What Time Do Polls Close – Election Day Vote 2008

By Michael Dorausch, DC

Below is a nationwide list of voting polls hours. You may have found yourself asking what time do polls open in my area? Depending on where you live in the United States, polling places in your area could be opening as early as 6 a.m. or as late as 12 noon. Just as important as knowing when your local polling location has opened, we want to pay attention to when polls close. So, if you have not yet voted in this year’s election and still plan to do so, ask yourself… what time do polls close?

Vote 2008 - Election 2008 Whether you’re in Harris County Texas, San Diego County California, or Honolulu Hawaii, showing up early at your local polling location probably won’t be a bad idea but showing up late (after polls have closed) would be a real bummer.

In my efforts to be a voting assistance guide, yesterday I covered details on where to vote, so be sure to check that out so you can get your local polling location plugged into your GPS, printed out on a Google map, or just written down on the back of your sample ballot. Actually, your polling place should be listed on the back of your polling booklet, if you received one in the mail.

Voting polls hours are different across the United States but most are opening between 6 and 9 in the morning. Some polling locations (like the state of Maine) have different opening times depending on size of jurisdiction. Other states, such as Minnesota and Tennessee, have polls closing at different times, also depending on the size of the area’s jurisdiction. Those states have been marked with a * so be sure to check locally if you see a * listed with your state’s poll opening or closing time.

States are listed in alphabetical order and all times are local unless otherwise noted.
