Spinal Claus is Returning to Chiropractic College to Help Local Shelter

Life West News

HAYWARD, California — You better stand straight. You better not slouch. You better lift with your legs while moving that couch. Spinal Claus is coming to Hayward.

Chiropractic Spinal Claus On Wednesday, December 10, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Life Chiropractic College West Health Center will be holding its annual food drive for Hayward’s Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO). For just one (or more) canned or dry-food donation, participants will get their photos taken with-the one, and probably the only-Spinal Claus. Participants of all ages are welcome to this special event. The holiday photos with the jolly, yet well-postured, one (with a chiropractic theme, of course) will make excellent gifts and keepsakes, while at the same time helping a wonderful cause.

“We really appreciate being the recipients of Spinal Claus food donations again,” reports Nancy Schluntz, executive director of FESCO. It’s a pretty important part of our Adopt-a-Family program. With the continued economic downturn, we have more people than ever asking for help this year-many of them have said they can do without gifts, if they could get one of the wonderful food boxes we’re able to put together thanks to the donated food. Whatever Spinal Claus and the participants can generate toward that cause will be most welcome and very much appreciated!”

FESCO provides emergency shelter and extended supportive services to homeless families with children throughout Alameda County. The organization’s shelter houses approximately 80 to 100 families throughout each year, including over 200 children. At any given time, there are 15 to 18 children in the FESCO Shelter. In addition, FESCO provides supportive services to about 200 at-risk, formerly homeless families with children who are working hard to sustain housing in the community. Life West has been a long time active supporter of FESCO.

The Life West Health Center is located at 25001 Industrial Blvd. (at Depot Road), Hayward-plenty of free parking is available. The photos will be taken in the Health Center’s lobby. For more information about the Spinal Claus Food Drive, contact the Life West Health Center at 510-780-4500, ext. 4930. @ 9:43 am | Article ID: 1069868597

Get Up and Smell the Coffee

by Sharon Gorman, D.C.

I hate to say NO. Especially when I’m asked to do something that I can do. I hate to say NO especially to my kids. I want to be able to do it all, all of the time. When I don’t get a clear picture and plan for what is important to me then I will fall on my butt. That simple, I have tested it time and time again. I can’t be all things to all people. I’ve got to be willing to delegate. I’ve got to be willing to say not now. I’ve got to be willing to say NO.

When I don’t then I end up not taking care of myself and putting myself last and again I land up on my butt. I know what happened when I took my husband for granted and didn’t schedule date nights and didn’t spend time sharing my feelings with him. When I did that my marriage ended up on it’s butt. Then I dusted myself off and realized how important my marriage is and decided to not put it at the bottom of the priority list.

I finally have got to get up and smell the coffee and realize that I can’t help any one else if there is nothing of me left because I, yes I, have allowed myself to fall on my butt again. The price is high. It’s like the patient who only gets adjusted when they are hurting. Why do I have to experience pain before I realize that I can’t keep on going the way that I am and not get some sort of dis-ease.

Yes, it might be an inconvenience and expense for a person to get adjusted each week, yet we all know the payoff is greater. That is how I have got to start thinking in regard to taking care of myself. I wouldn’t go a week without getting adjusted. I rarely go a week without exercising or eating properly or sleeping properly. I have to schedule down time so that I can regroup and just be. I think what makes it so difficult for me is because most of the things that I do in my life that keep me so busy I truly enjoy so so much.

I have a blessed life and when I’m burning the candle at both ends it stops feeling blessed. What a shame.

I confess my true weakness to you in hope that I will stop doing it and that maybe you can relate a bit and take something away from me sharing my issue. With the Holidays coming up guard yourself from burn out. Choose what you are willing to do and what you are not willing to do carefully. If there is nothing left of you then there won’t be anything left for you to give. If you allow the craziness of the season to penetrate you then what Joy can you truly feel. Remember the word NO because it could save us all from ending up on our butts.

Planet Chiropractic Videos from 1990s

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Back in the 1990s we had 4 chiropractic videos available for sale. All were on VHS and they could be ordered online. Since those days, people have moved to DVD and even online video downloads. Planet Chiropractic stopped offering videos for sale around 2002 but I’d like to one day have a few of these available for watching online or downloading in a standard video watching format.

Stew Bittman VideoThe Mission of Chiropractic Video – The Mission of Chiropractic with Dr. Stew Bittman was an 88 minute recording filmed in a chiropractic office in Lake Tahoe, CA.

Since 1986 Dr. Stew Bittman has operated a successful, high volume practice in South Lake Tahoe, California. In his practice Dr. Bittman shares the chiropractic message with thousands of adults and children. In addition he has participated in five chiropractic missions in Central America.

