“Tell the staff to schedule you in for your next February 29th chiropractic adjustment appointment.” That’s what I told a handful of patients today, just to see if they were paying attention. Funny how many people didn’t realize we were putting them in the computer for a four year follow-up appointment. Now that’s planning!
23rd Street Lifegaurd Station Venice Beach 90291
Don’t let the sunshine fool you, while it may appear beautiful along the beach in Venice California (that’s the 23rd Street Lifeguard Station near my house), it’s rather chilly out. Chilly for many of us Southern Californians is when it’s below 65 degrees in the afternoon. I can hear the violins playing in Michigan, Chicago, and other parts of the United States, that really know what it’s like to be chilly in February. Even though I’m originally from New York, I have joined the warm-blooded bunch.
It’s marathon training season here in Los Angeles, and I have a good number of runners coming in for regular adjustments, as they prepare for the 2012 Los Angeles Marathon on March 18th. What’s cool as we’ve been getting calls from as far as Japan and Kenya from people that want to get adjusted before the event. The Internet, my work as a chiropractor, my interest in long-distance running, as well as my photography skills, have helped me to meet world-class distance runners from all over the world. Looking forward to seeing if someone like Markos Geneti or Wesley Korir crosses the finish line under two hours, six minutes and 30 seconds. Markos Geneti won the 2011 LA Marathon with a time of 2:06:35, which at the time was the fastest marathon ever run in the state of California.
What I love about the distance runners, and many of my other clients that are engaged in other kinds of physical activity that require consistent training, is that discipline mentality. They run whether it’s raining or not. They make time to train, even if they have to take time off from work in order to accomplish their goals. They get adjusted with consistency.
Chiropractic care once every four years is better than no chiropractic care at all, and I suppose if you were born on February 29th and you had your first chiropractic adjustment today, you’d at least be off to a good start. Personally, I’d like to see people be more consistent with their care, like they were training for the marathon of their life. For those of you that tend to procrastinate, February 29, 2016 (Leap Day 2016) is a Monday, and the good news is most chiropractors will be working on that day. I’ll do my best to remind you a few thousand times between now and then, to go visit your local chiropractor.
For more information on the race, visit LA Marathon. Hope to see you there!

LIFE Master of Sport Health Science major, player and coach joins top English rugby league
MARIETTA, GA – Life University (LIFE) rugby player and coach Paul Emerick has been signed to the London Wasps, one of 12 English rugby unions making up the elite Aviva Premiership – the highest league of play in the English rugby system.
Emerick, who is earning his Master’s degree in Sport Health Science at Life University, has played rugby internationally since achieving All-American status at Northern Iowa University in 2003. He came to Life University from Ulster, the Irish professional union team, after playing in both the Italian and Celtic leagues. Most recently, he represented the U.S. in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He flew to London on Sunday, February 5, on a short-term contract to finish the remainder of the 2012 season with the Wasps. A longer-term contract is still up for negotiation.
Says Emerick of the signing, which was made official on Thursday, February 2, 2012, “I’m very excited and happy with the offer. It has definitely been a goal for me to play in that league [Aviva Premiership], as it’s one of the best – if not the best – competitions in Europe.”
The 32-year-old center/wing had been playing on LIFE’s Rugby Super League team, serving as back coach for the LIFE College Premiere Division Team, and as co-head coach for LIFE’s Rugby Sevens Team. Emerick’s involvement with the LIFE Rugby program has played a significant role in furthering his career.
“Our entire program is excited to watch him take on this tremendous opportunity,” says LIFE Rugby Director Dan Payne. “When one of our players is able to compete on the international or professional stage, it’s a victory for the entire program and a credit to the training environment at LIFE. Paul contributes to that environment immensely. Obviously, the value and energy he brings to our program will be hard to replace.”
In October 2011, Emerick tore his medial collateral ligament (MCL) and was fully rehabilitated on campus at Life University’s Sport Science Institute (LUSSI), a state-of-the-art training and rehabilitation facility. LUSSI is chiropractic-based, and uses a coordinated team of professionals to provide integrated science and technology to assist elite athletes in achieving optimum physical performance, injury prevention and sustained rehabilitation. “I feel good and healthy,” Emerick says, “It’s a credit to my rehab at LIFE. Working in this professional environment gave me the confidence to play at that level for the Wasps.”
