By Sharon Gorman, D.C.

Sometimes I get so busy I forget to be Grateful. I get so wrapped up in what I am doing that I forget to just be. When I forget to be then next I usually forget to pray. When I forget to pray I can easily forget that I am not running the show. I know there is a God and I know it is not me but sometimes I try to run my life on my power instead of seeking to understand God’s will for me. I know I am in trouble when my prayers sound a lot like a wish list. I act like God is the local Mall just sitting there waiting for me to tell him what I want and deciding whether he wants to give it to me or not. I don’t like to pray for my life to turn out a certain way and then judge if there is a God or not dependent on how well he delivers what I think that I should get. I am setting myself up for disappointment that way. I pray that God be with me and give me strength to deal with all of the consequences that I create by the decisions that I make and that others make too. I don’t think that God “let” my parents die over the last couple of years but I think that God was and is there to make me strong to deal with it. I don’t think that God doesn’t want us to not experience the full range of emotions that happen in life. Why would God want to rob us of our feelings. I know it is said that “God wants us to be happy” and I believe that but I also think God wants us to feel sad when sad things happen in our life and God wants us to feel scared at times and elated at times and disappointed at times, get my drift. If we are going to decide that life is only working out when things are going “good” then we are setting ourselves up for a lot of disappointment. Then there are the times that I put everything on “hold” in my life (in my mind) until something happened like I graduated from school or got down to a certain weight. I put conditions on my life and happiness. That “hold” is just and illusion. A day spent is a day gone. Good or bad.

When I find my head in a funky space where I start judging myself and others or I think I am not getting my fair share in life I need to stop, get quiet, write down at least 5 things that I am grateful for and choose to change my state of mind in that very moment by doing so. We all get funky. We are human. As humans though, we have free choice. Choose to not let your mind dwell on the negative. You can’t choose your feelings but you do get to choose your actions. I can choose to realize that usually when I am dwelling on the negative it is because my connection with God has gotten a little loose and by realizing that there is something greater than me I can put my life and my “stuff” in perspective and see them as lessons of life rather than some pit of despair that the world has thrust upon me. It’s hard to feel sorry for yourself and be grateful at the same time. I am not a victim of my feelings or of the world. I am a child of God with his warmth and protection only a thought and prayer away. Thanks for letting me share these personal feelings.

Subluxation: The Silent Killer

By Super CA Jackie

“I know you feel fine and you look healthy too. It’s great that you exercise and eat a balanced diet, but you must be aware of what is silently happening inside your body.” You may ask, “what is a subluxation and why is it called the silent killer?”

A subluxation is a spinal misalignment when one or more vertebral bones are out of place putting pressure on the spinal nerves. Subluxations decrease proper nerve flow from the brain, down the spine and out to all the organs. They are called the “silent killer” because they can destroy your health for years without you knowing it. The subluxations will eventually cause pain, symptoms, illness, disease, and maybe death. Subluxations can be painless, but pain is a warning sign indicating they have been there for weeks, months, years, since birth or even during pregnancy.

My 36 year old cousin recently had a stroke. Don’t you think that it is kind of young to have such a violent symptom? Unfortunately, he has never been under chiropractic care, but that is subject to change. Prior to his stroke, he looked and felt fine. My cousin revealed his health history to me. When he was born, he was a miracle baby and not expected to live. Before he was born, he was “silently” subluxated. In addition to medical attention, he must receive chiropractic care to have his subluxations located and corrected.

Patients get so excited when they are feeling better. After a short time of getting adjusted, they have more energy, sleep better, and their symptoms are disappearing. Great, you were in what’s called the “relief” care stage and now you are entering the “correction” stage. Your Chiropractor will let you know when you have reached the “wellness” care stage. The wellness care stage is to maintain your chiropractic corrections. Don’t take it upon yourself to cut back your care schedule that is for your Chiropractor to determine.