In this video, recorded at one of his weekly evening talks, Dr. Bittman communicates the big picture of chiropractic – the ability to express our life’s full potential free from interference. Included in the beginning of the video is a slide presentation from Dr. Bittman’s third Panama mission, during which 147 chiropractors adjusted 315,000 people in a total of 6 days.

Speaking from his heart Dr. Bittman passionately teaches about the mission of chiropractic in a clear, humorous and moving way. Listen and learn how you can inspire your practice members to become missionaries by realizing the chiropractic message and embodying the principle in their own lives.

If I ever get it online, I’ll embed it or post a link here.

Charla QuiropracticaCharla Quiropractic: Chiropractic Video in Spanish!

30 Minute Video with Luis Ocon, D.C.

  • Thirteen percent of our nation’s population speak Spanish as a primary language.
  • Spanish is the second most widely-spoken language in the world. English is third.
  • The U.S. Hispanic population grew 58% between 1990 and 2000.

Who is teaching them about chiropractic?

Join Dr. Luis Ocon for a 30 minute introduction to chiropractic, completely in Spanish. A great video.

“I show all of my spanish speaking patients this video.” – Joe Accurso, Miami – Florida

Dr. Luis covers topics such as the adjustment, subluxations, the importance of care for the entire family, and the role of the nervous system.

This was once the best selling video on Planet Chiropractic. I had a copy posted online but video formats have changed and that video is no longer available. I’ll post a link here, or embed a video player if it becomes available again.

Birth Trauma VideoBirth Trauma: A Modern Epidemic – Video

10 Minute Video by Jeanne Ohm, D.C.

Birth Trauma: A Modern Epidemic is designed to educate parents about the devastating effects of birth on the newborn’s developing nervous system. Using footage of current births, along with supporting research, this 10 minute video is designed to make an impact for change to modern day birthing procedures.

The importance of chiropractic care from conception and throughout life is emphasized. Narrated scenes of adjusting demonstrate the gentle, specific adjustments used for pregnant mothers and their infants.

Written and produced by Dr. Jeanne Ohm, Chiropractor

I don’t know if Dr. Jeanne ever made this available for downloading or watching online, if I here from her I’ll add a link here.

There was another video, and one featuring Bob Sottile, D.C. that may get posted online someday, will provide links if and when those are available.

All of You Out There Making a Difference

By Stew Bittman, D.C.

A few months ago I embarked on a monthly lecture series in the office, and later today will be installment #3 (watch for the tapes!). This one is entitled, “A life without fear” (thank you Fred Barge), and will focus on the application of chiropractic philosophy into one’s life. As I’m sitting here meditating on a rough outline for the talk, my mind keeps rehashing the same old things: the universe conspiring on our behalf, the greatest doctor in the world residing within us, the miracle of Innate guidance, getting out of the head and into the heart, Twinkies, 600 octillion things going on in the body in every second, and basically all the stuff I’ve been speaking and writing about over and over again for years. And yet underneath all that chatter, a phrase that I’ve heard Sigafoose utter many times keeps echoing thru the recesses of my consciousness: “it doesn’t make any difference.” Yes, perhaps the greatest lesson to learn in order to live a life without fear is simply that. It doesn’t make any difference. It’ll be a short talk today!

Indeed, as I go thru this life as consciously as possible, reading and writing and meditating and growing and learning, that phrase is probably the most important thing I’ve learned. And as I look back on the growth and evolution of my practice and my marriage and my self-awareness, maybe it’s the only thing I’ve really learned. Less and less seems to really make any difference. My brain still wants to fret and moan about the most ridiculous of inanities and insanities, and yet I have learned to laugh at it more and more. Hillary and I still occasionally deal with the same infantile issues as we did when we were 25 years younger, but we have learned to laugh about it. My mission has become more serious, my opportunities and challenges have multiplied geometrically, my life has become increasingly dedicated to service, and at the same time my sense of humor and peace and lightness has also grown, as I have come to realize that very few things are really important.

It’s hard to be afraid when you’re laughing. And now I chuckle at many things that used to make me cringe in fear. Things like: people’s opinion of me, numbers and statistics, missed appointments, rejection, failure, success, abandonment, relationships, lawyers, government, etc., etc., etc. I see now that I was mostly afraid of things not going the way I wanted them to, and that I spent an immeasurable amount of energy and focus and time attempting to force a round universe into the square peg of my idea of reality. I know all you control freaks can relate. I see, too, therefore, that what I used to call service to God and to others was really service to me and my expectations. And now, tho the dentist or a cop driving behind me will still bring up a little adrenaline release, most of the time I’m aware enough of my connection to Innate to realize I am taken care of, protected, and nurtured in enormous love. Most of time I have too much faith to be afraid. Most of the time I bask in the knowledge that I am inseparable from the things that are truly real. Things like truth, love, friendship, sharing one’s gifts and renouncing the fruit, wholeness, holiness, and Spirit. And as a chiropractor, I can help others to re-discover these things. That really does make a difference.