About Life University – Founded in Marietta, Georgia in 1974, Life University is a health sciences institution most known for its chiropractic program, the largest in the world. Life University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award four-year undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of health care, science, business and general studies fields, and also has programmatic accreditation through the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). The mission of Life University is to empower students with the education, skills and values necessary for career success and life fulfillment, based on a vitalistic philosophy.
Hayward, California – A study on health-related quality of life improvements and Directional Non-Force Technique Chiropractic was published in the December 2011 issue of the Chiropractic Journal of Australia, a peer reviewed journal. The primary author is Kim Khauv D.C. and Life West faculty member, and alumnus, and co-author is Christopher John D.C. from Beverly Hills, California.
The article titled “Health-related Quality of Life Improvements in Adult Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain under Low-force Chiropractic Care: A Practice-based Study,” details a study involving 22 chiropractic offices. Each recruited six participants totaling 131 adult patients who suffered from chronic low-back issues where the pain lasted longer than three months. These patients had never experienced Directional Non-Force Technique chiropractic care prior to the study. The treatment plan consisted of six total visits within approximately four weeks. At the end of the study, patients experienced statistically significant improvements in general health, functional disability, pain and overall quality of life.
Obturator Nerve – ventral divisions of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th lumbar nerves
Dr. Khauv looks forward to a follow-up study measuring longer term quality of life outcomes with particular regard to the cost effectiveness of chiropractic care. He says, “The study and its results are congruent with the Life West research directive regarding quality of life, pediatrics and nervous system. It is a meaningful contribution to the mounting evidence for the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments.”
Dr. Christopher John is pleased to team with Dr Khauv and Life West in validating the results of DNFT chiropractic in an area of public health that costs the United States over 100 billion dollars annually.
Life West, established in 1976, is an accredited non-profit institution of higher learning. Over 4,500 graduates of Life West are now providing chiropractic care worldwide. The college’s Health Center, a public outpatient facility staffed by approximately 150 senior interns who are guided by licensed doctors of chiropractic, provides affordable health care to more than 1,000 patients per week in the city of Hayward, California.

Racy advertisements on Game Day have been raising eyebrows long before GoDaddy Girl Candice Michelle (wife of a chiropractor) was featured in a 2005 wardrobe malfunction Super Bowl Ad, but thanks to the Internet, people can (and do) tweet real-time, their distaste for brands and advertisements using such tactics in marketing. The GoDaddy commercials today tend to attract a lot of negativity, and also a lot of buzz, but what about the others?
I’m a sucker for dogs in commercials (my yellow Labrador was a Purina Dog Chow TV star), so this year most of my favorite Super Bowl commercial picks would go to the dogs, likely the Mr. Quiggly Sketchers running shoes ad. But Mr. Quiggly wasn’t the only one wearing black and red (and let’s face it, few people are searching for Mr. Quiggly).
Model Catrinel Menghia in Fiat 2012 Super Bowl Ad
Model Catrinel Menghia (she’s Romanian, not Italian) was featured in the Fiat 500 Abarth Commercial (the same brand of car we’ve seen Jennifer Lopez featured in for months now). Personally I’m unsure whether the target market for the Red Fiat 500 Abarth is male or female, the JLo ads had me thinking it was more a car marketed towards women. The Super Bowl spot certainly appeared to have men as the target.
FIAT 500 Abarth – 2012 Super Bowl Commercial – Seduction
I’m not in the market to buy a car, but I thought the ad was clever, and not too over the top. It got my attention, it was funny, and I remembered it enough to research it further. There was a KIA Super Bowl Ad featuring Motley Crue (Kickstart My Heart Song), model Adriana Lima, an MMA fighter, and others, but I couldn’t pick the car out if you showed it to me now. I remember it was white, or silver, or something. Was the ad over the top? Overall, I thought it was a great ad, something you could expect to see during the Super Bowl.
Supermodel Adriana Lima may have scored the biggest win, since she was also the model featured in the Teleflora Valentine’s Day flowers advertisement. When that ad ran, the room of 20+ people I was in went quiet, as everyone watched.