I always stress that chiropractic is the first line of defense to stay healthy, and all other good health habits are secondary. If you have subluxations, that are left uncorrected, it doesn’t matter what vitamins you take, what you eat, and when you exercise. The subluxations are “silently” working against your health, even though you may think you are the picture of health.

We love to hear, “Oh, thank you, thank you, I’m all better! You send chills up and down my spine. Chiropractic is the best, you’re the best!” Just remember why you started care and why your must continue. If you are not presently under chiropractic care, now is the time to make that healthy lifestyle change. Health should be your priority and don’t take it for granted how you look and feel. @ 8:43 am | Article ID: 1061912624

Urgent! Chiropractors and Patients Needed in Sacramento

(translated from an important fax message)

Tuesday, August 26, 2003
California State Capitol — Sacramento

Do your part to stop 15-visit “Hard Cap” in Workers’ Comp

As most of you know, the California Legislature is poised to adopt a 15-visit per claim “hard cap” on chiropractic care in the workers’ compensation system. This means 15 visits per claim, period. No future medical, period. No additional care even if it is recommended by another health care practitioner, period.

For our patients’ sake, we can’t let this happen!

We have no option! Doctors and patients must mobilize and bring our message directly to state lawmakers about chiropractic. CCA doctor volunteers, staff and lobbyists have and are doing everything possible to win this fight. Now it is time for you, your patients and our entire profession to stand up and be counted.

Employers will be holding their own rally the next day calling for chiropractic caps. So, please, don’t think someone else is going to be there for you and your profession. If you do, we will fail. And, failure is not an option for our patients and practices. There are no excuses period.

CREW Returning to Panama – February 2004

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Chiropractors will be traveling to Panama to serve in 2004.

I was on the phone earlier today with Lina Ocon, the main organizer of the CREW (Chiropractors Restoring Energy Worldwide) humanitarian missions to Panama. Lina told me she had recently had a meeting with the mayor of Panama City, Juan Carlos Navarro, and they have set an official date for the 2004 mission to Panama.

According to Lina, for the past year Mayor Navarro has been consistently getting asked when the chiropractors are coming back to Panama. We now have an official date.

For chiropractors that have been to Panama on previous missions, the time schedule is the same. We will be expected to arrive in Panama on Saturday, January 31st and will adjust until Saturday, February 7th.

This has been the longest time between missions since the CREW began going to Panama in 1997. However, two chiropractors (Dr. Marco and Dr. Sherry) have continued to provide chiropractic care in the city of Panama since March of 2003.

It’s time to dust off the Panama photo pages and get them updated with new information. You can view that info by visiting the following link…

Lifestyle can affect your life

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Can you imagine that? Health news services today are reporting on studies that have found most heart attacks are caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

The studies have indicated that about ninety percent of those with severe heart conditions have one or more risk factors. Smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure are all risk factors that can lead to an unhealthy heart.

According to the studies and news reports, some 650,000 heart attacks per year could be avoided or delayed by decades if individuals would change their lifestyle habits. That means quitting smoking, reducing cholesterol and controlling hypertension and diabetes.

For some, the approach to avoiding heart attacks is going to be… taking drugs to quit smoking, taking drugs to reduce cholesterol, taking drugs to control hypertension, taking drugs to control diabetes. That’s a “treat the symptom” lifestyle. These same individuals may only minimally alter their eating habits, drinking habits, exercise habits, etc…

The studies suggest that both doctors and patients should be placing an even greater emphasis on prevention. That is going to require a shift in consciousness for many now unhealthy and potentially unhealthy people.

A change in lifestyle begins with a change in consciousness. We have to first change the way we think about our health before we will actually take the action steps necessary to make those changes. Researchers involved in the studies are suggesting that folks eliminate smoking, and get fit and trim.

Go hang out in your local chiropractors office. You’ll likely find the most progressive thinking people in your community hanging out there. They are thinking healthy and they are acting healthy. They are receiving chiropractic adjustments before symptoms arise, they are invloved in daily activites that renew their body and mind, and they are on a path of wellness. That’s a path that does not rely on drugs and surgeries to treat the effects of the above mentioned conditions.