New Chiropractic Patient Orientation

By Sharon Gorman, Chiropractor

I just came home from the office. I did my New Patient Orientation tonight and I am flying. I usually don’t look forward to doing Orientation. I have done it hundreds and hundreds of times but by the time I’m done each week, I can’t believe I even had that thought earlier in the night. I come home flying.

I love having the opportunity to lay out the true benefits of chiropractic so that the patients can have the opportunity to change their lifestyle to include Chiropractic Care hopefully for their whole lifetime and for their whole family. Doing Orientation is a privilege of being a Chiropractor that I am not willing to give up.

The Chiropractic Principle is so simple and makes so much sense and we tend to make it so complicated. Doing the Orientation reminds me what I am all about. It keeps me excited about the – – – tic in chiropractic. Some people leave my orientation and never return to my office and I take that as a compliment. Surely I wouldn’t like it if it happened often but occasionally it is nice because it shows me that I am keeping chiropractic, chiropractic and not trying to mold it into something that is too easily palatable. Most people stay and refer but chiropractic is different and some people are not ready to make a decision that is not necessarily status quo. That is ok. I don’t want to confuse people into believing that chiropractic is another form of therapy for their symptoms. Don’t get me wrong, I accept them where they are at and don’t send them packing if they don’t see things the way that I do yet I need to tell them what I do and what I stand for because if I don’t I might forget who I am and turn into another therapist of sorts. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to tell them the truth.

Chiropractic Knowledge Is Power

By Dr. Jim Dubel

One of the points in my career that helped me to take a major step forward in my practice and personal life happened while reading one of B.J. Palmer’s Green Books. I have always heard most of the “on purpose” chiropractors like Dr. Sid Williams or Dr. Jim Sigafoose talking about the invaluable information B.J. Palmer had bestowed upon using his numerous writings. So, I began collecting and reading anything I could get my hands on that B.J. Palmer wrote. I find it amazing that B.J. is still 100 years ahead of his time in his philosophy and understanding of chiropractic.

In one of the volumes B.J. Palmer said “subluxation is the cause of all dis-ease”. This is the big idea! I imagine I struggled like so many of us for many years trying to believe and understand exactly what that meant. It seems so simple and yet so complex. We in chiropractic suffer from simplicity. Who really knows that the subluxation is the cause of all dis-ease, B.J. Palmer did and I suspect that the rest of us are working on it. Perhaps some chiropractors who do not know or only partially believe in the principle want to complicate our philosophy to hide the fact that they do not have the big idea!

The day that I accepted the chiropractic principle in full faith and began telling the chiropractic story without reservation was the day my life changed. By telling the truth to my patients and friends, not only did my practice grow, but I grew spiritually and emotionally. In the past, I worried what people thought of me and I was afraid to be thought of as different. I wanted to fit in like all the other “real” doctors. In essence, I was giving up and lying not only to myself but to all I came in contact with..

In B.J.’s Green Books I found strength. He never watered down the truth. He was not afraid too philosophize about life and about how chiropractic enhanced it. As BJ was fond of saying “keep on keeping on”, read and believe and then you get to know.

When, and if, it is possible for chiropractors to dispense with the junk and concentrate on chiropractic, he/she will have a power that is beyond understanding. If subluxation prevents innate from carrying on its normal functions, dis-ease occurs and well people get sick. If the subluxation is removed and innate is able to flow, health is restored. This can be accomplished anywhere, at any time, without communicating by language or considering external variables of people. This IS the big idea! It is a God-given service person-to-person.

Once we understand and can allow ourselves to tell the truth in an uninhibited way, we can break free of the bondage that has kept us captive and made us fearful of what other people might thing. The truth can never change. It is always the truth and will always remain the truth. By removing subluxations we are able to release life energy that controls, maintains, and re-creates every cell in the body. What an exciting thought… that the power is in our hands to restore health to the sick and give hope to the suffering who previously had none.

With the knowledge of what chiropractic is capable of accomplishing we are armed with an inexhaustible arsenal. No other Doctor from any health care profession has the ability to aid in the restoration of life. We need no other implements or concoctions to achieve the magnificent result of health. We need only knowledge of where the subluxation is, how to remove it, and most importantly, what is being removed. With this simple information and the art of adjustment we are able to unlock potential that has been pent up by subluxation.

