Kevorkian, D.C., on the campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Parker University held Parker Homecoming 2012 on its campus in Dallas, Texas, on October 26 – 28. Doctors of chiropractic and massage therapists attended customized education tracks while earning continuing education credits. Classes covered numerous topics, including combining nutrition and chiropractic, multiple causes of vertebral subluxation and disease, decompression, Medicare, treating sports injuries, the neurology of stress, orthopedic testing for upper extremity injuries, and much more.

The Parker Alumni Association will present their annual awards at a luncheon held during the Parker Homecoming celebration on Friday, October 26. Awards will be presented to four noteworthy individuals who have impacted the chiropractic profession including: Dr. Rose Lepien,’91, Dr. James DeShazo,’95, Dr. Neil Gardner, ’09, and Dr. Jose Negron,’11.

On October 6, 2012, Life Chiropractic College West will be hosting the 5th Annual Lyceum as well as celebrating Delta Sigma Chi, Nu Chapter’s 20 years of service. The Lyceum was first created by Dr. BJ Palmer in Davenport, Iowa. This year’s event will feature several high-profile speakers such as Drs. Haig John, Shawn Dill, Stew Bittman, BJ Kale, Rebecca Nystrom, and Arno Burnier.

Today’s date marks 117 years since the first chiropractic adjustment was given in Davenport, Iowa. On September 18, 1895, it was Daniel David Palmer Healed Harvey Lillard (the Father of Chiropractic) making a hands on healing connection and curing a deaf janitor named Harvey Lillard. The Ryan building janitor had been plagued by years of deafness following an injury, and the hands-on thrusting and realignment of spinal vertebrae, provided a miracle today known as a chiropractic adjustment.

We could use and think of many illustrations of loyalty such as loyalty of a dog to its master… loyalty of a spouse to each other… loyalty to your team, family or country, etc. But probably the best loyalty we can think of is from the Bible. In the Book of Ruth, first chapter, Ruth said to her mother-in-law, Naomi: “Entreat me not to leave thee or forsake thee nor to return from following after thee; for whether thou goest, I will go and whether thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people will be my people and thy God, my God.”

Parker University will celebrate its 30th anniversary during a special homecoming event on its campus in Dallas, Texas from October 26-28.

At a recent school-wide assembly, Parker University presented two faculty members with its most prestigious awards–the Academic Faculty of the Year Award and Clinic Faculty of the Year Award. Dr. Nicole Lederman was presented with the Academic Faculty of the Year Award and Dr. Paula Shaff was given the Clinic Faculty of the Year Award.

Four Life University chiropractic sport science students recently traveled to famed Hayward Field in Eugene, OR., to assist Olympic hopefuls competing in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Track and Field (held June 21 through July 1).

With over 30 presentations from today’s Who’s Who in Chiropractic, the event offers three tracks including a full-day chiropractic assistant program on Friday, and a day-long series of short, bold presentations on Saturday.

It has come to my attention that yet another small group of individuals in our profession is hard at work spreading misinformation amongst their colleagues, this time in regards to CCGPP’s formulation of acute and chronic care guidelines and treatment algorithms. Since these previously published guidelines were developed for the sole reason of successfully helping the profession and its individual doctors, I would like to explain how these guidelines and subsequent algorithms came about.

The League of Chiropractic Women (LCW) inaugural event is taking place on July 27-28, 2012 in Atlanta, GA at the Atlanta Marriott. The LCW is a voice for all women in chiropractic — DCs, CAs, spouses, students, administrators, teachers and more. The focus is to empower women in chiropractic, and to develop leaders in the profession.

Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center, a non-profit organization that treats sick and disabled children through chiropractic care, recently honored Parker University with the Golden Heart Award as the chiropractic institution that raised the most funds during Oklahaven’s 2012 Have-a-Heart Campaign. Each year, hundreds of chiropractic offices, chiropractic institutions, and many other advocacy groups around the world join in the Have-A-Heart Campaign to raise funds to heal children through chiropractic at Oklahaven.

