Supramental Transformation and Alignment with Divine Consciousness

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

These words will ring true for the guardians of the sacred trust. To others, they may appear mystical, metaphysical, or completely outside the realm of understanding; that is okay. Words take on different meanings at various periods in our lives.

For decades now, I have had a fascination with the history of Chiropractic – its most prolific authors and characters, influences, and roots. This fascination has led to knowledge that I share with you; the world of chiropractic extends far beyond the concepts of the adjustment and subluxation. Study the works of others and you will discover the parallels spoken by guardians who came before us, oftentimes with different definitions but undoubtedly aligned with the spirit of core chiropractic principles.

During the same period B.J. Palmer was relentlessly publishing his thoughts on a philosophy we call our own, others across the globe were doing the same. One notable figure whose writings consistently align with B.J.’s is Sri Aurobindo (a philosopher, poet, and yogi).

Sri Aurobindo discusses the theme of connectedness

Sri Aurobindo discusses the theme of connectedness to the divine extensively in his writings, often framing it as a union with the Divine Consciousness, the psychic being (the soul element within), or the descent of higher forces. Can you spot the similarities to universal intelligence, innate, and ADIO?

Aurobindo portrays this connectedness as transformative, leading to harmony, peace, and the overcoming of imperfections, including physical dis-ease or illness, which he views as rooted in ignorance, fear, or disharmony in the lower nature (mind, vital, body).

Sri Aurobindo frequently discusses the nerves and nervous system in his writings, where they are seen as part of the vital-physical being – an interface between the vital (life-force) energies and the physical body. He views disturbances in the nerves as arising from disharmony, hostile forces, or resistance to the divine force, and emphasizes that centering in the divine consciousness, through calm, faith, and the descent of higher peace or force, can heal and strengthen them.

His writings are voluminous; below are a few selected excerpts directly from his works, or compilations of his letters and talks, where he addresses Divine Centering (DC).

“Disease is needlessly prolonged and ends in death oftener than is inevitable, because the mind of the patient supports and dwells upon the disease of the body.”

This highlights how mental disconnection from the divine perpetuates illness, implying that centering in higher consciousness could prevent or shorten it.

“Only by escaping from the mental prison and emerging consciously into the light of the spirit, by a conscious union with the Divine, can we enable Him to give back to us the balance and health we have lost. The supramental transformation is the only true remedy.”

Here, Sri Aurobindo ties union with the Divine to restoring health, viewing illness as a loss of balance remedied by supramental (divine) consciousness.

“You must know that disease comes from outside. You have to find out from where it comes and also why it has come. If the cause is known, it is easy to remove it. The body is a battlefield. There are so many forces fighting for possession. In order to get rid of the disease one must know the cause and use the force to throw it out. The true method is to bring down the Light into every part of the body, into the cells, so that the disease cannot remain.”

This emphasizes centering in divine consciousness to illuminate the body, making disease incompatible. Perhaps you were not taught this in chiropractic school; however, you would hear very similar words from the elders in our field.

From The Synthesis of Yoga (on Hatha Yoga):
“But the first objects of the Pranayama are to purify the nervous system, to circulate the life-energy through all the nerves without obstruction, disorder or irregularity, and to acquire a complete control of its functioning, so that the mind and the will of the soul inhabiting the body may be no longer subject to nervous stimulus or inhibition but may control at will the vital and physical frame and hold both life and body in a perfect balance and health.”

Pranayama here is a yogic tool to purify the nerves, enabling the soul (psychic/divine element) to maintain health and balance.

The entire works of Sri Aurobindo can be found online. If you have interest to study his writings further, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram began to publish the Complete Works of Sri Aurobindo in 1997, about the same time Planet Chiropractic was formed.

Be well my friends.
