Chiropractic Fun in Southern California Sun

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Whether it be getting adjusted to achieve optimal performance, or getting adjusted to recover from stresses and strains put on the body, chiropractic is the way to go for summer sports. As a chiropractor practicing in a beach community, I see a fair share of sun related summer activities, which gets people on adjusting tables for proper spine alignment. This past weekend was no exception, as Southern California chiropractors were hands-on to provide adjustments for amateur and professional men’s and women’s volleyball players at the Corona Light Wide Open event in Hermosa Beach, California.

Although the sand was hot, the two day event was a cool place to be. Chiropractors from as far as the Antelope Valley participated in providing chiropractic care and consultations to participants. Competitive play began early Saturday morning, and many participating were getting their spines checked, before hitting the sand for the two-day competition. Dr. Suzanne Frye of Lancaster California was one of the chiropractors that assisted players throughout the weekend. “An optimally functioning nervous system beats post performance injury rehab any day” was how Dr. Frye was explaining the benefits of sports related chiropractic care.

While providing care in the sand has its drawbacks (most of the players are covered in sunblock), none of the chiropractors had complaints about the beach breeze, meals provided by sponsors, and opportunities to help athletes be functioning at their very best, for a sport so many of them are incredibly passionate about. I’ve been at summer events throughout Los Angeles, Venice Beach, Orange County and Malibu, and this one had quite a participant and attendee turnout. It reminded me of the core tour days held in Southern California beach cities.

Mid August marks a time when summer tournaments and competitions are nearing their peak (not just for beach volleyball). For many, summer is almost gone, and school goes back in session within the next two weeks. Quite a few volleyball players are also coaches at California colleges and high schools, so players are eager to put their best performances forward, before the fall school season begins. Most of those I know in Venice and Santa Monica continue to play on the beach all year long. While performance is primary, shoulders get jacked, low backs lockup in spasm, and the ice inside coolers gets used for ankle sprains as well as keeping drinks chilled.

Whether the summertime event be a PGA championship, a BMX dirt event, or a beer sponsored sun soaked volleyball tournament, the hands-on job of chiropractors is never done. Enjoy your summer and don’t forget to get your spine checked by your local chiropractor! @ 6:43 pm | Article ID: 1313977435