Adriana Lima for Teleflora Super Bowl Ad
At least from a chiropractors perspective she was sitting on the bed. It can be terribly difficult to get your nylons on while standing and leaning forward, especially when your backs not feeling so hot (I call that the sock test). Kids in the room seemed unfazed by the ad but online I noticed several not so happy tweets immediately after the spot ran. Here’s the ad.
Adriana Lima tells us Valentine’s Day is not that complicated, “Give and you shall receive.” Maybe this commercial is a good reminder for those unaware that Valentine’s Day is only a week away. Unhappy tweets aside, the goal is to get people to order flowers online and I think that message was made clear.
Would I play any of these ads in the office? No, but I think a football game is a different situation from a chiropractors reception area. I’m quite particular as to what gets shown on our office TV screens, too many drug ads already. While I’m on the topic, go see your local chiropractor, they’ll be happy to see you.
But the dogs, I think it’s safe to say I’d show any of those, and I found them all funny (even the cat buried in the yard Doritos ad). You’ve probably seen all the ads already, but if you want to watch your favorites again, you can view the entire 2012 Ad Blitz on YouTube. Cheers and congratulations to the New York Giants on their Super Bowl 46 victory!
Now get back to work.

What time does the Super Bowl start? That’s a question patients in my office have been asking all week. Super Bowl XLVI (#SB46) kickoff starts at 6:20 PM Eastern time in Indianapolis, Indiana. In the US, the Superbowl will be televised on NBC. Also, the Super Bowl will be broadcast online and to mobile phones for the first time this year. As we’ve traditionally done on Planet Chiropractic, I’ve put together a handy game day guide for Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2012.
Super Bowl XLVI – Who is playing in Super Bowl 2012? That’s another question people have been asking me. I’ve come to realize that not everyone has been watching DirecTV’s RedZone channel every Sunday since the 2011 NFL season started. Believe it or not, for many Americans (and others in the world) this is the only football game they’ll watch all year, and some are more interested in the commercials.
Super Bowl 2012 will be a game between the National Football Conference (NFC) champion New York Giants and the American Football Conference (AFC) champion New England Patriots to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 2011 season. Those two teams last met at the 2008 NFL Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Arizona. The New York Giants won.
Chiropractor Michael Dorausch at Super Bowl
Superbowl Schedule 2012 – Kickoff time for the championship game is scheduled for 6:20 PM EST (that’s 3:20 PM for those of us in states like California). The game will be played in Indianapolis and televised on NBC (Channel 4 in many US cities – check your local and HD listings). The national anthem is expected to be sung by Kelly Brianne Clarkson (the first American Idol winner) and the Super Bowl XLVI halftime performance will feature Madonna.
Super Bowl XLVI Live Stream – In 2009 we had a guide to watching the Super Bowl live online, and this year NBC and Verizon are making it possible to watch the game on mobile phones and online. According to the NFL, a Super Bowl Live Stream will be available on league and network websites. Here’s a link for the NFL Super Bowl Live Stream. A Super Bowl Mobile Stream will be available via Verizon’s NFL mobile app so you can watch the Super Bowl on iPhone & Droid Verizon Phones.
While most of us will be watching Super Bowl 46 on big screen LCD TVs (and many others streaming to our iPads, tablets, Droids and other mobile devices), in 2012 there are still some 200+ radio stations that will broadcast the Super Bowl live. My best advice is to check local sports AM radio stations, as well as ESPN radio and SiriusXM NFL Radio for satellite radio broadcasts.
Super Bowl XLVI Location – The 2012 NFL National Championship game takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The stadium is located at 500 South Capitol Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana 46225 (Google map). My previous experience of attending Super Bowls has taught me that parking can be pure insanity. If you have Super Bowl tickets and are going to this year’s game, plan your parking strategy in advance.
Super Bowl Spread – Super Bowl odds are close this year, 3 points. The over/under is 54 (combined score of the two teams). In Super Bowl XLII (2008), the New England Patriots were favored over the New York Giants by eleven and a half points (11.5). In that game, the Patriots lost to the Giants, final score was 17-14. Super Bowl odds makers have the New England Patriots favored again this year. Super Bowl XLVI Lines have the New England Patriots favored +3 Points (or NY Giants as Underdog -3 Points). Odds and Spread information is posted for news and entertainment only.
