Giving a hug after every adjustment

By Stew Bittman, D.C.

I hug basically every folk that I adjust. There, I admit it. I can’t help it, tho. It has become a habit. A wonderful and important part of every folk’s visit. Maybe more important than even I imagine. And it seems as natural as a flowing river: adjustment and hug, adjustment and hug. It even sounds good. Like an old dance team. Well, this is one habit that I don’t have to swear off in a New Year’s resolution, anyway.

Nearly everyone gets hugs from my staff, too. People wait for them, sometimes standing patiently in the background after their adjustment looking like anxious puppies while things are happening at the front desk. Now, I am aware that some might not judge this type of behavior to be professional. And I suppose I would be remiss if I failed to mention that we do ask people if it’s OK first. But I don’t feel the least bit guilty. Usually, it is my folk that initiates the hug. Especially the kids, which tells me it’s definitely OK. To me, the adjustment is, more than anything, an act of love. It is, especially when I am fully present, and delivering it with no strings attached, a very intimate thing. Not on a personality or sexual level (those of you who’s minds are in the gutter), but on an Innate to Innate level. For me, a hug sort of closes the deal. And besides all that stuff, something happened today that reminded me, once again, of how beautiful it is to have that kind of relationship with my folks.

I’ve been checking Don for 8 or 9 years, at least once a week. Nearly every time he has come in, Tasha has been with him. They were inseparable. Don had friends, but Tasha was his life. They were the only couple, to my recollection, that smooched while one was being adjusted. Today, Don came in alone. Yesterday he had Tasha, his Labrador Retriever, put down. Tasha loved coming in. I grew to love her, too, even tho she had some of those less desirable dog things, like ultra bad breath, and the wonderful habit of scooting her behind across my just cleaned carpet. She loved her adjustments; maybe almost as much as she loved the treat she got out front afterward. Don came in today, sobbed like a baby with his head on my shoulder, and told me how Tasha would start jumping up and down every time they came, as soon as they turned into the Safe Haven parking lot. Even in her last few visits, when she had to be carried in. I hugged Don today after his adjustment, just as I always have, and always will. @ 10:38 am | Article ID: 1075315128

No Excuse For Irresponsibility

By Sharon Gorman, D.C.

Dr. Sharon GormanGive me a job that I know that I can do or at least think that I have a shot at being able to do and get out of my way and let me get to work. After a while I figured out that there isn’t a whole heck of a lot of things that I would like to do that I can’t get done especially after I learned the fine art of delegating and empowering so that I can rally a team when necessary. So many people don’t know they can do it. They don’t believe it so there is no way that they can achieve it. Give me a ball and I’ll run with it. I’m never happier in life then when I ‘m running with the ball. I pray for opportunities to serve and opportunities to make a difference. I don’t think that you are much different then me. So many of us hold back in fear that we might give and that we won’t get back from life what we give in return. That is impossible for me. The feeling that I get while giving alone is worth the giving. I would have to break one of the rules of the universe in order to not get back what I give out. Now that is no excuse for irresponsibility especially when it come to my chiropractic practice. I am responsible that all the i’s get dotted and all the t’s get crossed and that my office systems are getting employed by the people that work on my team. In other words I’ve got to make sure I get paid for what I do and for my service. I don’t think that there is anything holy about being poor if I am serving. I believe that if you don’t arrange (that is part of the service you have to do in your practice) for the exchange to occur with your patients then you are robbing them the opportunity to be in even exchange with you and that doesn’t serve them or serve you either. If you break that law of exchange eventually they will quit coming to you or you will quit wanting to be their Chiropractor or even to bring that to the whole practice, you will get tired of serving if you are out of proper exchange.

When it comes to organization or volunteer work the most important thing is that you get acknowledged and encouraged and that you learn to respect and acknowledge the others involved too. You might not agree with others especially when it comes to politics but you have got to respect them. You have to rise above seeing them as the victimizer and your group as the victims. That doesn’t work. You have to take on the situation as a challenge. You have just got to out work them. Your team needs to come together and become part of the system if you want to change it.

