Smile, Somebody’s Lookin’

By Super CA Lynne

I feel when people walk through the front door of our office their lives begin to change. The reason I can say that with great confidence is because I used to be one of those people walking through the front door and I now see miracles from the other side of the desk.

Before I was a Super CA, I came every Tuesday morning for my regular appointment. I was always excited to walk though the front door and see the smiling faces behind the desk. They always knew my name, asked how the past week had been and told me how glad they were to see me. A simple comment like, “wow that color looks great on you,” or “I see you got your hair done, it looks great,” really made a difference.

It left me smiling for the rest of the day. That 15-minute visit every week really made “me” feel like a somebody. We can change that person’s whole day by the way we react when they walk through the door. I have a patient that comes to see my smile every visit and considers the adjustment an added bonus. Wow, how good does that make me feel in return. Something as simple as a smile can change the course of a whole day.

It’s great when you ask people how their day was and they say, “Great, now that I’m here.” I always find it a fun challenge to see how long it takes me to get the new patient Mr. or Mrs.”Grumpy Face” to smile. People carry a lot of “crap” around with them and sometimes it takes a long time to remove the layers. Usually by the third week they are starting to joke back with me. Patients always ask why are we smiling in our office all the time. That’s where I got the idea to design T-shirts. Ask me why I’m smiling all the time… “I’m a chiropractic assistant, and I’m changing the world, one person at a time.”

We are changing the world, one person at a time, one adjustment at a time. And how could I not be smiling all the time I’m under chiropractic care and “LOOK WHAT I GET TO DO EVERY DAY! I am very lucky to be able to work every day with a very positive influence, Dr. Darrell Dailey (always smiling & in a great mood) and we have fun everyday and the patients see that and want to be a part of it. It’s like, hey I want to keep getting adjusted and get my power turned on and be happy all the time too…

We had a new patient start that had been referred by one of our wellness patients, and she commented that we were weird. When our wellness patient asked her what she meant, she said, “they are always so happy all the time, something must be wrong with them.” Society is used to medical offices and yes unfortunately chiropractic offices with miserable people behind the front desk, or that little hole in the wall with the tinted glass. They are not accustomed to a bright cheery smile and people who genuinely care about how their day really went.

I started an experiment about 3 years ago. I stopped asking people “how they are”, usually I say how was your day, great too see you, etc. I found that when people ask how you are, and they don’t even wait for your response and then they go right on telling you how they are, and you didn’t even ask, and they didn’t even realize that you didn’t ask. How’s that for a programmed response (are we robots or what?). After they come out of the adjustment room it’s better to ask, “How are you now?”, or state “Power’s On!”

Let people know that you understand their pain, but don’t dwell on their pain. If you have had a personal experience with pain, tell them about it and how your life has changed since being under chiropractic care (of course as a CA you are under chiropractic care, aren’t you?) Let them know that you have been there and that they too will be better. Just have fun every day and you will see it reflected in your patients. We are changing lives Super CA’s, the time has come for you to realize it.
