UPDATE: Four Israeli deaths have now been reported after flu vaccine shots were given. Health officials have found no apparent connection between the deaths.
The Health Ministry in Israel has ordered all clinics to halt administration of the flu vaccine after 3 people died, all within days of being injected with the same flu vaccine.
An investigation has been launched to discover what may have caused the deaths but at this point there is no more information available.
Doctors in the area have been contacted and the manufacturer of the vaccine has been notified.
Until recently, there were two major manufacturers of flu vaccines in the world, Novartis and Chiron. In April, Novartis acquired Chiron, a California maker of flu vaccines and other biopharmaceuticals. According to the financial website thestreet.com, Novartis is expecting to achieve another year of record sales and earnings.
On the business side of flu vaccine manufacturing, some experts believe Chiron saw an opportunity to make money as other companies got out of the flu vaccine making market from 2000 – 2004. Today, the market for flu vaccine is massive and only continues to grow. In 2004 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) began recommending universal flu vaccination for all children 6 months to 23 months old, as well as vaccination for the elderly and chronically ill. Some experts feel it is only a matter of time before the CDC advises every American (~ 300,000,000 people) to get a flu shot each year.
