According to an article distributed on Cox News Service, some pediatricians in Canada suggest that Winnie the Pooh should be taking drugs to control his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

An imaginary bear taking a mind altering medication for a condition, that some would also call imaginary? The condition being ADHD, how fitting.

The article headline reads “Ritalin Faces Competition As More ADHD Children Are Diagnosed.”

It looks as though there will be lots of new drugs on the market to treat ADHD. The article mentions Concerta, a time release type of Ritalin, recently approved by the FDA. The drugs reported benefit is that it lasts longer than Ritalin and kids won’t be “embarrassed to take their medication at school.” (That’s if they’re not selling it in the schoolyard.)

Another drug company, according to the article, is planning to release a skin patch that will deliver the active ingredient in Ritalin directly into the bloodstream. Other drugs similar to Ritalin that are on the market include Adderall, a kind of long-lasting Ritalin with an added amphetamine. The drug reportedly, can be addictive.

The article clearly states that the potential market for treating conditions such as ADHD cannot be ignored.

While drug companies are looking for more ways to get kids to take more drugs, and pediatricians are looking for more ways to treat ADHD, parents are beginning to ask whether their children need to be taking these drugs in the first place. Perhaps there’s a better way. Perhaps there’s a healthier way. Find out, before you put your kid on drugs.
