RSS, or really simple syndication, has been evolving since the late 1990s. Its growing popularity has been significant since around 2005, when icons for RSS feeds began appearing more frequently on websites and blogs. RSS feeds are not just for articles and blog posts and there’s many different ways feeds are being utilized on the web today. We began incorporating RSS feeds for our news and classified advertising in mid-2006. This past weekend someone asked me about accessing RSS feeds for classifieds and it reminded me to address the topic.

There are three different RSS feeds regular visitors to planetchiropractic.com typically subscribe to. In fact, there is a page on the site, dedicated specifically to subscribing to our chiropractic RSS feeds. Thanks to the advancement of modern-day browsers such as Firefox 3, Internet Explorer 7, and even Google Chrome, viewing RSS feeds has been made much easier. I’m using a Firefox V3 browser with Google Reader to view my subscribed RSS feeds. The screenshot below displays the latest 10 posts made to the chiropractic blog pages, which are all highlighted in my RSS reader.

You may not want to subscribe to too many RSS feeds and I completely understand why someone would even be limiting their subscriptions to RSS on Planet Chiropractic. Of the different kinds of feeds we offer, it’s been interesting to see which ones get used to the most, and also how they are being used.

In May of 2007 I mentioned that chiropractic jobs and other classifieds were available for RSS subscription. We’ve been getting good feedback on those subscribing to RSS for classified ads. Reason number one is that the feeds are updated three or more times per day, and organizing classified ads in ones RSS reader, is often times easier than visiting the classified pages and browsing through all the posts.

Another reason for the popularity of classifieds RSS feeds, is that they are typically short in description, and read well on an iPhone. Our chiropractor iPhone fan boys (and girls) seem to enjoy that very much. Honestly, I know I can view chiropracticclassifieds RSS feeds on my Apple Ipod touch, but I haven’t found myself doing so. I am perfectly happy viewing feeds from my desktop.

More information regarding Planet Chiro RSS updates is available for those that want to read it, if you are new to RSS, hopefully it will provide you with enough information to get the gist of what it can be used for.

For those that may want to view our chiropractic news in a daily e-mail, they are RSS subscriptions available for that as well. Look to the upper right hand corner of this post (as long as you’re viewing this content on our website) and you’ll find a place to add your e-mail address. After subscribing, you’ll be receiving RSS feeds in your e-mail inbox, it’s as simple as that.
