Parker College of Chiropractic announced it has achieved university status and will rebrand as Parker University. The Dallas-based school cites the name change as part of an expansion of current graduate degree offerings and programs with a focused long-term strategy of educating the world’s top health care and wellness practitioners for today’s changing health care landscape.

The viability of Chiropractic’s future is as vulnerable today as it was back in 1895. The Chiropractic profession has been in a bit of a legislative upheaval over the last few months. Most of the uproar has been initiated by the push for prescription rights in New Mexico.

History was made on Friday, September 18th in Davenport, Iowa – the birthplace and fountainhead of the Chiropractic profession. Doctors, chiropractic students, members of the Davenport City Council and the public were all on-hand to witness the first ever Chiropractic Awareness Day of Davenport, Iowa in the courtyard of the B.J. and Mabel Palmer Residence in Davenport, Iowa.

It’s a flu-for-all out there. War has been declared on the swine flu by governments around the world. The H1N1 swine flu virus is most notable for its tendency to be drearily lackluster, tame and below average as influenza goes, but on June 11, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) pushed the hyper-panic button for the swine flu anyway, triggering a global chain reaction of emergency medical preparations.

Just when the flu “formerly known as swine” was losing its headline luster for being too mild and ordinary a bug, the first global influenza pandemic in 41 years was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). On June 11, 2009 the WHO raised the pandemic warning to level 6, the highest possible alert.

The following is a planetc1.com chiropractic traffic report for the month of April, 2009. I’m sharing this information in hopes of educating chiropractors as to some important factors used when ranking websites (not just chiropractor sites, but all websites). The information provided is intended to serve as a guide for publicizing chiropractic traffic reports. Would a tax on sugary soft drinks result in improved health benefits for the people of New York? According to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the answer may be yes. According to New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Friedan and Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity and a professor at Yale University, a sugar tax would result in health benefits no matter how revenue from the taxing of soft drinks would be spent.

2008 November is the month the United States elected their 44th president, but that’s not the only event that took place during this historical autumn month. There were marathons (and even canceled marathons), parades, music awards, green car awards, devastating fires in the state of California, and numerous other events. We saw chiropractor income reports, chiropractors running marathons, questions on chiropractic practice, and other topics hitting the homepage of planetchiropractic.com. This post serves as a round up for the month of November 2008.

Sometimes it’s good to get outside the box of one’s own industry to discover what commonalities we may have with others. Developing a better understanding as to how others perceive your industry can go a long way in finding ways to provide better communications and services. A few weeks ago I came across a popular breast-feeding blog authored by a woman named Jennifer Laycock. While I was reading through some of the posts, I found myself thinking this was the type of blog I’d suggest visitors of Planet Chiropractic read. What I found most interesting though was that until I came across Jennifer’s blog, I had only known her as the Editor of a popular online guide to better understanding search engines.

Member organizations of the Chiropractic Coalition, including the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations (FSCO) and the World Chiropractic Alliance (WCA) will be meeting in Washington D.C. on Thursday, April 26th, to promote an agreed legislative agenda that includes Medicare improvements, better access to chiropractic care for military veterans, commissions for doctors of chiropractic as military officers, chiropractic inclusion in the TRICARE program for military dependents and retirees and other key initiatives.

The man known as the father of medicine is quoted as saying, “Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.” He also said, “It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.” That was Hippocrates, who walked upon the planet four or five hundred years before another famous healer named Jesus showed up. Jesus is said to have talked about healing forces of divine love inside every one of us that miraculously make us healthy. This kind of talk was apparently not popular with certain leaders of that era. I guess some things never change.

It is estimated that up to 98% of medical doctors treat ear infections with antibiotics immediately. It has long been common knowledge that there is widespread antibiotic drug prescriptive abuse throughout the United States and the rest of the world. During the past decade, the problem has gotten so bad that various public-health campaigns have been launched to educate both doctors and parents about the risks associated with prescribing antibiotics to children.

One of the hottest topics lately has been the movement of Physical Therapists into the area of “Spinal Manipulation.” In many states, there is a well organized, well funded push toward expansion of the PT’s scope of practice into an area that many DCs see as an encroachment into chiropractic.

How do you get a person to commit to something. This is a very important discussion when you are seeking to serve more people. We all know that it is impossible to change someone else, especially those of us who are married. A person walks into your office usually seeking relief from an aliment. The first commitment is usually easy at that point. They walked into your office seeking help. They already decided that there is a possibility that you can help them. The first emotion that we need to convey to them if we want them to connect to us and stick around is Hope. We are in the business that it’s continued existence is a testimonial to the “results” that people experience under our care. Understanding the implications of the definition of the Chiropractic Philosophy is very simple and easy to understand yet it is an understatement. The definition itself doesn’t motivate people. You do. They need to have confidence in the fact that you can help them and that you want to help them. Before a new patient ever leaves my office I always thank them for choosing me as their Chiropractor and I let them know that I Want To Be Their Chiropractor. That is telling them that not only do I think that I can help them, that in addition to that I Want To Help Them.
