Perhaps you’ve seen the commercials: angry women yelling at their husbands, pulling at their hair and sobbing dramatically. These are commercials for PMDD or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.
PMDD is a fairly new disorder (or is it) to hit the medical scene and there is a new drug (or is it), Sarafem, to treat it. According to a recent article on ABC News, the medical community has been drawn into two camps regarding this new “treatable disorder.”
The drug (Sarafem) is receiving some controversy since it contains the same active ingredient as Prozac. The ingredient is fluoxetine hydrochloride. Some doctors say that Sarafem is merely Prozac by another name.
The disorder (PMDD) is receiving some controversy since some doctors say that it is actually PMS by another name. According to the ABC article, there is no blood test to differentiate among PMS, PMDD and normal ovulation.
