Tell Them

By Sharon Gorman, D.C.

To us chiropractors the rest of the people have some different opinions on how they should take care of their bodies. Sometimes a patient will say something that seems perfectly logical to them and makes little sense to me. Usually I will share with them my views on the issue. I’m always especially careful not to offend them and make them feel like the way they think about things are wrong. I just feel differently and I share it with them.

The new patient orientation is when I get to present to them how I look at things. It would be ignorant for me to think that them listening to me for a half hour or so would change how they look at everything. For me it is opening a door. Hopefully they will start thinking about what I told them and start thinking period when it comes to their health. People have been so used to not questioning and just being told what to do with their bodies similar to how a mechanic tells them how to handle the problems with their cars.

I tell them that most importantly I want to give their bodies back to them. I want them to start making their own choices regarding their health. The chiropractic principles are a whole different way of looking at things for most people. Share with them, don’t push them. When we are pushed we either push back or we step back. Hopefully they will respect you enough so that they will have open communications with you about their health. Don’t assume because they come in regularly and you clear their subluxations that they will get what you got simply from osmosis. Share with them on an ongoing basis. Share articles that interested you. Share successes that patients enjoyed. Stimulate conversation so that you can show them how you think, we chiropractors think differently. We think and act above, down and inside, out. Demonstrate that to them in how you live your life.

Sometimes I get frustrated because some of the people I talk to about chiropractic seemingly aren’t listening because they don’t do what I would have done in a similar situation. I can’t be responsible for what they do, that is their choice. As long as I continue sharing with them even though I fear rejection and sometimes I just get lazy and think what is the difference. When I stop, it stops. I can only keep what I share. In order to create a chiropractic community in my practice and in my life I need to let people know what I have found as truth. It is not a burden, it is my life. It is my life’s work. Thank God I have a reason to be. I have a song to sing and I need to keep singing it.
