Valentine’s Abundance in Ontario

Valentine’s Day was a little sweeter for the Wiarton Salvation Army Foodbank this year with the addition of just under one ton of food to top up their dwindling stores.

A Ton of Food! - Photo by Keith Gilbert, Wiarton EchoThe sixth annual H.O.P.E. Day at the Wiarton Family Chiropractic Centre brought in 1,921 pounds of food in a record-breaking food-drive. “Our patients and wellness clients have done it again” is how Dr. Steven Silk responded when asked to comment on the mountain of food in the reception area of the Brown Street facility.

“I believe it to be a statement of how people value what we are accomplishing here” said Dr. Silk when asked how their small office could generate such a large volume of food year after year. “It is also a reflection of the spirit of the people who utilize chiropractic to improve their health, which in turn dramatically demonstrates the heart of small-town Ontario.”

H.O.P.E (Helping Other People Eat) has brought in 11,048 pounds of food since being developed by Dr. Silk’s partner and wife, Dr. Raelynn Cancel, in 1996. “This is our way of giving back to our community” said Dr. Cancel in explaining the exchange of fees for food concept of the food drive. “With a large number of people in this area being seasonal workers, the need of a well-stocked food bank at this time of year is reality that we can’t ignore” she said.

“We’d like to thank everyone who made a donation, no matter how big or how small, for each of you has done your part to make life a little easier for your fellow citizens” said Dr. Silk, “We’re proud to have you as members of our practice.”

Congratulations to Drs. Silk and Cancel for the dedication and commitment they have shown to their community and to chiropractic.