This work is incredibly rewarding. As Chiropractors it is essential that we step up. If we step up before there is a crisis then maybe we wouldn’t have so many crisis. We need to act more and re-act less. If we can’t spend a lot of time for some reason then we should spend a little time. Some energy should be spent in this direction. I feel it is a necessity for our survival or the survival of any industry such as ours. If nothing else then pay dues. Support your alma mater, your state chiropractic association, your national chiropractors association. If you can’t afford to then you have to look at your practice or your priorities. If you practice isn’t such that you can afford it then you need to look at that. It would probably do you good hanging out with the people who are out there serving. Those people who have time to serve their profession very often are the same workers who have successful practices. I always like the expression, “If you want something done then give it to someone busy to do.” My life is not poorer because I serve in my profession, it is bigger and richer. True I have to guard myself from not creating boundaries so that I can have balance in my life. That is another challenge that I get to master as a result of wanting to get out and make a difference. The rewards are incredible. I have learned so much it has been like a training experience. I have learned to have direction. I have learned to communicate clearly and to make sure the words that come out of my mouth are not words that I will end up having to eat. I have become more efficient at delegating and have created a solid team in my office so that when I am not there my office runs like a fined tuned machine. I have jumped over so many hurdles in my personality because I don’t have time or energy to mess with them. My old stuff has gotten in my way and it gets boring dealing with the same junk over and over. I see the significance of getting out of my own way to get a job done. I see where my work is significant and I see my life as significant. I am not bored doing the same stuff the same way all of the time. Life is always challenging me. I win some, I lose some. I’m in the game.

People ask me “How do you take time away from your family?” The truth is that if they weren’t taken care of I couldn’t do anything else. They are first. I’m in the office three days a week, gone about a weekend a month and otherwise I’m all theirs. I have three daughters and don’t forget my son, how can you forget him. My sense of purpose and confidence serves as such a role model for them. They see what I am accomplishing in my life and how happy I am with my sense of purpose and they are creating that in their lives too. They are proud of mom and I am a role model for them. I realize the gift that they are and I appreciate the time that we are together and they appreciate me. They know that I am not “stuck” with them but rather I choose to be with them. Can’t end this paragraph until I mention Ron. He serves as much as me just in a different way. He has sacrificed his career for now in order to make our home life his career. See there are many different ways of serving. He is serving our family. As long as he is busy he is happy. I’ve learned a lot from him. So I need to end this Monday Morning Message so that I can jump back into life and make a difference in the world and hopefully spread some love along the way.

Love and appreciate you, Sharon @ 5:42 pm | Article ID: 1075254160

Fellow Chiropractic Caretakers of the Principle

By Stew Bittman, D.C.

Since the start of 2004, we’ve already had 4 babies born in the practice, and there are at least 9 more ready to come aboard in the next couple of months (it snowed a lot last April and May!). I was blessed to check 3 of the 4 within the first 24 hours of their arrival, even tho they were all hospital births. I think the maternity nurses are beginning to wonder how many nieces and nephews I could possibly have!

No matter how many times I’ve checked newborns, the beauty and power of the experience still consistently blows me away. When I hold the baby and look into their eyes, I get the firm realization that I am looking at God. Perfection. Love. Innate. I realize that all the wisdom and power in the universe is looking back at me. I realize that there may never be another moment in this person’s life when they express that power and wisdom in such an undiluted and unfiltered way. At the same time, I realize that with this first adjustment, and hopefully a lifetime of adjustments, the possibility exists that God can continue to manifest thru this being without interference. And I am at once filled with hope for the world, imagining that this is the child that will grow up to be another Jesus, or Gandhi, or Buddha. Why not?

The future has yet to be created. And the things we think, feel, say, and do in each moment will be the blueprint for that creation. With each adjustment, whether it is for a newborn or a 95 year-old or a Schnauzer or a gecko, I work toward having my thots, my feelings, my words, and my actions all become one and the same: love. I exist to help all beings that come into my presence grow into their highest and grandest visions. I see this person (or whatever) as already perfect, already whole, and already holy. I know that their gift is something the world is dying to receive, and that their song is something the world is dying to hear. And I understand that he or she is a light unto this world, which I have been privileged enuf to ignite. It’s funny. When I adjust from that space, I never hear, “it still hurts over here, doctor.” All I get is God looking back at me, as well as the manifestation of my dreams. @ 10:27 am | Article ID: 1075141636

New Chiropractic Practitioners Guide

By Sharon Gorman, D.C.

