The 90-degree heat did nothing to stop the enthusiasm of the players and coaches during an intense week of training and education on the nuances of top level rugby. The players were divided by grade level and worked within their team to improve techniques such as tackling and passing. The week culminated with an actual match between the teams in each group. When it all ended, there were smiles, handshakes, and a renewed appreciation for the sport these teenagers have come to love.

In addition to the physical and sporting aspects of rugby, the camp also focused on the off-field necessities such as diet and nutrition, strength and conditioning, as well as goal setting and mental preparation. All these aspects were incorporated into the camp regimen not only because they are vital to the success of any athlete, but also because the out-of-town campers staying together at a local hotel might have been otherwise tempted to order pizza or room service. With the intense summer heat in Georgia, hydration and sustenance were key.

Said Dan Payne, director of rugby at Life University, “It was incredible to see high school students have such a passion and energy for the game at this age. That type of enthusiasm cannot be taught. You either have it or you don’t. And these kids definitely have it!”

Rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Of the 65 high school students who attended the camp, 20 came by plane. Two players traveled from Europe and another flew in from Korea just to attend the camp. Rugby’s popularity in the metro Atlanta area is evident by the fact that 23 Georgia high schools currently field boys’ teams and another five field girls’ teams. In 2012, rugby will be an official event in the London Olympics.

Said Payne, “This camp was really like the perfect storm, because high school rugby is growing so fast around the country at the same time Life University is building its reputation as the top program in the country.” Life currently has two teams competing in the top leagues in the country, and will be adding a third team this year to compete in the inaugural Rugby Premier League, an elite league of 32 universities such as Tennessee, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
