Winter Solstice Photos

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

December 21, 2008 marks the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere. It is a time when the Sun’s position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance from the position of the observer, meaning in the northern hemisphere it is the shortest day of the year.

The winter solstice marks the reversal in gradually shortening days and the event is celebrated in many cultures as a time of renewing or rebirth. Here is a collection of photographs taken in different locations throughout the Northern Hemisphere during the day of winter solstice.

In the northern hemisphere, 2008 Winter solstice takes place at 12:04 on December 21. It marks the beginning of lengthening days and it’s a great time to reflect on the past six months, and celebrate the birth of the days ahead.

Winter Solstice 2008 – Shortest Day of the Year

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

The shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere is upon us as December 21, 2008 marks the winter solstice for those living north of the equator. For many cultures the winter solstice marks the recognition of rebirth. It is a time for festivals, gatherings, and various winter solstice traditions and celebrations across the globe.

Winter Solstice Stonehenge(photo: Winter solstice at Stonehenge – credit: tarotastic)

The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still) and the astronomical event takes place two times each year. This years 2008 winter solstice is on December 21st and the 2009 summer solstice takes place on June 21.

The winter solstice can actually be calculated down to the second and it occurs at the instant when the Suns position in the sky is at its greatest angular distance from the observer. Even though the event is instantaneous, the full 24-hour period is commonly considered the winter solstice. Most in North America recognize the seasonal significance of the longest night as the first day of winter (much of the northern United States has received plenty of snowfall and share of colder weather conditions this month), a time of cold-weather activities like snowman building, skating, skiing, and snowboarding.

From culture to culture, the winter solstice is greatly recognized as a time of rebirth, with rituals, celebrations, festivals, and numerous traditions practiced on the days surrounding the solstice. The Extreme of Winter or Winter Solstice Festival is celebrated by the Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, and other Asian cultures. The origins of the winter festival are traced back to yin and yang philosophy of balance and harmony. With longer daylight hours approaching, an increase in positive energy flows in.

Other festivities, celebrations and events taking place across the globe, during the time of the winter solstice include Hogmanay (New Years Eve celebration) in Scotland, Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) in Peru, Junkanoo (masquerade and street festival) in the Bahamas, numerous local festivals throughout the United States, and many others worldwide.

Winter solstice traditions date back for many centuries but those that continue to be popular to this day include spending time with loved ones, feasting, singing, dancing, and going to the chiropractor on Monday (you may have guessed I added that last one).

If you happen to be in the southern hemisphere, happy summer solstice! For those in the northern hemisphere, happy 2008 winter solstice to you! @ 3:03 pm | Article ID: 1229814253

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

From what I’m seeing in search results regarding weather conditions in my hometown of Long Island, New Jersey, and all over the northern East Coast, it looks like road conditions are quite hazardous, and schools have been closing all over. If you hadn’t already seen it, there was even enough snow in Las Vegas this week to shut down the airport, and locally here in Los Angeles County there were snow in Malibu and plenty of snow falling in Lancaster. Many schools across the US are out today and will be closed for the remainder of the holidays, reopening in January 2009. With school closures comes family travel, and we at are wishing everybody safe and healthy travels this holiday season.

chiropractor shoveling snow with the kids(photo: chiropractor and his kid shoveling snow off of the driveway)

Having people come in with low back complaints after shoveling snow is not common in my Los Angeles office, but I suspect those in Palmdale and Lancaster are making increased visits to the chiropractor this week, since snow shoveling is not something they’re accustomed to. Even on the East Coast, where heavy snowfall is common every year, many of us are shoveling snow for the first time of the season. Be careful to pace yourself and do your best to avoid any unnecessary injuries.

Remember that chiropractors have kids too, and chiropractic offices throughout the United States will be hosting holiday hours during the next two weeks. Our chiropractic office in Los Angeles will be open on Monday and a half day Tuesday, and will be closed Christmas eve, Christmas Day, and the day after Christmas. Expect a similar schedule for your local chiropractors offices. Many chiropractors have spoken with are working a morning shift only on Christmas Eve and they’ll be closed the remainder of the week. Some offices stay open on Friday, and there are those chiropractors that maintain Saturday morning hours, but the information of collected shows most offices are going to be closed from the 24th to the 28th of December. We’ll be on a holiday posting news schedule during the next two weeks in order to spend some time with family and friends.

I scanned through news archives for Christmas holiday related posts, and came back with this one on our Chiropractic Christmas Tree we display in the office. We didn’t add to the miniature spines to the tree this year (office is out of stock), but it’s again nicely decorated, and there’s plenty of chocolate stacking up under the tree.