How do you get the patients through the door after you open the door? That is the question. I could write volumes on it yet here are some quick ideas to get you started.

The Old Fashion Way
Make believe you are running for office. Shake hands, HAND OUT CARDS. Go where people are and meet and introduce yourself. Not everyone knows that they need a Chiropractor so the more people you meet the more of a pool of future patients you create. Get involved. If you have time become a volunteer. Make sure you don’t get too involved and take your focus off of your practice. Remember whatever you focus on will grow.

Georgia Chiropractor Sharon Gorman

Hand Out A Gift
I got this idea from a local bakery. They sent someone walking around town giving them a nicely wrapped plate of cookies to all the local merchants. My variation. We ordered mints and on the wrappers we put our phone number and wrote Adjust-mints on the wrapper. (There is actually a company that sells them). We bought plastic bowls and filled the bowl, wrapped it in pretty cellophane and a ribbon and gave the merchants free Adjust-mints. We are looking for any reason to get out and meet people.

Grand Opening Party
The more noise you can make the better. We had a local band come and play. We had a barbecue going and had rented a tent with chairs and tables. I had another Chiropractor as my guest speaker and advertised that too. We even had a watermelon eating contest. I handed out literally 100’s of flyers. I gave one to everyone I came into contact with.

Very costly, I got one bit of advise about advertising. Don’t bother unless you use your picture or your staff’s picture or your families picture. You want to connect with them. A picture is worth a thousand words.

When I first opened my practice (almost 20 years ago), I found advertising to be effective. Now I find the best way to get new patients is to get out and meet them. Our best screening each year is at the local country fair. We have screened everywhere from health fairs to business expo’s to malls to flea markets. We have also in more recent years been welcomed at running races and walk-a-thons. In this electronic era we live in nothing touches people like someone who touches people. A handshake or a kind word goes a long, long way.

Monthly Calendars
Each month we create a calendar on our computer. We put our hours on there and note if there will be any change. We put on any in office events that are going on. We mention any activities that we are participating in outside of the office. It keeps the patients connected. We send it out to our e-mail list and hand it out over the counter. We don’t mail it at all. On the back of the calendar we write a short newsletter. I write a short article and we put a blurb about anything special going on in the office, a new baby born, an in office contest or even a Thank You list for bringing in a Holiday gift etc. On this and all of your correspondences with the patients make sure you include your name, phone numbers, e-mail address and web site address. I know this sounds like common sense but you can’t believe how many times these things are forgotten.

This has become my favorite way to communicate with the patients. I usually keep the mails very short and limit them to about 2 a month. I remind patients when I will be closed. I remind them of an Open House. I stay connected. I started with my active patients and I never take anyone off unless they ask to be removed and that has only happened 1 time. Ask them to check out your web site and encourage them to ask their friends to do the same.

Outside Talks
My best advise about getting into places to do talks or screenings for that matter is to utilize your best resource. Talk to your current patients or if you are just starting then talk to anyone. Ask them to help you out. Ask them what clubs, organizations or Church groups that they belong to. Ask them if they can bring you to a meeting or if you can possibly come to speak. What do they say, “it’s not what you know, it is who you know.” Make it your business to know people. Once they like you and like what you are doing then put them on your practice building team. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most people will be flattered that you respect their opinion and will welcome the opportunity to help you.

Make The Connection
Remember eye contact. People connect to you a lot faster when they are talking then when they are listening. Become a good listener. There are two ways to build any kind of business. You can build from attraction or promotion. Some promotions were listed above. Become attractive. People will want to be around you when you want to be around yourself. People will also want to be around you if you got what they want. Be an example. Let them feel that spark inside of you. Be super friendly, be super loving. Step out of your comfort zone and be there to supply their needs. Always remember that we are in a service business. Serve. One other note. Don’t waste any time wondering why things aren’t necessarily turning out exactly the way you think they should. You know what I’ve heard said: “Expectations are pre-meditated resentments.” Be too busy serving to get stuck in expectations. The time you spend “worrying” takes away the time and energy you can be using on growing your practice.

