LOS ANGELES, CA — According to the US Census Bureau, the population of the United States officially hit the 300 million mark sometime early Tuesday morning. While no one knows for sure just when the US population reached 300 million, experts are confident that the milestone was reached somewhere in the last few months.

While there are no major government-sponsored celebrations planned for the day, the US secretary of commerce believes the numbers are good for the American economy.

Traveling along the 405 freeway recently, I began to suspect that there must be 300 million people living in America, the majority of them sitting in traffic here in Los Angeles, California. They sit in traffic on the 405 freeway, they putt along in traffic on the 10 freeway, they are bumper-to-bumper in traffic on the 605 freeway, and they even hit some major traffic on Lincoln Boulevard here in Venice Beach.

Fortunately, I only have to drive about 2 miles to my chiropractic office on Culver Boulevard in order to provide services to some of those 300 million people that come to see us daily (or at least during the weekdays).

I don’t know if the US Census Bureau has taken the time to think about the sheer magnitude of 300 million people in the United States and what that means chiropractic wise. Every chiropractor knows that the human body typically has 24 movable vertebrae, with most of them not doing much moving while sitting in traffic. That’s 7.2 billion potentially movable vertebrae in the United States of America.

Side Position ChiropracticTaking spinal anatomy into consideration, that results in 2.1 billion cervical vertebrae (neck bones), 3.6 billion thoracic or dorsal vertebrae (mid back bones), and 1.5 billion lumbar vertebrae (low back bones) currently residing in the United States. We haven’t even included the 300 million sacral bones (the one you’re sitting on in your car and while at your computer) which are considered movable at birth.

Chances are, one or more of your vertebrae (out of a potential 7.2 billion) may not be functioning as well as they could or should, and in chiropractic that is known as a subluxation.

subluxation (sub”luk-sa’shun) – Any vertebrae which has lost its proper juxta-position with the bone above, below, or both, which impinges on a nerve and interferes with mental impulses. That is, a spinal misalignment or malfunction that doesn’t allow your body’s communication system to work properly.

Even with all those billions of moving vertebrae in the United States, you probably still can’t lick your own elbow. Don’t try that while driving. But if you do some research, you can find a chiropractor that will help get your body’s communication system working properly again.
