Transition from Traditional Medicine to Modern Wellness

From the O.C.C.P. comes a special Quote of the Month

There has been a lot of talk about the book Possibility Living. It is in it’s first months release and sales are steadily increasing.

Dr. Robert A Schuller will be the guest speaker for the Orange County Chiropractic Philosophy Society on October 24, 2000 in Orange County, California. The following is excerpted from the book which was co-authored by Douglas Di Siena, D.C., FICA

In the words of Robert Schuller:
As our children grew, we did our best to be good parents. The first thing the nurse did was to take the children away and put them through a battery of blood tests. They put medication in their eyes, cleaned them up and then handed them back to us. As prescribed by the pediatrician we had the vaccinations on schedule. When they had a runny nose we brought them in and received the prescription of antibiotics and administered them to our children meticulously.

Unfortunately, my boys didn’t do very well as young children. My oldest son Bobby, had chronic ear infections. He ultimately had major surgery to remove his tonsils, adenoids and place tubes in his ears. It did little good as the ear infections continued. My youngest son Anthony was on the same path that Bobby was on. He had chronic ear infections and in addition he had asthma. We went to the emergency room on numerous times with a “blue” child. It was very dangerous and scary. By the grace of God he survived.

It was at that time that my wife started going to Dr. Michael Shalhoub, a chiropractor, for back pain. She had scoliosis in her spine. He told her that he needed to see the entire family. When Donna mentioned that I needed to go and see him I thought she had really misunderstood my situation. I didn’t have any back pain. “I was in perfect heath.”

The truth was that I had chronic sinus infections. I was taking antibiotics every month. My nose and throat were filled with mucous. It made me horse or talk in a nasal tone. As a pastor and preacher that is a poor way to communicate. It had reached the point that every Christmas eve and Easter I knew that I would be coughing and sneezing and wondering how I would make it through the four or five services I would be expected to preach.

Wives can be very persuasive, or at least mine is, and she insisted that I go to the chiropractor. Of course, I went to make her feel better. He took some x-rays and showed me that my spine needed some work. He also informed me that he could help me with my sinus infections.

The next week I saw my friendly pharmacist, Bernie, and told him that I was going to a chiropractor. He asked, “Do you have back problems?”
“No,” I said, “but he thinks he can help me with my sinus infections.”
“Help you with your sinus? What does sinus have to do with your back?”
With that he became angry and said, “I wish those &#%! chiropractors would just treat the back and quit trying to cure everything!”

That was one of the last times I saw him. Not because he became angry but because we now rely on God’s plan for health through possibility living rather than always using medications.

So why was my pharmacist angry? Now I know why. He lost a customer! We used to spend thousands of dollars annually on prescriptions and medications. Among the six of us, we saw him once or twice a week. Now we see our chiropractor instead.

Going to see Dr. Michael Shalhoub, my chiropractor, began my transition from traditional medicine to modern wellness. It was the fork in the road that led to health. As Robert Frost writes in his poem “The Road Less Traveled”…

The book is published through Harper Collins and is available in bookstores now. You can order a copy through our amazon.com link by clicking here. This will make a great gift for those in your life not yet taking that road less traveled.

“In simple and elegant ways, Dr. Robert A. Schuller and Douglas Di Siena D.C., offer practical steps to create balance in body, mind, and spirit. They open the door to a world of infinite possibilities inside your Being.” — Deepak Chopra
