More On Phenylpropanolamine

The Planet Chiropractic News Team has put together a list of over-the-counter products that contain Phenylpropanolamine. Please share this information with your patients, practice members, family, and friends.

What is Phenylpropanolamine?
Phenylpropanolamine is an ingredient found in many prescriptions and over-the-counter cough and cold products. It is primarily used to treat symptoms of allergy, colds, and upper respiratory infections but is also found in several brands of diet pills.

Phenylpropanolamine is a stimulant and effects the central nervous system. It can produce symptoms such as increased heart rate, dizziness, high blood pressure, nausea, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, dry mouth and diarrhea, and now has been associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke.

Used to relieve nasal congestion due to colds, hay fever, upper respiratory allergies, and sinusitis, it is available in non prescription products alone and in combination with other non prescription drugs, to treat symptoms of allergy, colds, and upper respiratory infections.

Phenylpropanolamine can be found alone or in combination with other ingredients in the following medications (drugs):

Dimetapp ®
DayQuil ®
Contac ® 12 Hour
Triaminic ®-12
Tavist ® D
Entex ® LA
Robitussin ® CF
Comtrex ®
Alka-Seltzer ® Plus Cold Medicine

These are just a few of the drugs this ingredient can currently be found in. There’s many more.

Diet Pills
Many people are lead to believe that diet pills are a safe and effective way to lose weight. Many diet pills on the market are not safe, can cause serious side effects (remember Phen-Fen?) and have even resulted in death. Popular diet pills such as Acutrim ® and Dexatrim ® contain a combination of phenylpropanolamine and caffeine.

Phenylpropanolamine is also found in these drugs:

Propagest ®
Rhindecon ®
Acutrim ®
Dexatrim ®
Dex-A-Diet ®
Unitrol ®
Appedrine ®
Dex-A-Diet ® Plus Vitamin C
Dexatrim ® Plus Vitamin C
Diadex ® Grapefruit Diet Plan

Notice that just because there are vitamins in some of these, that does not mean they are necessarily good for your health.

Living a chiropractic lifestyle involves knowing what to put and not to put into your body. Chiropractors would not even consider taking any of the above medications nor would they recommend them to members of their family or their practice. If you are not living a chiropractic lifestyle and would like to be healthier, it’s time you speak to your chiropractor about you and your families health.