From way back in December of 2001 there was a post from Dr. James Sigafoose and a Christmas wish. I liked this… Be the biggest and best you can be and let no one steal your dreams. Dreams are to look at and be had and it is no ones right or place to attempt to steal them from you. Think not of lack or defeat. And remember the only people that ever failed, are those that quit.

We’ve received some really neat holiday postcards both at my ADIO Chiropractic office in Los Angeles and the Planet Chiropractic office in Venice. I heard something on the radio regarding some pastor complaining about people sending family photos as holiday cards, but personally I think they’re awesome. This year we put the cards on the tree and it seems nearly everyone has done a family photo card. Here’s a great example of a Chiropractic Christmas Postcard sent to us from Capitol Chiropractic in Sacramento, California.

Another archived news Christmas related post features a 30 minute audio presentation from Dr. James Sigafoose, which was given in Pennsylvania during December of 2000. Hard to believe that there is a 28K and 56K (old-school modems) link for Windows media download of the audio, and it still works! That is if you have a Windows media player with the proper codecs.

I located two different versions of T’was a night before Christmas, one was from December of 2001 and featured jolly St. Nick going to the chiropractor, and the other was about a vaccine program injecting kids with Mercury (not what you’d expect for a holiday jingle).

I found a news article from December of 2005 with me sitting on the lap of Santa Claus and an article about chiropractors keeping Santa going while he deals with road conditions and flight delays throughout the world. I also located in article from November 2003 with a story on Life Chiropractic College West and a local shelter in Hayward California. I’m fairly certain the Hayward chiropractic clinic is still located on industrial Blvd. and I believe nearly all (if not all) of the school-based chiropractic clinics across the US have been offering some kind of special holiday program for those in need.

Whether you’re staying home or traveling abroad this holiday season, be safe and be healthy, and have a joyful experience. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas and a Happy New Year! @ 1:23 pm | Article ID: 1229721859

2008 Holiday Chiropractic Postcards

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of postcards and postcard marketing for not only chiropractic businesses, but for other small businesses as well. Sending postcards was on my list of 23 surefire small-business marketing techniques for 2008, and I’ll be recommending postcards for 2009 as well.

I received two postcards yesterday from two different California chiropractors and I wanted to share them both here. The first one comes from Capitol Chiropractic in Sacramento, and it features seasons greetings from 3 wonderful ladies (I’ve never actually met Angela Basset but I’m a pushover for big floppy kissable ears).

First off, I greatly appreciate the postcard I received from Beth, Jeri, and Angela. captive for some reason you stumbled across this post and you’re looking for a chiropractor in the Sacramento area, their office comes highly recommended.

It takes work to put together a postcard like this (but it’s worth it). First, you can’t deny the energy that comes from genuinely sending a card like this to all the people you love, there’s no way to break that law of positive attraction. They took the time to come up with a creative photo, selected a postcard design, went through the printing process, hand labeled countless envelopes, invested in postage and mailed all the cards out (while still staying focused on serving the people in their chiropractic practice). With that level of attention to detail, how do you think they would take care of you and your family if you were a patient there?

Kevin Joe from Southern California

The next card came from chiropractor Kevin Joe from Southern California. On the back of the card Kevin was thanking me for helping to promote CCA events in Southern California (like this one coming up in San Diego) and I thought it was pretty cool that he thought about us during the holiday season.

OK, that is one awesome looking photo, don’t you think? I thought the whole card looks great, the lighted palm trees, handwritten message, and everyone’s names included on the card. Hey hey, looks like Uncle Joe is making his nieces and nephews famous on some guys chiropractic blog.

I have the same thing to say about Dr. Kevin as I do about Dr. Jeri and Beth, he’s a spectacular individual, that’s incredibly humble, and is extremely passionate about what he does. How many of you took the time to gather up members of your family and take a photograph for the holidays? Sadly, I haven’t done so yet this year. What we have been doing in my office though, is taking pictures in front of the Christmas tree of everyone that wants one. That’s been a big hit and we’re going to have lots of photographs as a result.

Dr. Kevin Joe runs Joe Family Chiropractic in Fullerton, California. The office address is 1370 Brea Blvd., Suite 120 – Fullerton, CA 92835 For those seeking a family chiropractor in that area, call 714-447-3361.

Thank you Dr. Kevin, thank you Beth and Dr. Jeri, and thanks to everyone that takes the time to read through my often ramblings of chiropractic mishmash. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Festivus for the rest of us, and good tidings to all!