Don’t Get Bored
I shared a few ideas with you today but I’ll tell you now that 6 months from now I will be using some different ideas. If I believe that some PR idea I have will work then it usually will. If I don’t think it will work then it definitely won’t. Even the best ideas I’ve had have worn thin after a while. Sometimes I won’t do something anymore and then after a while it sounds like a great idea again and then it works again. I have a planning session with my staff every three months and we make out a plan that way the practice’s growth is less dependent on my mood. If it is already decided and planned then the chances of me following through are much greater. By bringing my staff into these planning sessions then I am creating a team with my staff. We create a common vision and plan. That works.

Stay Around The Winners
If you want to be more successful then hang out with people who are more successful than you. It is crucial that you create a support system of people who are doing what you are doing. The most important part of staying successful is having people in your life that are also committed to being successful. Come join us at the CHIROPRACTIC FELLOWSHIP OF PENNSYLVANIA. Chiropractic in the News

A glimpse at some of todays chiropractic stories worldwide…

Marco Island, Florida
Hundreds of women are choosing home birth in the state of Florida is a welcome alternative to giving birth in a busy hospital setting.

From the article… “I did a lot of research on my own. I didn’t just rely on the birth classes everyone takes,” said Kathy.
“I had regular chiropractic adjustments throughout my pregnancy,” explained Kathy, who read that studies show there is a 50 to 60 percent shorter labor with regular adjustments.

Townsville, Australia
Chiropractor discovers a one dollar coin in throat of a ten year old girl.

From the article… A Townsville girl who has been living with a $1 coin in her throat for more than six years is relieved to be finally rid of the small change which has caused her and her family so much grief. Dr Evette Christopoulos, of Back2health Chiropractic, said after examining Onnalisa she sent her for X-rays because her overall range of motion was limited and she was under-developed for her age. “On the X-rays we found a $1 coin sitting in her throat,” Dr Christopoulos said.

Interference to the body, whether it be from subluxation or swallowed coins, can have dramatic effects.

Toronto, Canada
The College of Chiropractors of Ontario is planning to ban all Canadian chiropractors from advising patients on vaccinations.

You’ve got to hand it to the chiropractors in Canada that stand up and voice their opinions. The Canadian medical establishment and some of the political chiropractic groups in Canada appear to be hell bent on oppression, meddling, and persecution of some fine doctors.

I’ve been staying away from these trash types of articles, the press has been full of them for years. Just thot it was time to take a look at what our Canadian brothers and sisters are going to endure next.

In my opinion, the only reason there is so much trash talk in Canada is due to great many dedicated, disciplined, loving, serving DCs there are in such country.

Heres a quote (not from the article) Samuel Adams… The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men.

Top Ten Strategies For Mediocrity

By Dr. Fred Schofield

1. Taking Action Without Planning
When it comes to your future, impulsiveness is the Mother of Regret. Considerable thought must be given to the ends as well as the means of your strategy.

Dr. Fred Schofield of Mochihchu

2. Planning Without Taking Action
Endless preparation is worse than action without planning. Accept that practice is a work in progress. You will always have questions. Plan and Launch the ATTACK!

3. Unrealistic Expectations
Practice is a process not an event. ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY. Exercise wisdom and learn to be PRESENT. Remember most things in practice take longer and cost more than the best-laid plans anticipate.

4. Reasons “Why” are Unclear
Why you want to achieve a goal is more important than the goal itself. Before taking action on anything it is imperative that you ask yourself this key question: “Why do I want to achieve this? What is my objective?”

5. Denial of Reality
It’s far easier to deny reality than it is to accept it. And far too many Doctors take the easy way out. Success is information dependent, when we deny reality, we devalue the integrity of our information and enter into Confusion.