Places like Las Vegas (and likely online sports betting sites too) have many prop bets like who will be Super Bowl 2012 MVP award winner? For the New York Giants, odds favor Eli Manning (7-5) and Victor Cruz (8-1). For the New England Patriots, odds favor Tom Brady (7-5), Rob Gronkowski (12-1), and Wes Welker (12-1). Here’s a source for 2012 New York Giants prop bets, and a source for 2012 New England Patriots prop bets.
Super Bowl Recipes – 2 pounds of thick cut bacon mixed with 2 pounds of Italian sausage are the prime ingredients in a Bacon Explosion®, a top Superbowl recipe. Guacamole, pizza, and chicken wings are also high on the list for Sunday’s recipes. This week the Washington Post had 7 different chicken wing recipes perfect for a Super Bowl bash. At my place in Southern California, we’ll be serving pork carnitas, with loads of chips and guacamole.
Pork Carnitas with Guacamole and Sour Cream
Super Bowl Commercials – Millions of people tune in to watch Super Bowl commercials, some are more interested in the advertising than in the game itself. With this year’s cost of a 30-second commercial at $3.5 million, advertisers are hoping to cash in on the many millions who will watch. Car companies are expected to dominate this year’s commercials, and nearly half of the commercials expected to air have already been circulating online.
The 2012 Kia Optima Super Bowl commercial (watch it on YouTube) features Victoria Secret Fashion Show Model Adriana Lima, Motley Crue, and even a bucking rhinoceros. Volkswagen, Audi, Chrysler, Ford, Chevrolet and other automakers have advertisements in the game. There are big hopes that consumers will have interest in new cars by the time the game is over.
Madonna Super Bowl Halftime Show – Madonna will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show and she is expected to perform her new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin'” with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj. How old is Madonna? 53 years young and likely traveling with her chiropractor (that makes 3 chiropractors potentially on the sidelines for Sunday’s big game). Besides her new single, Madonna is expected to perform the songs “Ray of Light,” “Vogue,” “Music” and “Holiday.”
Super Bowl Team Colors – There’s lots of red, white and blue in Super Bowl 46. For the AFC Champion New England Patriots, team colors are Nautical Blue, New Century Silver, Red, and White. Colors for the NFC champion New York Giants are Blue, Red, White, and Gray. If you’re baking a Super Bowl cake; strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream should cover you for red white and blue. Balloons in red, white and blue are perfect for a 2012 Super Bowl party.
Super Bowl on Twitter – What’s the Super Bowl hash tag on twitter? Super bowls have always been numbered in Roman numerals but pecking out #SuperBowlXLVI and even #SBXLVI is a lot more difficult than #SB46, which is the hash tag nearly everyone has been using all week. Hash tags like #SuperBowl, #NYGiants, #NEPatriots, #GoGiants, #GoPatriots will be popular as well. I will be tweeting from my @chiropractic account throughout the game.
For those of you already thinking about the 2012 NFL season and wondering when is the next Super Bowl, I’ve got that information for you too. Super Bowl XLVII (2012 season) is scheduled for February 3, 2013 at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Check back a few days before the game for my 2013 Super Bowl Guide.

C.O.R.E. refers to the idea that if we can put our differences aside, and unite on our strengths, then we are one step away from impacting and area and two steps away from impacting our profession and a sick care system that is failing. While we agree with the first couple of lines, we’re not sure about impacting all chiropractors so we will start with a C.O.R.E.!
But we believe it won’t take much to tip the profession, and we in the San Gabriel Valley feel as if it isn’t too far from happening with C.O.R.E.’s popping up nationwide. We are committed to making a difference. We’ve been trying to prove that it’s not the quantity of chiropractors coming together but the quality of chiropractors coming together that will make the biggest difference.
The C.O.R.E. group drives home the idea that we are all connected to accomplish something great in a profession we love. It has been our hope since C.O.R.E. was launched in August 2003, that C.O.R.E. will be more than just a generic organization, rather a force for good, by bringing social conscious to social/professional networking while building a foundation toward becoming the premiere organization in chiropractic while working with established organizations within our profession. We look forward to your involvement.
