Banks Open On Good Friday 2009

By Daria Belov

Are banks open on Good Friday? What about the Post Office (USPS), United Parcel Service (UPS), Federal Express (FedEx), and the US Stock Exchange? Are they open or closed on the Friday before Easter? Here’s info on banking holidays, usps holidays, nyse holidays, and others for 2009 Good Friday.

I did some searching and put together a list of answers to questions many people ask regarding Federal holidays, public holidays, and religious holidays in the United States. Questions like is Good Friday a Bank Holiday, is Good Friday a Federal Holiday, and is Good Friday a Postal Holiday.

Back in January, we posted a detailed 2009 Postal Holiday Schedule, along with 2009 holiday hours for UPS and FedEx. Most of the information on that list still applies, so go ahead and check that out if you’re seeking to view the post office holiday schedule, 2009 FedEx holiday schedule, or UPS holiday schedule.

I had the same questions as you regarding Good Friday and holidays in the US, it’s a good thing I checked, here is what I discovered.

Are banks open on Good Friday? YES
US banks are open on Good Friday, the Friday before Easter in the United States. The next time US banks will be closed for an observed federal legal US holiday will be May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day) in the United States. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May.

Is the Post Office open on Good Friday? YES
The Post Office, aka United States Postal Service or USPS, maintains regular service hours on the Friday before Easter, Good Friday is not a federal holiday.

Is UPS open on Good Friday? YES
As far as I could find in conducting searches, UPS is open and maintains normal service hours on Good Friday. Not sure about Easter Sunday, but I don’t think UPS has any regular services on Sunday anyways.

Is FedEx open on Good Friday? YES
Similar to operations at UPS, everything I can find showed that there will be no early closings at FedEx offices, or changes in deliveries or pickup schedules, for Good Friday 2009.

Is the stock market open on Good Friday? NO
Good thing I checked that one, thought they may all be YES. The stock market is not open on Good Friday, April 10, 2009. Good Friday is the only holiday recognized by the stock market, aka New York Stock Exchange, during the month of April. The next holiday closing for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will be Monday, Memorial Day, May 25, 2009.

So banks are open, the post office is open, UPS has regular operations, FedEx has regular operations, but the New York Stock Exchange will be closed, as I suspect will most businesses that work in-line with the New York Stock Exchange and trading industries.

I’d still check locally on banks and credit unions for closures, I’d also check locally for small business closures in your area (maybe call before sitting in traffic to discover a place is closed). For example, adio chiropractic office in Los Angeles will close early for Good Friday. They will be maintaining early morning hours on Friday and will return for a short afternoon shift so that people can receive their chiropractic care before the 2009 Easter weekend.

Are department stores open on Good Friday and are department stores like Wal-Mart and Target opened on Easter? From what I could find, stores like Wal-Mart, Macy’s, and Target will be open on Easter Sunday. According to searches I performed, Wal-Mart is open every day for regular store hours except for Christmas Day. Easter Department Store Sales are virtually guaranteed.

To be certain, check with your local Wal-Mart, Target, and other department stores for store holiday hours. I really wish department store web sites would provide holiday store hour information in an easy to find location on their sites.
