Death By Ritalin

An April 16th Nando Media reports that a “medical examiner says years of using Ritalin, a drug used to treat hyperactive children, may have led to a 14-year-old boy’s death.”

The boy had collapsed at his home on March 21 as the result of a heart attack “likely caused by 10 years of taking Ritalin for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.” according to the report.

The report states that the changes that led to the boys death were gradual and affected blood vessels that supply the muscle of the heart. The family was reported to have said that the boy did occasionally complain of chest pains and a fast beating heart.

According to the article, other allegedly similar types of deaths in Ritalin users are being researched and the findings will be reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The medical examiner in the report stated that, “this is something that we have to share with the public and the professional people, too, that there is a great risk.” The examiner went on to say that, “there are millions receiving Ritalin and so few tests. Statistically it is not significant, but it is for that boy and his family.”
