Chiropractic: Bigger Than the Internet?

Drop your anchor doctor because the digital tide is coming in.

To say that times are changing and the moment has come for you to decide what it is that you do would simply be an understatement.

There is a shift in the world’s consciousness that will affect the process of the tides to come. Over the next few weeks, I plan to bring you several of the developments and experiences I have seen unfold here on the digital coast. (Los Angeles)

Know Thyself Doctor
It’s time to become very clear as to what it is that you do and who you are as a chiropractor. Do you understand the process? Do you have a clearly articulated plan as to what it is that you do?

I am not here to tell you that this is what I would like to happen; my philosophical opinions are merely just that. I am here to tell you of what it is that I am seeing daily from my position here in the world of technology.

Eyesight of a hawk, vision of a clam
The ACA is continuing to move in the direction of the AMA, yet the AMA seeks no involvement with the ACA. The ICA appears to be moving in the direction of the ACA, yet less and less chiropractors want involvement in the ICA. LACC is moving in the direction of adding on campus animal laboratory testing, yet PETA states that “Millions embrace chiropractic for its progressive approach to healing” and non-use of drugs.

Anti-quackery movements are publicizing that chiropractors are the at the root of anti-vaccination movements and informed consent movements, yet the public and government are beginning to ask some serious questions about the use of vaccines and the risks possibly associated with them.

The philosophy of one century is the common sense of the next.
Remember the days when a practice management guru would ask questions such as: when was the last time an individual came into your office and said, “I want more life, I want to be better connected to the universe?”

That remark used to receive a chuckle as a response yet today the response is increasingly more likely to be a comment such as “yesterday” or “this morning.”

Buy a Clue
Have you seen the Lexus and Saab commercials and their marketing relationship to chiropractic? Have you considered whom these companies are marketing to? Do you think that maybe they have studied their target market and know what those markets relate too?

A little thing called the Internet
Last week, I attended the largest Internet event the world has ever seen. More than 50,000 turned out for Spring Internet World 2000 held in Downtown Los Angeles, Ca. (only blocks away from Planet Chiropractic Headquarters) The event was attended by some of the most successful and technical in the Internet field with more than 800 companies represented with presentations being made by individuals such as Steve Case, CEO for America Online.

During the weeklong presentations, an interesting question was continually asked on the conference floor. In a lighthearted manner, the topic of rapid changes and advances in Internet and technology was resulting in an increasing pain in the neck. The comment was soon followed by the now predictable question as to whether one should I see a chiropractor?

Canned Laughter
Focus on the context of the question doctor and not on the neck. The question was asked by a “planted consumer” in order for Internet companies to come back with the response that if you used their technology you would not have a “pain in the neck.” Very similar marketing to the Lexus and Saab ads yet they went as far as to tell those in the audience what to ask.

All well and good but still missing the boat?
Not your idea of chiropractic doctor?
Maybe you’ll like this better. (Get ready for my tech talk)
The mother of all topics at this conference was “BANDWIDTH.” Bandwidth is the stuff that flows from computer to computer across the Internet and is in such high demand.

There is actually no shortage in bandwidth, it is that special something that represents the digital ideas, movies, books, audio, and other thoughts, conceived by man and is infinite in existence.

Stuck in traffic lately?
It’s not the bandwidth, but the transmission of bandwidth that is a problem. Bandwidth on the Internet gets from one place to another through what Internet techies have termed “the internet backbone.”

The Internet backbone is a physical entity and the state of that “backbone” is absolutely critical to the transmission of reliable data through the system. Paying close attention to the Internet backbone is absolutely critical to the survival and growth of our developing digital global nervous system and everybody wants more bandwidth.

Give me all you’ve got.
There was quite a demand for bandwidth during the week’s presentations and there was a definite bandwidth “Crunch.” The discussions in technical circles was as follows:

Bandwidth Protocols and Standards – Advances in Enabling Critical Functions
Bandwidth & Gridlock on the Information Super Highway – Tactics for Handling the Crunch
Removing Barriers from Today’s Networks
Choosing a Backbone Provider – Performance and Reliability is Critical

Anchor Tenants.
I am sure many of you are already seeing the analogy of what you do as a chiropractor and what needs to be done for the Internet to function to the best of its ability. Gee it would be great if we could make some comparison of the relationship the spine and the nervous system have and that the role of a chiropractor is to free those “gridlocks and crunches” so that the information traveling through the human superhighway could function to the best of its ability.

“I’m not concerned with the data Mrs. Jones, my role is to remove the barriers from your network so that the information can get to where it is going with as little interference as possible.”

I can see the chiropractoids and quacksters snickering already. “You are going to compare some unscientific cult to the to the greatest technological concern facing this planet?” Sorry doctor but you have been robbed of the opportunity.

On the conference floor, and throughout the conference the neon words were echoed, “Our backbone providers are removing the barriers and gridlock, enabling critical function, and are delivering better performance and reliability than YOUR CHIROPRACTOR can.”

Never mind that the integrity of Internet backbone providers was compared to the work of chiropractors.
Never mind that the analogy was made by Internet tech heads and marketing gurus, and not chiropractors.
Never mind that the analogy is right on with what it is that you do and is one of the best I have heard from outside our field in some time.

They said YOUR CHIROPRACTOR, as if everybody already has one and that the removal of interference is what chiropractors do.

I’d hate for you to be the last to know, enjoy the surf.