6. Conflicting THOTS
When we have not clarified OUR reasons Why or defined what Success means to us, we operate on someone else’s definition. Thots and Feelings must be in Synchronicity.

7. Diffusion of Energy
Attempting to do too much, overwhelm is a recipe for mediocrity. Rather than doing an excellent job at a few chosen goals we dissipate our energies and diffuse what matters most; Energy.

8. Focus
Success demands Focus. It is the hallmark of all truly great practices. Your ability to focus is the key determinant of your success.

9. Doing it all Alone
Nobody goes through life alone, we all need the coaching. Put your pride aside and learn to ask for help when you need it. Learn and share knowledge for your own success.

10. Fear of SUCCESS
Fear of SUCCESS is The “BIG Daddy” of them all. Far too many dreams have suffocated and died because of it. Fear resides where knowledge is lacking; the more you know about anything the less intimidation you feel. Replace your fears with knowledge and watch your performance EXPAND.

Six Leading Presidential Candidates Endorse Chiropractic

Source: American Chiropractic Association

With just one week remaining before the beginning of the Iowa caucuses, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has secured official statements on chiropractic care from each of the six leading Democratic presidential candidates. ACA secured these statements through close cooperative efforts with the Iowa Chiropractic Society and politically active doctors of chiropractic across the country.

“Though they may often disagree on other issues, the leading presidential candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination appear to completely agree on the value and benefits of chiropractic care,” said ACA President Donald Krippendorf, DC. “The ACA is encouraged by this enthusiastic support and more determined than ever to ensure that it is maintained by our elected leaders long after Election Day.”

Governor Howard Dean, Congressman Dick Gephardt, Senator John Kerry, Senator John Edwards, General Wesley Clark and Senator Joe Lieberman round out the list of candidates who have submitted statements. To view these statements, visit:

The ACA, the largest national organization representing doctors of chiropractic, has taken an active role in the months leading up to the January 19, 2004 Iowa precinct caucuses in evaluating the health care policy positions of each of the announced presidential contenders. This effort has included meetings with major candidates and senior campaign officials, and the use of ACA’s specially designed issues questionnaire.

“The candidates are recognizing the political clout of Iowa’s chiropractic constituency,” said F. Dow Bates, DC, ACA Iowa Delegate. “The numbers speak for themselves. Iowa is home to thousands of doctors of chiropractic and chiropractic assistants, tens of thousands of chiropractic patients and the largest chiropractic college in the world. The road to victory in the Iowa caucuses goes straight through the offices of the state’s doctors of chiropractic.”

Providing additional outreach were Keith Overland, DC, ACA Connecticut delegate, who serves as a health care policy adviser to the Lieberman campaign, and Dan Redwood, DC, of Virginia, who helped secure General Clark’s statement. @ 10:29 am | Article ID: 1074277746

Blessed with Chiropractic Care

By Super CA Jackie Pepe-Tardalo
Chiropractic Patient Diana

I started Chiropractic care at Dr. Mike’s office in July, 2002. At that time, I had many health concerns and hoped that Chiropractic would help me. My cousin Denise was forever telling me how Chiropractic changed her and her family’s life. Denise planted the seed, and then Jackie educated me tremendously on how I would benefit from Chiropractic care. At that point, I knew it was time to meet Dr. Mike. When I entered his office, I already knew that he would help me.

In June 2002, at the age of 20, I was diagnosed with Endometriosis. Since I was 13 years old, I had pain in my stomach and right leg and had loss of appetite. Two weeks after I started care, I was already scheduled for a laparoscopy to remove the Endometriosis which was spread throughout my abdomen and behind my colon. I also suffered from migraine headaches, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome (“IBS”) and chronic fatigue. Before I was led to Chiropractic care, my health was on a steady decline.

Dr. Mike and Dr. Bob explained to me the importance of keeping my care schedule. At this time, I was not working. I drove from Howard Beach 4 times a week for my adjustments until I was advised that my care schedule could be reduced.