Get fit, get going, get chiropractic!

I See My Adjustments

By Mark Schulman, D.C.

I see my adjustments; they live inside of me. When I give an adjustment I expect the unexpected. Each adjustment is made up of many miracles which amaze the patients and startle me. When my intention meets reality, the unexplainable occurs. I love when I palpate and contact a vertebra and the patient says “Doc, how do you find the source of my pain so easily?” What a chiropractor thinks, says, or does appear in his or her adjustments. I consider my adjustments as the infinite, having no boundaries. I contemplate my adjustments and know their beneficial effects.

When I am on I am on, and when I am off I want to be on. Whether it is mediation, visualization or being in present time, it all works. I constantly strive to stay focused. I make every experience a chiropractic opportunity to share my caring, to search for and give the perfect adjustment. Others go boating or play golf, but I study and educate others about chiropractic. I might not know much about pro ball, but I sure know how to move a vertebra.

I am constantly defining and redefining my adjustments, so they can become as near to perfect as possible. The right adjustment, at the right time and place can bring a change to a person. Yes, the sick are dying and the healthy are living. The joy of living can come from chiropractic adjustments. This joy is visible in many dimensions–in the form of a healthier lifestyle, or pain relief, or even as a more positive outlook on life. My adjustments bring hope to the hopeless; they inspire me, and bring inspiration to others who, in return, inspire yet others. It is a transfer of energy, a flow from my innate spirit to their innate spirit. Whatever it is called, it works!

I can feel subluxations. Their existence is on my mind constantly–the air we breathe, the food we eat, the thoughts we think–how can we not be subluxated? The more certainty placed in the location and correction of a subluxation, the more effective the adjustment. The crux of chiropractic is in the adjustment. In my hands are hundreds of thousands of adjustments. Sometimes I might have to see hundreds of cases of neck and back aches before I meet a patient that will express the essence of chiropractic. I am aware that adjustments from the mind do work; however, adjustments from the heart are those that a patient deeply seeks.

How different a life becomes with an adjustment, whether it is one or a hundred or a thousand. Each adjustment has its own merit, and the outcome is simply amazing. How sad it is for those who approached their life without an adjustment. Countless suffering could be replaced with something so much better. How fortunate humanity would be with an additional hundred thousand chiropractors giving adjustments!

My Well Adjusted Children

By Super CA Jackie

“Why have your children been getting adjusted since birth? Is there something wrong with their neck or back?” These are the questions that people ask me.

My two children, Anthony (10 years old), and Michele (7 years old), were born healthy and there is nothing wrong with their neck and back. I had a plan how to keep them that way. In order to keep them healthy, they would receive Chiropractic adjustments from birth for “well care.” I knew this 17 years ago when I had my own Chiropractic miracles happen to me. (If you haven’t read my article, The Ability to Heal (7/1/03), please refer to it.)

Michele and Anthony get adjusted on a weekly basis. This is why their immune systems are able to function at such a high level. They are able to be around children that are “sick” and they will not catch their symptoms. Once in awhile if they do experience symptoms, they immediately get adjusted to give their immune system that extra kick. Within 24 – 48 hours, they are symptom free. On the other hand, the children who don’t receive Chiropractic care will stay “sick” on an average of 7-10 days.

However, if symptoms do occur, Michele and Anthony also get plenty of rest, drink a lot of water and are not given any juices or foods with sugar. Sugar lowers the immune system! Rest is also a very important part of healing.

A fever is a “good” thing. I am not upset if my children spike a fever. We just let the fever burn. A fever is the body’s way of turning on the immune system. It is one of your body’s most powerful defenses against infection. I like to say that it “burns” the infection from the body.

