Less Drugs, Less Death and Doctors

Drugs, death and doctors. That's what the news feed link for ABC's health news read. While those are rather strong terms designed to get the users attention, it tells us a bit about America's current attitude towards the medical profession.

Drugs, death and doctors. That’s what the news feed link for ABC’s health news read. While those are rather strong terms designed to get the users attention, it tells us a bit about America’s current attitude towards the medical profession.

According to the ABC News report, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has “cast doubts” on medical doctors when it comes to warning patients about the side effects of the drugs they are prescribing.

According to the article, one by one, prescription drugs are being pulled from the market for “killing or injuring Americans.” In many of the cases, the injuries or deaths were the result of doctors ignoring safety warnings or prescribing the drugs to the wrong patients.

The article states that a “bigger question,” is if a patient should be taking a new medication unless it’s been sold for more than a year? That question is asked since the really bad side effects are commonly spotted in the drugs first year on the market. The FDA, according to the article, urges consumers to be cautious of new medication use.

The article reports that eleven popular prescription drugs have been pulled from the market since 1997, due to their causal relationship with death or serious injuries.

So who is to blame? Is it the patients? Is it the FDA? Is it the doctors? That all depends on who you ask. Some say that the FDA is allowing the release of drugs onto U.S. markets much too quickly. Others say that medical doctors largely ignore or never read warning labels on the bottles of pills and potions they prescribe.

So what is the solution? Issue more warnings? According to the article, warnings don’t work. Two examples given were warnings made on the drugs Propulsid and Rezulin. Both of these prescription drugs were found to be deadly for many.

While this may sound silly, commonsensical, or just glaringly obvious, those that do not take drugs will not find themselves at risk of suffering from the side effects of drugs. And while you may think that “everyone” takes prescription or over-the-counter drugs for one condition or the other, that is just not the case.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out how these “drug-free” people live? How well do their bodies function? And just how is it that they can stay so healthy in a world of so many sick and unhealthy?

While never taking a drug may not be possible for you, significantly decreasing the amount of drugs you take or the instances in which you take them, should be a good start. And a good start begins with a first step.

A path to better health and wellness for you and yours.
