A Chiropractors Report from New York

(another ground zero report from last week)
By Holly Tidwell, D.C.

Things are going good here. We have adjusted literally hundreds, certainly well over a thousand people. It is so busy at shift changes that we literally cannot count. They line up. We have 2 locations set up close to the site, and 1 at the Javits Center where the Search and Rescue teams are staying. Everyone is getting adjusted… the National Guard, the task force teams, the police, the Firefighters, the Red Cross and Salvation Army workers, the ironworkers, the volunteers… any and everyone.

Take what you see on TV and multiply it by 20 and you have a clearer picture of how it is here. The Texas Task Force team is here now searching. One of the teams found another Firefighters yesterday. The dogs come back exhausted as well, and we have DC’s to adjust them and then they get massaged too.

It is admittedly sometimes hard to go back, but then you realize what they are going through and you want to. There is still paper everywhere. I came across a name badge the other day. I saw blonde hair entwined around the top of a fence. It’s easy to understand why people in this area are supportive of war efforts, or at least trying to eliminate Osama Bin Laden.

Wall Street is guarded day and night. It’s only about 4 blocks from the site. Ground zero consists of at least 16 square blocks of destruction. There is severe damage to several other buildings. There are still over 50,000 people who can’t return to their homes.

As it turns out, I would rather ask people to make donations to the Red Cross or to the Emergency Medical Service workers for NYC. Apparently, the EMS workers do not qualify for the benefits that the police and Firefighters do.

Randy and I have been very fortunate. We were offered a free place to stay by a retired couple in Brooklyn. Our food is free at the site. And I was donated an airline ticket to get here, so I guess it has all been a blessing meant to be.

I have met some wonderful chiropractors on this trip who have given every ounce of energy they have. Please forgive my misspelling and I wish I could only remember everyone I met and their last name. There are many more, but these are the chiropractors I have had the privilege to work with… thanks go to Randy Griffin from TX, Rich Gorgo from PA, Gary Deutchman from NJ, Rob from NJ, Jay from LA, Dave from NY, Adam from NY, Wendy and Casey Coren from CT, Drew from CT, Eric from NY, Gary, Andrew, Mike from NY, and Mike, and Mike. You are all beautiful people.

Everyone appreciates the efforts and generosity of America. Thousands of supplies and clothes and food items have been donated and are in surplus at this point. Yesterday, the Red Cross distributed Teddy Bears to some of the Firefighters with notes attached from children from Oklahoma City. It was a small gesture, but things like that go a long way here. There weren’t enough to go around, maybe a hundred, so they became a cherished token quickly. Maybe that is an idea to pass along to a schoolteacher you may know.

There have been several celebrities on the scene, some for good cause and some questionable. Susan Sarandon has been down at the Javits Center flipping hamburgers for several days. Robert Di Nero (sp?) had his chefs from his restaurants prepare meals 500 at a time for the workers. Christie Brinkley came through taking pictures with the men and signing their helmets.

One of the rescue teams told us they stuck a probe some 90 feet down into a hole in the pit and the temp measured 1000 degrees F at one point, and 1200 at another. Human bodies are cremated at 800 degrees F. Sadly, this probably represents the continued burning and smell. They work in it every day trying to find someone, anyone alive, and yes they do still hold out hope although it is fading to reality.

I have lots of stories, but I’m sure this is ample for the time being. Give what you can because we are truly very, very lucky.