My children are medication free. We do not use any cover up medications, such as Tylenol, Motrin and the rest of them. Using cover-up medications just prolongs and interferes with the healing process. Antibiotics are overused and abused in today’s society. Why give your child an antibiotic thinking that you are killing an infection? Antibiotics will also lower your child’s immune system even more. What happens next? They will get “sick” again. Doesn’t it make sense to keep your child “well adjusted” to stay healthy vs. to medicate them unnecessarily and have them sick all the time?

Michele and Anthony are tuned into their bodies. They know enough to ask for an adjustment if they don’t feel 100%. What they don’t understand is why many of their friends are not adjusted. I am proud of my kids when I hear them telling the truth to a friend explaining why they should be getting adjusted.

For the record, Anthony missed only 2 days of school this year due to symptoms. Michele has not missed a day of school in Kindergarten or First grade! They know Chiropractic works!

Arnold Schwarzenegger Announces Gubernatorial Bid in California’s Recall Election

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Arnold! Arnold! Arnold!
I was speaking to some California chiropractors recently and we all agreed that if Arnold Schwarzenegger was to run for governor of the state of California, we would all support him.

For those of you that do not know, Arnold has a Doctor of Chiropractic (honorary) degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College and he has long been a strong supporter of chiropractic. His longtime bodybuilding buddy, Dr. Franco Columbo, is also a practicing chiropractor here in the state of California.

Arnold, you have my vote!

Get some passion about this thing…

By Sharon Gorman, D.C.

I have this patient. She is 90 years old. I’ve been taking care of her since she was about 75. For the last 3 or 4 years she has been homebound. She is on oxygen and the quality of her life, by our standards isn’t that great, but her family is honoring her wishes and helping her to remain in her apartment. A few weeks ago some members of her family told me that she was in and she is very weak and they don’t think that she is going to make it through the night. She had been in the hospital for several months. Her resistance is so low that she is in the hospital almost half the time. Anyway they didn’t ask me to adjust her. They would never ask me to go out of my way to go to the hospital or to the house but she would insist. I know that the quality of her life has been better because she has gotten adjusted and she knows it too. One time she came home from the hospital and I went to adjust her. She told me that she couldn’t stop trembling for about a week and she was told that she would be like that for now on. After one adjustment the symptom entirely went away and didn’t return.

So last week she went home. She survived again. The first thing she asked for after she returned home was for an adjustment. I obliged. She could hardly talk as she laid in a hospital bed in the middle of her living room. She couldn’t get out of bed. She was frail and very pale. I cleared her neck and I left. I was wondering why she wanted me to come. She seemed to be nearing the end.

I see the adjustment as life giving. If she is ready to go, what is the use. I guess after losing my mother not too long ago I am uncomfortable about being around death. The only thing she had said to me on Wednesday was will you come back on Friday? I didn’t have the heart to say no.

On my way over I was thinking about a couple of new patients who started at the beginning of the week and how great they were doing. One of them brought their kids to get checked and oh yeah, another of my patients who had had her baby 3 months premature brought the now 2 month old baby in for her first adjustment. In my mind these were significant events that happened in my practice this week. I was having trouble seeing the importance of adjusting Bx0x0e again this week yet I went.

I went into the apartment. She laid in the same spot. She had color in her face. She smiled. She said, “Sharon, I can’t thank you enough for coming on Wednesday. I had a headache for 6 weeks straight and since you were here it has been gone. It is a miracle.” It is. I blew it again. I judged. I decided that these trip might have been a waste of time. It isn’t her time. I don’t have to figure all this out. I need to keep showing up and doing the deal. God gave us a blessing in our hands. God heals through us. I can’t say no. It is not my privilege. The magic might go away.

Bx0x0e might have died this weekend. It is not my job to save her life. It is my job to turn on her life. I moved the bone. God does the healing. I wouldn’t want to die with a headache or subluxated. Get some passion about this thing called Chiropractic. When we are ready then we will be given the privilege of being there to watch miracles happen. @ 2:08 pm | Article ID: 1060117711
