Having no symptoms is not healthy at all

By Sharon Gorman, D.C.

Monday Morning Message…

Adaptability

When I was doing my orientation last night I asked the people a question I asked them a million times. How do you know if you are healthy? Well you know all the typical answers. The silliest and most common is that I know that I am healthy if I feel good. All those people that have dropped dead “never sick a day in their lives” blow that theory out the window. Well what is it then? Being healthy is being able to adapt. Healthy people can adapt to pollen. Less healthy people have hayfever. Healthy people can adapt through the flu season. Less healthy people get the flu. Healthy people get a fever when their body is fighting off infection. Less healthy people take meds to drop their body temperature. Healthy people throw up when they eat poison food. Healthy people can adapt to quite a bit of emotional stress in their lives without getting ill. The ability to adapt is the key to measuring someone`s health.

Last few weeks we have had some “bad” weather where I live. While adjusting people this week I have noticed that they are more subluxated then usual because their bodies have been forced to adapt to the change in weather. Most of the people I adjusted seemed to be very subluxated in their upper thoracics. I was trying to figure out if that was because their bodies tighten up when they go out in the cold or if they were all shoveling snow or if it was a combination of the two. Many of the people were sick. Some of the sick people cancelled their appointments and stayed home. Some sick people came in twice as often to get adjusted so that their body can work the best it possibly could so they could get well.

People have choices to make when they are “sick”. Many people don’t think that they have a choice at all. They still think that they have to do whatever their MD tells them to. Some don’t people don’t get as far as going to the the MD in the first place. It’s their choice. They also get do choose about how they are going to deal with their symptomatic child. That’s the part that frustrates me.

The information and stuff that I have given them during each visit and over time will hopefully help them realize that they choice is theirs and that the body is amazing and that they should allow their bodies to adapt without inteference. Sometimes I get annoyed when they make decisions other than the one I would make especially when it comes to the care of their children.

Having no symptoms is not healthy at all. People go to all lengths to try to remove their symptoms because they are afraid to experience discomfort.

Think for a minute about emotional health. Being healthy is not being able to feel nothing. Being healthy is being willing to feel life and knowing that you can and have to adapt to situations outside of your control and choosing to change the things that are inside of your control.

Being alive is more of a gift if you don’t try to live dead (aymptomatic). Being healthy allows you to move forward each day knowing that innates last name is intelligence. So go out there and adapt.

Lot to think about – Sharon