Soon after I started getting adjusted, my headaches disappeared, and my allergies didn’t bother me anymore. My IBS has greatly improved, my appetite is back and so is my high energy level. At this time, I do not have anymore pain in my stomach or right leg. When I returned to the specialist for my first follow-up visit, I felt blessed when he told me the Endometriosis was very minimal. He was very surprised at my results. I informed him that I chose Chiropractic as my primary health care method. He supported my decision to keep getting adjusted. He also told me that Endometriosis normally returns within 6 months. I am happy to report that I have been clean for more than a year. My specialist was amazed and very pleased. It was nice to have someone in the medical field support my decision.

I have returned to work and my job requires much responsibility. Although I work late many nights, I manage to arrive home in Howard Beach, and then drive to get adjusted. Chiropractic care became my health priority and a way of life for me.

I am thankful that I am not filling my body with antibiotics anymore which hurt my immune system. Chiropractic care is wonderful! It’s a great feeling to know that my body is now functioning at 100% rather than 50% which it used to be. I know in my heart of hearts that I don’t have Endometriosis anymore because I am well adjusted!

I am very blessed that I have been led to Chiropractic care by Denise and Jackie. I trusted them when they explained to me how Chiropractic would change my life. Dr. Mike and Dr. Bob are wonderful Chiropractors! I love the care which I receive from them. They are warm, caring and effective. They make a great team! I wish there were more Chiropractors like them around. This world would be a much healthier place. @ 10:23 am | Article ID: 1074277431

Take a Stand on Chiropractic

Lou Corleto, D.C., PhC (hon)

Do you want Chiropractic to “take off,” your practice to “take off?” Then we need to start thinking, speaking and acting as though they have and they will. Of course doing this will separate you from many people including some chiropractors. They will call you crazy. They will say you are wrong. They will eventually have enough of you, and they will attempt to crucify you.

They will do this not because they think we are living in a world of our own illusions, but because, sooner or later, others will become attracted to your truth–and the promises it holds for them.

Here is where our fellow “men” will inter-fear, for here is where what we do will begin to threaten them. Our simple truth, simply lived, will offer more beauty, more comfort, more peace, more joy, and more love of self and others than anything they could contrive.

So be ready, peaceful warriors. You will be vilified and called names, and deserted, and finally they will accuse you, try us, and condemn you–all in their own ways–from the moment you accept and adopt your calling; to remove subluxations and share the knowledge of vitalistic chiropractic philosophy to the world with love.

Why then do it?

Because we are no longer concerned with the acceptance or approval of the world. We are no longer satisfied with what that has brought us. We are no longer pleased with what it has given others. We want the suffering to stop, the illusion to end. We have had enough of this world as it presently is.

We know the medical profession holds back “cures,” refuses to approve alternative medicines and procedures (of which we are NOT) because they threaten the very structure of the “healing” profession. How about the governments of the world who do not want to end world hunger? No doctor wants to deny a “cure.” No countryman wants to see his people die. No individual doctor, that’s true. No particular countryman, that’s right. But doctoring and politicking have become institutionalized, and it’s the institutions that fight these things, sometimes very subtly, sometimes even unwittingly, but inevitably…because to those institutions it’s a matter of survival.

A very obvious example, if the medical profession were to admit what we do “might” provide some healing, this would tear at the very fabric of the institution as it has structured itself.

This is not malevolent, yet it is insidious. The profession doesn’t do this because it is evil. It does it because it is scared. All attack is a call for help.

Know it is time for a reality check within our own backyard. Our profession is becoming an institution. An institution because the “powers” that be are trying to eliminate the very core of our “profession”. They want to get rid of our philosophy, replace adjustment with manipulation and subluxation with manipulative lesion. The CCE has altered the educational requirements for anyone wanting to receive a “ChiropracTIC” education to the degree that he/she is not even clear as to what chiropractic is upon graduation. They spend more time learning to diagnose and treat medical conditions than they do in locating and correcting subluxations. After all, is this not our sole purpose. Because of this incongruence they end up harming two professions.

There are students in various schools (I don’t need to name) who are being condemned, accused and ridiculed for standing up for Chiropractics’ principles, for using “bad” words like adjustments and subluxation. And the worst of all, innate intelligence.

