Invariably, at some point when talking to my patients, or anybody really, the conversation turns to where I lived before moving to Mesa five years ago. And, invariably, the question comes up of why I moved from Los Angeles to Mesa. Palmer College of Chiropractic Chancellor Dennis Marchiori, D.C., has announced the selection of Robert “Bucky” Percuoco, D.C., Long Grove, Iowa, as Vice Chancellor for Academics (VCA) for the College. Dr. Percuoco was identified from a pool of 12 local and national candidates for the position. As VCA, Dr. Percuoco will oversee all matters of academic affairs on each of the three campuses and will also serve as a member of the College’s Executive Administrative Team. Palmer’s campuses are located in Davenport, Iowa, San Jose, Calif., and Port Orange, Florida.
E-mails related to student loans, chiropractic schools, and general questions regarding practicing the field of chiropractic have been hitting my inbox with greater frequency lately. My apologies to those that I have not had a chance to e-mail back replies to. As I’ve done before, I prefer to address many of the questions as posed so that I can link to them when others ask questions in the future. Far more efficient on my part than to e-mail each person individually, since I too have a practice to maintain. Here’s one selected from a group of e-mails I’ve been meaning to reply to.
Parker College of Chiropractic held its largest Alumni reception in Las Vegas during the Parker 2010 Vegas Seminar. Parker alumni and friends gathered and reconnected. This year’s event was exclusive to alumni and guest only and was the most well attended Vegas alumni event in the history of Parker College.
I don’t think I know a single chiropractor that doesn’t like free continuing education, and I believe it’s available in many states throughout the country. In nearly every state of the US I believe chiropractors are required to complete continuing education (CE) hours on a regular basis. In some states educational requirements are done yearly, and in other states educational requirements are taken care of biannually. Chiropractic continuing education hours are typically 12 to 20 hours per year, depending on the state educational hours are being applied for. I like going for continuing education each year, not only for learning new information, but for getting together with other chiropractors and finding out what they’ve been up to the past year or so.
The prestigious Chiropractor of the Year Award was presented at Parker Seminars Las Vegas – the world’s largest chiropractic seminar to Dr. Bill DeMoss from DeMoss Chiropractic in Newport Beach, California, Dr. Robert Kipp from Pro-Health Chiropractic in Fairfield, Connecticut, Dr. Jeffrey Cottingame from The Spinal Clinic in Durant, Oklahoma, Dr. Randy Koski from Koski Chiropractic in Chelmsford, Ontario, and Dr. Martin Harvey from Align Chiropractic in Melbourne, Australia.
Patients often walk into our office and stare in amazement at the huge cork board by the front door. What are they looking at? They see dozens of pictures of children on our Chiro-Kid wall, ranging in age from 10 hours old through elementary and high school. Even the UPS person and other delivery people are taken aback the first time they come in when they see the pictures of happy kids around our front entrance.
Kim Khauv, a doctor of chiropractic and faculty member and alumnus from Life Chiropractic College West, led a team of twelve college interns who traveled to rural parts of Cambodia to provide chiropractic care. Palmer College of Chiropractic has earned another feather in its accreditation cap by receiving regional accreditation for all three of its campuses. The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) has notified Palmer that the College–including the main campus in Davenport, Iowa, and the branch campuses in Port Orange, Florida, and San Jose, California has been granted the full, 10-year accreditation by the NCA.
December 2009 is on its way out and January 2010 is quickly approaching. While chiropractors throughout the world will take time off during the holidays, adjusting Santa Claus and family, the topic of chiropractor careers and chiropractic employment will be back in the forefront when the new year kicks in. Scanning chiropractic classifieds posted during the past week, I expected to see several related to associate positions and vacation coverage, but I didn’t realize there were so many work opportunities available for licensed doctors of chiropractic. In a single screenshot from a chiropractors classified advertising RSS feed, I noticed several offices that were hiring, along with a couple of individuals posting their availability to work as associates.
Happy Anniversary COCSA! was the historical celebration that rang out in St. Pete Beach Florida November 12-14th at the Trade Winds Hotel. The meeting celebrated COCSA and their 40 years of service to the State Associations and the Chiropractic Profession. Executive Directors from 48 state associations, National key opinion leaders, and Doctors of Chiropractic from throughout the states came together for top-notch educational presentations, dynamic speakers, organizational business, political and legislative updates, networking opportunities, increased camaraderie and fun.
Researchers at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) clinic facility, 741 Brady St., Davenport, on the campus of Palmer College of Chiropractic, are looking for 165 people in the Quad Cities with hypertension, or high blood pressure, to participate in a clinical research study with the potential for significant impact on the treatment of hypertension. Patient recruitment began in late November. Participants must have high blood pressure and be between 21 and 75 years of age.
A festive celebration marked the official grand opening of the Standard Process Student Activity Center located on Parker College of Chiropractic’s campus. Standard Process Inc.®, a nutritional food supplement manufacturer, bestowed a generous one million dollar donation to Parker College to help advance the college’s academic potential and to further the education of future doctors of chiropractic. Part of the donation was used to support renovations and the naming of a new state-of-the-art student activity center which is stocked with the latest workout and weight training equipment that will be used by students, faculty, and staff.

Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic is now known as Sherman College of Chiropractic. The college’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to authorize the college’s name change on October 17, 2009, during its fall meeting.
Following what might be the most expansive search for a chiropractic college leader in the history of the profession, the Palmer College of Chiropractic Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the unanimous selection of Dennis Marchiori, D.C., Ph.D., D.A.C.B.R., as chancellor of Palmer College. His appointment will take effect December 15, 2009.
Chiropractic history was made on Sunday, October 11th on the streets of Chicago when all runners on Team NPCO for Chiropractic successfully crossed the finish line at the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in front of over one million cheering spectators. Waking up early and bearing the chilly 33 degree weather, runners from various parts of the country ran 26.2 miles on behalf of Non-Profit Chiropractic Organization (NPCO).
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), has awarded a supplemental grant to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) for its clinical study on the relationship between back pain and possible abnormal function of the supportive muscles in the back. The PCCR is located on the campus of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
California Chiropractic Association (CCA) member and non member chiropractors gathered on Wednesday, October 21st, for a combined Los Angeles Metro and Santa Monica District CCA meeting/presentation. The event, which featured chiropractic attorney Shawn Steel, was held at the world famous International Sport Science Institute, a facility owned by long time chiropractor, Dr. Leroy Perry.
The Parker Alumni Association recognized alumni who have made a tremendous difference in the chiropractic profession during the Parker Annual Homecoming and Class Reunion in Dallas, Texas.
Parker Seminars partnered with several of the chiropractic industry leaders to present Parker College of Chiropractic students with 10 scholarships totaling 37,250 dollars during the Dallas Parker Seminar. Scholarship recipients were chosen by the Parker College of Chiropractic scholarship committee. Students who applied for the scholarships were required to write an essay about what they have learned from speakers during Parker Seminars and Parker College assemblies.
Chiropractic waiting rooms are being transformed into patient education rooms thanks to a new service launched by Now You Know (NYK). The chiropractic website and Internet educational service, Now You Know, has created an in office chiropractic news service that streams information from online to television screens in chiropractic reception areas.
From what I’ve gathered by researching chiropractic publications, journals, historical archives and other sources from around the golden state, Chiropractic as a profession in the state of California, experienced a significant amount of activity in the 1940s, especially in Los Angeles. In 1943, the year Warner Bros. won Best Picture Academy Award for the film Casablanca, chiropractors in the state of California got to be part of a federally insured state credit union.

Members of the Sports Council chapter of Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West Campus in San Jose, California, provided chiropractic sports care services to more than 800 competitors in Augusts 2009 National Senior Games, the largest multi-sport event in the world for seniors. Competitors in the two-week National Senior Games, held primarily at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., were able to enhance their performances through chiropractic care. There were more than 10,000 athletes participating in the August 1-15 competition.
Parker Seminars played host to more than 1,500 chiropractors, chiropractic assistants, massage therapists, and chiropractic students from all over the world. The seminar included Parker traditions along with many new events, speakers, and topics where attendees discovered, shared, and celebrated the profession.
The California Chiropractic Association is doing it again, FREE continuing education for CCA members in the state of California. The events take place in October and November and are going to be held in San Diego and the San Francisco Millbrae areas. Celebrating 81 years, the CCA held 12 hour California relicensing seminars this summer as well. Oklahaven Children’s Chiropractic Center is excited to announce the annual “Have-A-Heart” campaign. This worldwide event will be held during Valentine’s week, February 8th – 14th, 2010. Doctors, chiropractic students, members of the Davenport City Council and the public were all on-hand to witness the first ever Chiropractic Awareness Day of Davenport, Iowa in the courtyard of the B.J. and Mabel Palmer Residence in Davenport, Iowa.
Dr. Fabrizio Mancini, president of Parker College of Chiropractic, along with other Texas health care leaders met with Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer in Dallas, Texas where they examined the precise state of national health care reform discussions to determine how and where the chiropractic profession will be most effective in directing messages of concern and calls for inclusion in any reform program.

The H1N1 swine flu virus is most notable for its tendency to be drearily lackluster, tame and below average as influenza goes, but on June 11, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) pushed the hyper-panic button for the swine flu anyway, triggering a global chain reaction of emergency medical preparations.
Parker College of Chiropractic held a dedication ceremony commemorating the naming of the Dr. Alfred Zimmer States Diversified Technique Lab on Parker’s campus in honor of the memory of Dr. States, a man who dedicated his life to chiropractic and Parker College of Chiropractic. Family and friends of Dr. States attended the dedication along with members of the community, students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded a three-year grant for approximately $1.3 million to the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) for a study called Co-Management of Older Adults With Low Back Pain by Medical Doctors and Doctors of Chiropractic. Throughout this project, PCCR researchers will be collaborating with researchers at the Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency Program; the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa; the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine; the University of Iowa Center on Aging; and the College of Health Professions at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pa.
