I receive some interesting invitations to numerous conferences that are not related to the field of chiropractic, at least not directly. I was going through my mail and noticed I was invited to attend a November Hysterectomy Conference at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena. The conference was being put on by the HERS Foundation, which was established in 1982 to meet the need and demand for information and services concerning hysterectomy and castration.
I didn’t get to attend the conference as it was held last weekend and I was at BarCamp. It did look rather interesting and along with the information I was sent about the conference there were some statistics related to hysterectomy surgeries. According to the information I was sent, an ongoing survey that began in 1991 has found that 99.7% of women had reported they were not informed of the functions of the female organs or the consequences of their removal and respondents said they would not have proceeded with hysterectomy surgery had the information been provided to them.
There was another statistic that suggested that among 622,000 hysterectomies performed on average in the United States over the past 10 years, only around 2% were life-saving. According to the information I received, of the women that were counseled by HERS, 98% of those who were told they needed a hysterectomy discovered that in fact they did not. The information reminded me of an article related to estrogen and hormones by chiropractor Madeline Behrendt.
I did a bit of online research, and it appears the HERS Foundation is located in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania and they do have a web site, as well as a blog. Visit either of their online destinations for more information.
