According to a new study done in Italy, eating lots of white bread may be linked to an increase risk of kidney cancer.

The research, which is appearing in the International Journal of Cancer, suggests that eating lots of white bread and/or pasta could lead to a modest increase in one’s risk of developing renal cell carcinoma. Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer.

The research was done at Milan’s Institute of Pharmacological Research in Italy and involved 767 adults that had been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) as well as 1534 control subjects.

Researchers also noted a modest but not significant risk of kidney cancer amongst those who ate a lot of pasta and rice. Those that consumed five slices of white bread per day were almost twice as likely to develop the cancer, according to the research.

In contrast, researchers found that increasing one’s intake of poultry, meat, and all forms of vegetables, had been shown to decrease the risk of cancer. Scientists suggest that the problem with foods like white bread, pasta, rice, and cereal, may be due to the high glycemic index of those foods and their possible involvement in insulin like behaviors. These insulin like behaviors trigger a surge in blood sugar and insulin levels, which is thought by researchers to fuel the growth of cancer cells.

Unlike white bread, vegetables contain micro-nutrients, lots of vitamins, and various elements such as carotenoids, flavonoids and phytosterols, all of which have been shown to offer certain anti cancer properties.

Researchers are recommending that people particularly cut back on the consumption of white bread, which was found to cause the greatest rise in blood glucose levels. Cutting back on the intake of white bread, pasta, white rice, and cereals, is gaining popularity for those wanting to maintain their health and is known as a low GI (Glycaemic Index) diet.

OK, so that’s a cheeseburger on a white bread sesame seed bun. It looks so tasty. In fact, I had one that looked similar for dinner about a half an hour ago. We’d probably all be better off without the bun, and some would say we’d be better off without the meat and cheese as well. For me, To do my part in decreasing my risk of developing renal cell carcinoma I’ll just have to cut back on my five cheeseburger a day diet or put all five of those patties on one bun!