Once you can understand and can explain the truth, your life and your practice will be enhanced. I have read and re-read all of B.J.’s Green Books and each time I re-read one I find a point that I have not gotten before. The same is true for attending philosophy sessions or meetings. Each time you hear a chiropractic philosophy speaker you take home a little bit greater understanding of what we have. I believe all of us can, and will, continue growing in our knowledge and understanding of the chiropractic principle by reading and listening to philosophy.

There is within each individual, one common intelligence, which conceives, develops, gives birth, produces and reproduces, performs life functions within each, in common, always alike, to all alike.

“Someday, people will learn that material things do not bring happiness and are of little use in making men and women creative and powerful. Then the scientists will turn their Laboratories over to the study of God and prayer and spiritual forces which, as yet, have hardly been scratched. When this day comes, the world will see more advancement in one generation that has in the last four.” — Dr. Charles Steinmetz.

If chiropractic works, it works every time without exception. If chiropractic does not work, then it has never worked and will never work. We know that it works 100 percent of the time, all the time. This is the truth! If even one person has received help from a chiropractic adjustment, then we have all the proof required.

In contrast, medicine guesses with each prescription and has changed many times in its approach toward health care. Over the years medicine has contradicted itself on almost every chemical cure it is administered. In all its years, it has not cured even one disease process.

Chiropractic in its entire life span of 108 years has never changed. The removal of vertebral subluxation, by hand only, to restore normal nerve flow from the brain above to the body below, remains the same. Chiropractic will never change! The truth cannot change! It is a law.

Better Late Than Never

by Sharon Gorman, D.C.

Well I don’t know if that is the greatest name for a Monday Morning Message but that pretty much sums it up. We are in the midst of Chiropractic Screening Season here in the North East and apparently all of my energy is being sopped up by new patients. I try to wait until the great spirit moves me to write these messages and sometimes it takes me longer than other times yet I don’t want to push out a message I want it to flow through me. Well I’m flowing again so here I go.

The other day in the practice we had a new patient. We have all had people like this I’m sure, especially from screenings. She came in talking about what she expected to get for nothing and that she wanted to make sure she was never going to owe us anything. We assured her that a deal is a deal and told her what she was entitled to. Before I even met her the CA’s pulled me aside to warn me about her attitude. I welcomed their warning. I always want to know as much as I can about someone before I take care of them. They were sucked into her negativity. They didn’t like anything about her already and they were actually making fun of her to me more than merely reporting about her attitude. They were convinced that we would never see her again and thought it was funny how stupid she sounded at the front desk.

I then met her. Turns out she is in terrific pain and she has been for over two years and has been everywhere. I can see the pain in her face. I felt sorry for her. She had such a harsh exterior and she was a wounded child. She then repeated her concern about the money and I went over our procedure and about how she would be expected to attend a new patient Orientation at which time I would discuss with her a care plan and a financial agreement. She then came out and asked me how much a visit cost. I was afraid she might get sticker shock since I had heard what she was saying and since she had told me she had been out of work since these symptoms had begun. To my amazement she said “No Problem.”

Monday night she was at Orientation and kept us overtime because she had to tell all the patients how she has had the first relief she had in years and told them who she was going to refer and telling them that they should be referring too. I remember before I went in to see her I had this thought flash, a cliché popped into my head. It was “see the God in everyone.” See the God in everyone.

Even if the patient I’ve been talking about turns out not to be a “good” patient I’m still glad I had this thought before I went into that room because she deserved me to give her everything. I had not filtered through the prejudices that sometimes cloud my connection with people.

See the God in everyone!

Perfect Subliminal Advertising

by Adam R. Tanase
(Tri-9 Student @ Logan College of Chiropractic)

It’s obvious that subliminal advertising is unethical and illegal. Unfortunately, this hasn’t stopped the incestuous relationship between drug companies and marketing agencies from dancing around the law, and bombarding us with ad after ad — offering “cures” to all our health problems, and even the ones we don’t have yet.

I’ve noticed another tactic lately, rearing its ugly head… One so deceptive and sly that not only is it totally legal, but perhaps even more effective than the seductiveness of it’s subliminal ancestry.

Perhaps you’ve heard it already. It would have been difficult not too, for this seemingly innocent Walgreen’s campaign has been on the air for quite some time now. The radio and television commercials all begin with a similar introduction. A soft and therapeutic voice facetiously tells the tale of “The town called Perfect.”