The time to take a stand and act is NOW. People, the public, are literally starving for what we have to give. Let’s serve it to them. But let’s do so unadulterated. Remember we have been given a sacred trust. Are we guarding it well?

Keep setting them free!!! @ 6:35 pm | Article ID: 1074220552

Healing Potential of a Skillfully Delivered Spinal Adjustment

By Sid Mouk, D.C.

We all know the Healing potential of a skillfully delivered spinal adjustment given at the right time in the right place. But have even we in subluxation-based Chiropractic actually been selling this profession short? We know the power of the spinal adjustment when it comes to healing dis-ease and disease conditions in the human body, but is it also possible that this same spinal adjustment can actually change human behavior?

Everything that occurs in the human body is controlled by and through the nervous system so the potential is certainly there. Dr. Greg Cheatwood told the story of a man who came to him suffering with a chronic low back problem who, after 3 weeks of spinal adjustments, was feeling much improved. Then his wife came in with him one day and pulled Greg aside. She asked him, “What have you done to my husband? He’s not only feeling much better but he no longer hollers at the children and he doesn’t hit me any more!”. As his spine improved, his behavior improved. Was it just because he was no longer in constant pain? Possibly, but I think not.

I feel there is more to this than many of us in this field are seeing and that it could enormously expand the potential of Chiropractic to include the correction of aberrant human behavior, while we still stay within our scope of practice involving adjustment of the spine and extremities. This could totally establish our position at the very top of the overwhelming wave of “natural healing” energy that is sweeping this planet. But how can we make this change in behavior consistently and not by chance as it happened with Dr. Cheatwood’s patient? And as I’m sure that we’ve all seen it happen at times with some of our own patients.

This has the potential to expand our scope of practice while remaining within the legal practice parameters of this profession and, at the same time, remaining true to the basic tenants (Philosophy, Art, and Science) of Chiropractic. But how can we go about doing this?

The incredible genius of Dr. George Goodheart has been an amazing catalyst for change and improvement within this profession. He was the first to popularize the “Triangle of Health” as a metaphor for Healing. This equilateral triangle has “Structure” as its base (meaning the structural integrity of the spine and entire skeletal system which directly and/or indirectly involves the nervous system) with “Nutrition” and “Emotions” occupying the other two sides of the triangle. My understanding of this triangle is that both “Emotions” and “Nutrition” feed back to the base (“Structure”). And that our emotions and our nutritional status can be a cause of spinal subluxations (remember that D.D. Palmer spoke of “auto suggestion” as one of the causes of subluxation).

As I understand the philosophy of Chiropractic, our creator (God/Universal Intelligence) who is perfect has infused our MindBody with a spark of God (Innate Intelligence) that flows through our nervous system instilling us with the perfection of the creator. Therefore, we should all be perfect (and our behavior should also be perfect) unless we interfere in some way with the expression of that perfection in our lives. The Universal/Innate principle is perfect but the expression of that principle in our body and in our life is not always perfect due to interference with that perfection which takes place in our mind and in our spine. Spinal interference we all understand and know how to correct, the “mind” interference has not yet been totally addressed by this profession.

Interference in the mind (what Dr. Jim Parker labeled “Quality Interference”) takes place in the Innate/Subconscious part of the mind which controls and co-ordinates the physical body through the nervous system. This major part of the mind is much like a programmable computer except that it has an amazing power and capacity that engineers can only dream about being able to put into a man-made computer. When you start a program on your desktop computer, it runs the program the way it is designed to do. When a “program” is triggered in our Innate Mind, this part of our mind powerfully runs the “program” in the same way (resulting in behavior of one type or another on our part). It doesn’t decide if the “program” will help us or hurt us in our daily life, it just does what it’s designed to do. And some “Innate programs” can interfere with the free flow of the Loving/Healing energies of the Universe that are our birthright.

We can easily determine which behavior is coming from our Educate Mind (10% of the mind) and which is coming from our Innate Mind (90% of the mind). If the behavior is logical & reasonable, it is from the Educated part of the mind. If the behavior is not logical & reasonable, it is from the Innate part of the mind (this part of the mind is not logical & reasonable but, instead, is purposeful and powerfully driven). If the behavior is not logical & reasonable and is aberrant in any way (not serving us well in our life), we in Chiropractic can change it and change it comparatively quickly.