CCA California Chiropractic 12 Hour Relicensing Seminars 2009

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

In my recent posts about x-ray seminars and Karl Parker seminars I mentioned not yet having information for CCA California Chiropractic Association seminars taking place in 2009. Last year the CCA held affordable relicensing seminars throughout the state of California, and I was trusting they would continue with a similar format for 2009.

Less than an hour from me completing the post regarding the x-ray seminars, I had a fax received at my office from the CCA regarding an upcoming chiropractic seminar taking place in San Diego.

I ran the fax through my Fujitsu ScanSnap S510 (every chiropractor should have one of these in their office) and saved it as a PDF file. One of the girls in the office than converted the seminar fax to a text format, so we could post it here, giving the CCA some extra exposure for their January license renewal program.

The event takes place in San Diego at the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa, which is on East Mission Bay Drive. There is contact information at the end of this post. I’d recommend calling the CCA for seminar costs, since there was a number of different prices listed, depending on whether doctors of chiropractic were members of the CCA or not.

The CCA has secured special room rates at the hotel and I’d recommend calling them to get information about discount rates when registering for the event. Here is the information from the fax…

Time Person of the Year 2008

By Daria Belov

President elect Barack Obama has been named the 2008 Person of the Year by Time magazine. Person of the Year (formerly Man of the Year) is an annual issue of the Time newsmagazine that features and profiles a person that “for better or for worse, …has done the most to influence the events of the year.”

President elect Barack Obama has been named the 2008 Person of the YearAccording to the magazine, the tradition of selecting a Man of the Year began in 1927, with Time editors contemplating newsworthy stories possible during a slow news week.

Barack Obama, the elected 44th president of United States likely does not come as a surprise for 2008, since the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, (for good or ill) is selected as Person of the Year by Time.

2008 runners-up included Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and film director Zhang Yimou, who designed the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony.

Since the lists 1920’s beginning, every serving President of the United States has been a Person of the Year at least one time with the exceptions of Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and Gerald Ford.

Time Person of the Year 2007 was Vladimir Putin and the 2006 Time magazine Person of the Year was You (the millions of anonymous contributors of user-generated content to sites like Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Digg, and others). @ 7:49 am | Article ID: 1229529006

Las Vegas Trade Shows January 2009

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

While many folks are focused on getting their holiday shopping and shipping done before the end of this week, there are those that have had the additional task of getting packages shipped to Las Vegas, in preparation of conferences and trade shows taking place the first week of January. Las Vegas is the place to be for conferences in January, with megatrade shows like the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the Adult Movie Awards & Expo (AVN), the Affiliate Summit Conference West (ASC), Wordcamp Las Vegas, and even Parker Chiropractic Seminars.

CES - Consumer Electronics Show(photo: exhibitor floor at 2008 CES – credit: International CES)

The 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the Mega consumer electronics event. It features keynotes from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Sony Corp. Chairman and CEO Sir Howard Stringer, Ford Motor Co. President and CEO Alan Mulally, a dazzling number of tradeshow sessions, super sessions, award shows, and celebrity appearances, featuring everything related to the consumer technology industry.

Attendees can expect to see OLED (organic light emitting diode) TVs by companies like Sony and Samsung. Touchscreen netbooks are expected to be a big hit at the 2009 show, with items like Intel’s Convertible Classmate PC and new Eee PC models coming from ASUS. CES begins on Thursday, January 8, 2009 and goes through Sunday, January 11, 2009.

CES is not the only tradeshow taking place at the Sands Expo and Convention Center during these four days in January, the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2009 takes place on nearly an identical schedule. Featuring seminars, exhibits, industry parties, and a Saturday night awards show at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, the adult film industry will be celebrating its 26th annual bash in Las Vegas.

It’s not all web starlets and red carpet events with Jenna Haze, Belladonna and other current adult film celebrities, the industry seminars focus on issues typically facing the other industries as well. Sessions such as Staying Competitive in a Changing Environment or Staking Your Claim on the Web (like getting links with linkbait) could similarly be applied to chiropractic businesses, or nearly any other brick-and-mortar business in the United States. The AVN Entertainment Expo site has all the details.

The weekend of January 10th and 11th also features WordCamp:Las Vegas, a two-day event highlighting features, presentations, and open sessions centered around the world’s most popular blogging platform, WordPress (which powers the chiropractic blogs and millions of others across the net). Anybody that blogs should make an effort to attend at least one wordcamp event, as there’s so much to learn and to the community is spectacular.

