Los Angeles Chiropractic Landmark Closing Doors August 2011

The end of a long history in chiropractic is coming to Los Angeles, as the Cleveland Chiropractic College system has announced today, its decision to close the Cleveland Chiropractic College Los Angeles campus in August 2011. The family owned chiropractic school, operated in the Los Angeles area for the past 60 years, after Carl Cleveland purchased Ratledge College of Chiropractic in the 1950s. According to reports from the college, the Kansas City campus will not be affected by the closure taking place in Los Angeles.

Cleveland Chiropractic College system president, Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, announced today the decision of the board of trustees to cease operations at Cleveland Chiropractic College-Los Angeles in 2011. Cleveland-LA will no longer accept new undergraduate or DC students, closing the Los Angeles campus at the end of summer trimester in August 2011.

According to the news, the most important immediate consideration is the accommodating of current Los Angeles chiropractic students, as to which chiropractic colleges they will be transferred to. Cleveland writes…

The most important and immediate consideration is accommodating current Cleveland-LA students. College leadership has initiated discussions with Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, at Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS) located 24 miles from the Cleveland-LA campus. SCUHS is agreeable to accommodating all Cleveland-LA students in good standing. Cleveland and SCUHS have reached an agreement in principle to accomplish this without impacting the students’ anticipated graduation dates, tuition or fees, provided they remain in good standing once enrolled at SCUHS. This is in the spirit of, and in compliance with, accreditation policies.

For students currently studying at the LA campus, the chiropractic program at Southern California University of Health Sciences is perhaps the logical choice, since students wouldn’t have to move too far from where they live today, while attending chiropractic school in Southern California. SCUHS is located about 24 miles from the CCCLA campus. It appears that the two schools will be working together in hopes the current chiropractic students can successfully graduate from a Los Angeles area chiropractic school.

These are interesting times for chiropractic education in the state of California, with former Life Chiropractic College West president, Gerry Clum, recently retiring from the Northern California West Coast campus, and now today’s news. There is fresh leadership at Life West, and I suspect that school may see an increase in enrollment, as a result of the closure announced today.

While the Cleveland Chiropractic College didn’t publicize information, to my knowledge, the Los Angeles campus was currently the most expensive chiropractic program in the United States. Add to that the fact that living in Los Angeles is far more expensive than living in cities like Atlanta Georgia, Davenport Iowa, or even Whittier California. The College news continued…

The decision to close Cleveland Chiropractic College-Los Angeles has been difficult; however, challenging economic conditions and a continuing downward enrollment trend impacting the California chiropractic colleges dictates that this consolidation is necessary. This change does not affect Cleveland Chiropractic College-Kansas City, a separate entity that has maintained an affiliation with Cleveland-LA since 1951.

I received phone calls in my chiropractic chiropractic office today and texts from chiropractors across the country, asking if I knew anything about the school’s plans to close its campus. While I was aware with the schools struggle to maintain enrollment during the past few years, I was not expecting closure of the campus at this point in time. For what it’s worth, it may be better to close as a chiropractic school, rather than have morphed into something not chiropractic. After August 2011, the state of California will still have three chiropractic programs for prospective students to choose from. Life Chiropractic College West in the bay area, Palmer College of Chiropractic West in the city of San Jose, and Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier.