Utopian statements like “Silk only wishes it were as soft as your skin,” paint the picture of how wonderful life might be. The ads are loaded with mesmerizing ‘wouldn’t-it-be-great-if’ fantasies. Suddenly, the peaceful, airy voice dissolves and the speaker abruptly becomes more practical and realistic. He finishes with “Unfortunately you don’t live anywhere near Perfect, and that’s why there’s Walgreen’s.”

Without subtlety, in the most obvious way, they implant in listeners’ minds that ‘You’re not perfect. Come to us, we will complete you.’ Well if Walgreen’s wasn’t a huge pharmacy, strategically located practically everywhere you turn, it might not be so disgraceful. But it is, and it’s a real shame that such delusions are allowed on air.

I’ve got news for you… you *are* perfect. God created you in His image, and He fashioned you with all the necessary parts that you’ll ever need. You are complete and without flaw. What exists inside you cannot be bought off the shelf or picked up from behind the counter at Walgreen’s with a special prescription.

Dr. Rob Sinnott, LCP, demonstrated to us recently how medical doctors are the “ordinary doctors,” while Chiropractors are “extraordinary” doctors. Our job is to help the helpless; to put life back into the lifeless; and most importantly, to instill hope into the hopeless.

Ordinary doctors plant the seeds of fear and despair. They remove all hope. They ingrain in their patients thoughts of inadequacy, defectiveness, and deficiency.

It pains me to see that a lot of people actually believe this garbage.

It’s time to let the masses know that they *do* live in “Perfect,” and that they should stop feeding from the artificial, mechanistic, and tainted hand that is Modern Medicine.

We are all so BIG inside, with such tremendous living and healing potential. Do your patients know it? Do they know and appreciate the amazing miracle that they are? If they did… if YOU did… then nothing would seem impossible.

Become the extraordinary doctor that you are! Turn it on and show’em what they’re made of! @ 6:53 am | Article ID: 1068216829

Universal Intelligence is in all matter

by John Maher, D.C.

“A Universal Intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence. The expression of this intelligence through matter is the Chiropractic meaning of life.” (R.W. Stephensen DC PhC The Chiropractic Textbook 1927)

The term intelligence is defined as:

  • The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge. (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.)
  • Intelligence, term usually referring to a general mental capability to reason, solve problems, think abstractly, learn and understand new material, and profit from past experience. Intelligence can be measured by many different kinds of tasks. Likewise, this ability is expressed in many aspects of a person’s life. Intelligence draws on a variety of mental processes, including memory, learning, perception, decision-making, thinking, and reasoning. (2003 Microsoft Encarta)

If we look at the stars in the night sky are they organized in a reproducible pattern? Through this celestial composition, people have guided their journey upon this earth for thousands of years. Many historical references describe the coordinates of the night sky. These references include travelers, sailors, and even the three wisemen.

Each star may include as many planets or more than our solar system. Are each of these solar systems organized in a comprehensible reproducible pattern? So much so that we base our entire existence of time and space on the revolution of a single planet around one star. We live a finite existence in an infinite opportunity of possibilities.

What about the atomic building blocks of our world? Are the protons, neutrons, and electrons which make up the matter in our universe organized? The atomic chart has been defined by the organization of the atomic building blocks.

Einstein once said, “The scientist’s religious feeling takes the form of a rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law, which reveals an intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.” (Iain, P. Science, Theology and Einstein. New York: Oxford University Press, 1982, p57)

The currently accepted measurement of intelligence utilizes learning, perception, decision-making, thinking, and reasoning. When these measurements are applied to the organization presently observed in our universe, we find an immeasurable, infinite intelligence present. An intelligence large enough to organize all matter in the universe at all times maybe inconceivable to the educated finite mind of mankind. The truth remains scientifically self-evident that there exists a Universal Intelligence from the largest grouping of matter in our universe to the smallest atomic particle.

Each Chiropractor is made up of matter. A matter that contains certain Chiropractic Properties that must take certain Chiropractic Actions in order to maintain it in existence.

The expression of this Universal Intelligence through your matter is the Chiropractic Meaning of Life. Do you believe it is a coincidence that you are surrounded by subluxated people and have the goods to make a difference? Not when the Major Premise of Chiropractic is that “A Universal Intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence.” (R.W. Stephensen DC PhC The Chiropractic Textbook 1927)

There has never been a better time to be a Chiropractor. It is time for a New Begininning for a New Future. If not now, when? If not you, then who? The Mission of Chiropractic is to move the world …which will be done when it becomes known and is appreciated by masses for its true value. (p.161 Conflicts Clarify BJ Palmer 1951) Let us get moving! @ 7:01 pm | Article ID: 1068174106
