Palmer Chiropractic University System
(Davenport, Iowa) Doug Sharpe, D.C., a 1997 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, will be one of 10 USA bobsled team members at the Salt Lake City Olympics. In addition, Palmer’s Director of Chiropractic Rehabilitation and Sports Injury, Dave Juehring, D.C., will be serving as team leader.
Having won the U.S. championship in 1998 and 1999, Dr. Sharpe has devoted the past four years to full-time training. His sled earned silver at the Olympic trials. Interviewed in St. Moritz, Switzerland, in early January, Dr. Sharpe said, “I am on Cloud 9 right now, ever since being named to the team on Dec. 29. We are all changing from avid competitors to friendly teammates with a common goal. This really is my dream come true.”
Dr. Sharpe, who hails from Jeffersonville, Ind., and was a pole-vaulter while an undergraduate student at Purdue University, turned to the bobsledding event after he barely missed making the U.S. pole-vault team for the summer games in 1996. “My years at Palmer were tough, but these four years have been the biggest challenge of my life,” he said.
Dr. Dave Juehring, director of the Chiropractic Rehabilitation and Sports Injury department at the Palmer Main Clinic, Davenport, Iowa, serves as the team leader for the Men’s and Women’s US Olympic Bobsled Team. A veteran bobsled athlete and coach at the previous two winter Olympics, Dr. Juehring was responsible for team selection at the Olympic Bobsled Trials and is involved with many administrative and coaching tasks for the Salt Lake Games.
“It has been very exciting for me to see Doug’s skills develop as a bobsledder over the past few years. We have always had a strong friendship when he was a student at Palmer that has continued. It is exciting for me to have a fellow chiropractor at the Games, let alone a Palmer Graduate, but most importantly, I am excited for Doug as a friend,” said Dr. Juehring.
Dr. Sharpe has sustained no serious injuries and is very thankful for the extensive chiropractic care he has received. “I am pretty beat up right now, but I have had great care from fellow chiropractors including Dr. William Erickson, Elizabethtown, Ky.; Dr. Troy Anderson, Louisville, Ky., and Drs. Ray and Kendra (Sharpe’s sister) Hulbert, Calgary, Manitoba.” Dr. Sharpe has also provided care for other Olympic bobsledders from the U.S., United Kingdom and Canada.
Dr. Sharpe will have 10 family members cheering him on at Park City, Utah, Feb. 8-24. “Family support has been phenomenal; they have believed in my athletic destiny as much as I have,” said Dr. Sharpe.