The Board of Trustees at Sherman College of Chiropractic has begun a search for the college’s next president, says Chairman Peter Kevorkian, D.C. The board is looking for a new leader to take the college to its next level of growth.

Life Chiropractic College West hosted the first World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) regional event which ran over the course of four days. Chiropractic students from 13 schools in four countries and two continents congregated at this special conference in Hayward, California. The event was recognized as a “Game-changer” for many of the attendees and prestigious guests. Some of the high-profile guests include Dr. Arno Burnier of MCQI, Research Director of NZCC, Dr. Heidi Haavik, President of Life West, Dr. Brian Kelly, Drs. Gerry Clum, Keith Overland, Joel Alcantara, Mike Flynn, Liam Schubel, and co-author of E-Myth Chiropractor, Frank Sovinsky along with several other renowned presenters.

The California Chiropractic Association (CCA) is hosting a legislative conference on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 featuring Governor Jerry Brown as the keynote speaker. The CCA legislative conference is being held in Sacramento, California and chiropractors as well as chiropractic students are urged to attend. Registration begins at 9 AM and there will be a reception and fundraiser taking place later in the afternoon.

Here is this months chiropractic news related to several seminars and conferences taking place throughout the United States. Parker Seminars and the California Chiropractic Association annual convention was held in San Diego this past weekend and it was a spectacular event. As a chiropractor member of the CCA and a long time attendee at Parker Seminars, it’s my opinion that the joined effort was a fabulous value for chiropractors. There was continuing education, top-notch speakers, loads of positive energy, and that awesome San Diego sunshine.

Parker University was recognized as one of the Healthiest Employers in North Texas by the Dallas Business Journal (DBJ). Each year, the Dallas Business Journal recognizes companies that proactively shape the health of their employees. Parker was honored as an organization that’s committed to creating a healthy workplace.

There is often many chiropractic conferences and seminars for doctors of chiropractic in the United States to choose from when it comes to getting continuing education. There’s less conferences that provide discussions of principled chiropractic, along with other topics chiropractors are passionate about. One such conference is the 31st Annual Georgia Council of Chiropractic Annual Convention and Exposition. The event takes place July 27th and 29th, 2012 at the Mall of Georgia Conference Center.

The Octagon, a think-tank and policy oriented center at Life University, Marietta, Georgia will host its fourth annual conference entitled “Reimagining Health Care: Making Health the Goal” April 12-14, 2012. This year’s conference will focus on health care reform and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) according to the Director of the Octagon, Gerard W. Clum, D.C.

This year the California Chiropractic Association (CCA) has teamed up with Parker Seminars to put on the 2012 CCA Annual Convention & Exposition. The three day conference takes place at San Diego’s Paradise Point Resort & Spa, a 44 acre beach island resort. I’m looking forward to seeing presentations by several great chiropractors and I’m excited to see colleagues again.

Dr. John Demartini, founder of the Demartini Institute and originator of the Demartini Method, recently spoke to Parker University students about clarifying their purpose, strategizing their actions, and living proactively towards their goals and dreams.

Palmer West School of Chiropractic is hosting their Annual Homecoming on May 18-20, 2012 in Santa Clara, California. The program is titled: Vision 2020 – Planning For The Future. Palmer College of Chiropractic wants you to be a part of the VISION. Chiropractors can earn up to 20 hours of continuing education at this year’s Palmer West homecoming event.

I received word via text message about an hour ago that legendary chiropractor Reggie Gold has passed away. Reggie was undoubtedly one of the most influential chiropractors to ever walk the planet. He will be greatly missed.

Life University (LIFE) continues to carry the torch for the profession, announcing a nationwide, nine-city tour designed to help the profession help itself. LIFE in Your City is a three day event in each city, and provides elements that will help DCs earn continuing education, allow their patients to hear the chiropractic message from Life University president Dr. Guy Riekeman, and take part in attracting the next generation of chiropractors.