We’re not done yet, Affiliate Summit West 2009 (ASW) takes place at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas starting January 11th and goes through January 13th. ASW is the premier affiliate marketing conference of the year, featuring educational sessions, exhibit halls with affiliate merchants and vendors, and even a Monday keynote presentation by the star of Wine Library TV, Gary Vaynerchuk. Visit the affiliate summit homepage for Las Vegas registration and all show details.

Just as people are heading out from ASW on the 13th, chiropractors will be arriving on the 15th, for the 2009 Parker Las Vegas Chiropractic Seminar at the Las Vegas Hilton. The three-day chiropractic event is one of the biggest in the industry, and it features continuing education programs, political and business classes, an expo center, and celebrations of chiropractic success and service.

Here is to January in Las Vegas! @ 9:20 pm | Article ID: 1229491267

Photos: 1998 Chiropractic Trip to Panama

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

It’s hard to believe that these photographs are older than the web site. They were taken in May of 1998 and the site did not launch until December of the same year. There has been audio and video online from the 1990s Panamá mission’s since a short time after the chiropractic website was launched, there have also been dozens of Panamá related news articles. I mentioned cleaning the office and finding photographs stored on hard drives and I’ll be posting some of them here for historic purposes.

Below are five different photographs from the 1998 CREW chiropractic mission to Panama.

Dora Boyd de Perez Balladares Y La Asociacion de Quiropracticos Atienden a la Poblacion Panamena Del 25 Al 30 De Mayo De 1998 – Signs and banners like this one appeared throughout the country of Panamá during the month of May 1998. This one was posted outside a civic gymnasium in the area of Penonome. Dora Boyd de Perez Balladares was the president’s wife (First Lady of Panamá) when we were there for that trip. The mission was cosponsored by the government of Panamá which offered free chiropractic care to the entire country’s population.

The above photo was taken inside the same gymnasium (we provided adjustments there for five days that week). The chiropractor to the left is Dr. Paul from Canada and that’s me on the right (I have not had a goatee in many years). You may notice our skin appears a bit shiny, that’s because it was about 110 degrees inside the gymnasium, and it was raining everyday.

Dr. Noel from Ohio sets up for a seated cervical chiropractic adjustment inside the gymnasium. In the background you can see the gymnasium grandstands. There were times that these were full, six or more chiropractors providing adjustments from nine o’clock in the morning until about two o’clock in the afternoon (the peak of heat and just before the rain came down). The top of the photo shows the tin roofs that were common in the city gymnasiums. As hot as things got in the gymnasium for us, I can still remember many people sitting down for an adjustment, and their skin felt like they had just walked out of walk-in refrigerator. They were calm and cool as anything and we were drinking mass fluids just to stay hydrated.

Kids going crazy in a Panamá school yard. Looks like some of these kids are testing their gang signs. Remember this was 1998 and I don’t think a lot of these kids had been in front of a video camera before. When we were not in the gymnasiums, we broke off into groups and provided adjustments to kids at the local schools. You can see me in the far background wearing a red shirt (all the kids are in white so I’m not hard to spot). This photo was taken during afternoon recess and the kids were going crazy in the schools center playground. We went classroom to classroom giving chiropractic adjustments to all students and teachers, a few days that week.

This last photo was taken inside the classroom at a private school. I don’t remember what grade this was (I think it was first grade) but we had an incredible experience there. When we arrived the kids were having English class so the teacher decided to have them sing a few songs for us. They did the chiropractic favorite classic… Head Shoulders, Knees and Toes.

Awesome times in Panamá!

2008 Year End Chiropractor Thank Yous

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

There’s some cleaning up going on at the planetchiropractic world headquarters in Los Angeles, and I’m being thankful while going through files and documents from the years passed. There are lots of chiropractors to thank, but I like to do some shout outs on names and addresses from time to time. Your continued use of the site and your support is greatly appreciated, many thanks.

The little guy in the image above (n8) used to appear on the homepage of the planetc1site around January 2000. It’s one of thousands of images sitting on local hard drives. We actually took steps recently the move this and other content online, perhaps on the chiropractic media domain.

Saying thank you from planetchiropractic…

Thanks also to all of the chiropractors who participated in the Cinco de Mayo May 5th chiropractors post earlier this year. The “meet a chiropractor” series came out of that post, and we still have chiropractic interviews to add to the news, thanks to all of the chiropractors that provided feedback.

Some of the chiropractors since the May 5 post were Danella Whittaker, Nick Baker, Scott Swanson of San Francisco, Nicholas Campos, Tim Swift, and others.

Thanks again everybody!
