We Are All Adjusting

By Super CA Lynne

This week my 5 year old said, “Mommy, you have the bestest job ever, you get to make people better.” In Tucker’s eyes when he wakes up in the middle of the night, then wakes me up in the middle of the night and says he needs an adjustment, I do my Mommy adjustment (until we can get to see Dr. D.) then he says he is better and goes back to sleep. Now I know that I didn’t physically adjust Tucker but his love and faith in me told him that I did.

And I guess that if intent can move a bone then he is well. If all the love in the world can move a bone then every time I touch, hug or hold my children, or tell my patients how great they look, or ask them how their day was or remember a conversation we had last time they were in and take part in making their lives just a little bit better and they start to heal, then I do have “the bestest job and I am adjusting.” We are all adjusting.

We need to take the time to see our lives through the eyes of a five-year-old. Tucker was in the yard this past weekend very excited with the first snow fall. He started to make snow angels and dogs, he told me he was giving them a spine so they could be well too. (our dog gets adjusted every week)

I guess we never realize the true impact we have on the life of a child. Chiropractic is my life and my family has always been a part of that. When I look around at other family members and friends who are not under care and see what their quality of life is like compared to my families it’s hard for me to understand why they are not under care. The good Lord knows how much I talk about Chiropractic at every family function so it is really hard for me to understand why they don’t get it. It sure makes me sleep easier at night knowing my kids have been raised in a Chiropractic family and they will pass that on to their children.

“You have to count on living every single day in a way you believe will make you feel good about your life. So that if it were over tomorrow, you’d be content with the way you lived today!”

Have a wonderful holiday season; enjoy your family and friends. I wish you peace, love, happiness and healing in 2002. You are doing a great job, keep spreading the love.

Chiropractic is Life!!!

Aspirin, ibuprofen and Your Health

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Two interesting articles appeared in yesterday’s news regarding the use of aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen, painkillers that are used by millions.

One article appeared on MSNBC and the headlines read, “don’t chase aspirin with ibuprofen” as a new study has found that the popular painkiller blocks the heart protecting effects of aspirin. The other article appeared on and was titled, “painkillers linked to kidney failure” as researchers have found that individuals with kidney disease or other ailments who regularly take aspirin or acetaminophen may be increasing their risk of developing kidney failure.

According to a new study, the pain reliever ibuprofen apparently blocks the heart protecting effects of aspirin. This may have major implications for millions of people who take daily doses of aspirin in hopes of having healthier hearts but also who take (often in daily doses) ibuprofen, commonly known in North America under the brand names of Advil and Motrin, to cope with conditions such as arthritis.

The MSNBC article features a quote from a cardiologist at the University of Pennsylvania who states, “it would not do you a lot of good to take one medication only to have another wipe out its effects.”

Representatives for drug companies suggested that both drugs could still be taken as long as they were taken at different times during the day.

The article which was featured on involved a study which showed a greater risk of chronic kidney failure in patients who regularly take either aspirin or acetaminophen. Earlier research has suggested similar side effects.

According to a New England Journal of Medicine study, people with kidney failure were 2.5 times more likely to have been regular users of aspirin and/or acetaminophen than those without kidney problems.

According to the article, more research is needed into whether the use of aspirin or acetaminophen can contribute to kidney failure. I see that often, “more research is needed.” Do you want to continue taking aspirin and/or acetaminophen or even ibuprofen daily until that data becomes available?

If you’re going to become a statistic, why not be one of those in the healthy group.

A Christmas Wish

By Sigafoose

Many years ago a child was born to represent mankind as humans on earth. He was a special child that grew into a special man, who at age 33 was crucified, and died, overcame death and arose as the king of the spirit world.

The king of the world is the evil one that comes out of mans thinking, If we could learn to overcome evil by overcoming our thinking, we could change ourselves and ultimately the world.

This Christmas as you sit with your family, think about and talk about your favorite Christmas and why. Let all the children and adults share. While you are at it why not ask your people, to write down their favorite Christmas and then post the answers on the bulletin board. For those of you that don’t celebrate Christmas, ask your people to write down their favorite day and why.

Now let me ask you what was your favorite day and or practice experience this year? Tell why and what made it so special and how did you feel inside? Now lets take all these things of good cheer and wrap them up and give them away to all everyday, for the rest of next year.

After the first of the year I will post several marketing hints, and you take the ones you like best and do one of them each month for the year. Work on and accomplish changing how and what you think, and only allow constructive abundant thots and words to come from you 24/7.