An example of behavior that would fit into this category would be a practice where we continually treat far fewer patients and receive far less income than we want and need. Since the Chiropractic adjustment is such a powerful Healing entity, this behavior on our part is not logical & reasonable, it is obviously coming from the Innate Mind and that’s good news, because that means it can be changed. If we are perfect, then our behavior should be perfect and should provide us with total Success, Health, and Happiness (SH of the Universe as Dr. Jim Parker called it). If our behavior does not provide us with total SH in our life, it is only because we are interfering with that perfection and keeping it from ourselves. Let’s change our non-resourceful behavior and provide ourselves and this profession with all the good things in this life that are our birthright, we’re a “chosen” profession and we deserve it. And we already know how to do it.

I call this New Millennium Chiropractic and I believe it will work with any accurate system of spinal adjusting. Let’s use your practice as an example. Decide how many patients you want to adjust each day and set a date in the near future for it to happen (perhaps 3 months from now). Let’s use 100 patients a day as an example. Have your Chiropractic buddy adjust and balance your spine totally…where no subluxations are present in your spine or extremities. Now, while you are still on the adjusting table, vividly imagine yourself adjusting 100 patients a day (seeing the sights involved with it, hearing any sounds involved with it, feeling the feelings involved…the more senses you can bring into the image, the more effective this technique will be)! In your imagination, also see a calendar on the wall showing the date you have decided upon…the Innate Mind is immortal so we have to pin it down to a certain date on this earth. Since your MindBody doesn’t know the difference between a vividly imaged event and something that is actually happening physically, to your nervous system this is actually happening right now! And since we have one MindBody with the mind totally influencing the body and the body totally influencing the mind, this “happening” will bring up everything concerning the adjustment of 100 patients a day that is in your minds, including any “life-limiting Innate programs” (many of these “programs” put there when you were under the age of seven). Your Educated Mind is vividly imagining adjusting 100 patients a day but if the Innate Mind is running “programs” that disagree with this goal, there will be a conflict between the minds. And since the Innate Mind runs the physical body, it will re-subluxate the spine…with a vengeance! This is a David and Goliath type of conflict…the 10% Educated Mind is seeing you adjust 100 patients a day while the 90% Innate Mind is running “programs” that say you can’t do that (due to your not being worthy, your not having the energy, your father didn’t adjust that number of patients so you can’t, etc., etc., etc.). No matter what the “program” says, it is only a “life-limiting Innate program” and nothing more. We don’t need to know what the “programs” are or how they were put into our Innate Mind…it doesn’t matter! If vividly imaging your goal re-subluxates your spine, there are “life-limiting programs” running in your Innate Mind that disagree with your reaching that goal and they’re holding you back from achieving your MTD in this life (Mission, Talent, and Destiny as Dr. Jim called it).

To remove this limit in your life simply have your buddy totally re-adjust your spine (including ribs, TMJ, etc.) while you vividly imagine your goal! It will generally take from 1 to 6 adjustments to remove this “life-limiting program” from your Innate Mind. You’ll know this has been accomplished when you can vividly imagine adjusting 100 patients a day in the near future without any re-subluxation of your spine. When that happens, your Educated Mind and your Innate Mind are in agreement regarding this goal. You still have to provide the consistent effort to accomplish the goal but there are no longer any barriers that can block it and/or make its achievement extremely difficult and stressful to your MindBody. Dr. Jim often stated that when Educated and Innate are in agreement, everything in our life happens “Naturally Right”…easily and surely! Let’s all of us in this “chosen” profession become Naturally Right and change Chiropractic by changing our own behavior!

For Chiropractic to progress to its rightful place on this planet, we each have to progress to our rightful place in this life! We each have to do it ourselves! And we already have the knowledge and the tools to accomplish this. Mother Theresa said it well, “Don’t wait for leaders, do it yourself one by one.” @ 6:47 am | Article ID: 1073486836
