Cipro Scam and Smallpox Too

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

The Washington Post reported today that US Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson is expected to sign a contract this weekend to “purchase enough smallpox vaccine for every American.” According to the Post report, Thompson has “warned the White House the cost could be quadruple the $509 million he originally estimated — or equivalent to the department’s entire $1.9 billion bioterrorism budget.”

One point nine billion dollars on a smallpox vaccine? Are you freaking kidding me? According to the Post, Thompson stated that he was “disappointed” with the bids received from three companies offering to make the vaccine. The cost reportedly came in at around $8 a dose but he is hoping to “settle on a lower price in final negotiations on Friday, as he did in his recent talks on the antibiotic Cipro.”

Alternative media sites are stirring, suggesting the Government Cipro (ciprofloxacin) deal was nothing more than a big rip off. The online version of Insight Magazine reports that the extraordinary wheeling and dealing was done in the name of public health and safety and was orchestrated by none other than US Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. According to Insight, Thompson stated: “Everyone said I wouldn’t be able to reduce the price of Cipro. I’m a tough negotiator.”

Insight reports bioterrorism experts questioned the price of the Cipro deal — 95 cents per pill, marked down from $1.77, a reduction from Bayer’s retail price of $4.67 per tablet, which still guaranteed Bayer an estimated 65 cents profit per pill. Soon after the deal was announced (and after Americans went into a Cipro buying frenzy) the media began reporting of alternative antibiotics such as penicillin and doxycycline which some drug companies apparently offered to the Government for free.

According to the Insight report, “suspicion of the medical establishment abounds, and suspicion was raised further when HHS had a sudden change of heart about its drug of choice for treating anthrax just days after Secretary Thompson negotiated his $100 million ‘deal’ on Cipro, announcing doxycycline and penicillin are just as effective for treating anthrax.”

If my calculations are correct, Bayer will receive $61,750,000 in profit from the $100 million dollar deal. I am sure we will hear about the smallpox figures later this week.

Fear is for sale in America, are you buying it?