I will guard my thots and words as well and we can prove to the world we are special people with a special mission, to serve God, by serving masses of people principled chiropractic each day of the year, and to share with as many colleagues as possible, whether they accept or reject you.

Make it a priority to attend all Gatherings, and as many Higher Ground events as you can. See you and your family in the biggest dream of your life. Paste pictures and photos that match your wildest dreams and put them on the fridge door or on a bulletin board for dreams. Dream of your dreams, and visions, and dare to be different, to yourself, and the world.

Be the biggest and best you can be and let no one steal your dreams. Dreams are to look at and be had and it is no ones right or place to attempt to steal them from you. Think not of lack or defeat. And remember the only people that ever failed, are those that quit.

God will provide if you allow it, depend on it, and know it.
Keep the faith, turn the crank, and testify—Walk By Faith Not By Sight.

Deaths From Drug Errors

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

In case you thought it just happens in the United States, news reports today from London suggest that deaths from drug errors and side effects are sharply on the rise in the UK.

According to a report in today’s Yahoo News, the number of Britons dying in hospitals from medication prescribing errors and the adverse effects (side effects) from medications sharply rose from 200 in 1990 to 1,100 in the year 2000.

Deaths, and side effects are costing the National Health Service system in the UK millions of dollars each year not to mention the fact that people are dying as a result of drug use. According to the report, complications arising from medication are the most common cause of adverse events in hospital patients. Basically, what that says is that side effects from drugs are the most common cause of complications. Or in other words, the drugs people take to make them well are making them sicker.

It is estimated, according to the report, that hospitals in the UK spend $1.5 billion a year on prescription drugs. It was also mentioned that 7000 individual drug doses are administered each day in a typical hospital in that country. That’s a lot of drugs, and a lot of side effects many could do without.

I am a Chiropractic Soldier

By T.O. Morgan, D.C.

Dedicated to the Chiropractic Pioneers, Past, Present, and Future.

I am a chiropractic soldier. I fight medical degradation and ignorance about chiropractic. I have been taught by chiropractic warriors, trained by experience, tried by adversity and tested by fire. I am a volunteer in this army. No one made me go to chiropractic college, or practice chiropractic. I am enlisted for all eternity. I will either retire from this army, or be silenced by age, but I will never get out, sell out, be talked out or pushed out. I am faithful, reliable, capable and dependable. I know I can be used by God in this work, and I am there. If there is a patient who needs to be adjusted, I am there. If there is a D.C. who needs the teaching and counsel I can give, I am there. If there is a leadership role for me, I am there. If there is no leadership role, God can still use me in this work, because I am there.

I believe that God gave the Palmers the innate principle in chiropractic; that it was given for His people, and that God has factored me in this true “Health Plan.” I believe that my purpose is to adjust and clear out my patients, and instruct them about health and where it originates. I locate subluxations, adjust, and teach hope in innate healing concepts – whether they are rich or poor, whether they pay or not, whether they are appreciative or not. I do not work for money and no one can pay me for an adjustment if I so wish. I am committed, so passionate, so anxious to correct the next subluxation that my healing persona attracts large numbers of patients who need my adjustments. I believe that each patient who comes to me is from God, and that I have His hope with me in the exactness of His innate intelligence, to heal and maintain normal physiology. I stand for, and speak out for this principle and never accept a secondary role when it comes to sickness or health. I believe that everyone should be tested for subluxations and adjusted for life.

I am not a baby. I do not need to be pampered, petted, primed up, pumped up, picked up or pepped up. I do not need to be cuddled, cradled, cared for, or catered to. I am a chiropractic soldier.

No one has to call me to the office. No one has to remind me, write me, visit me, entice me or lure me. I am a chiropractic soldier. Whatever it takes to put the chiropractic message across, I am ready; to give and get it done. I am committed to this duty and I never give up. I do not let anyone make me negative about chiropractic. I do not lose faith in innate or the adjustment because healing or pain relief is not quick enough. No one can degrade chiropractic without me taking a stand, I cannot have my feelings hurt bad enough to turn me around. When I signed up for chiropractic I had no money. If I end up with nothing, I will still come out ahead. I will win because I am a chiropractic soldier. My God has and will continue to supply all of my needs. I take credit for the mistakes I have made and suffer through my; symptoms when I have over stressed my body. I am committed to being a better adjuster, a better doctor, a better encourager, a better teacher and a better student of the chiropractic principle.

Health politics cannot defeat chiropractic. Leaders cannot disillusion me, they cannot merge, mingle or maim the chiropractic principle enough to make me quit. Fraudulent practices in health care cannot weary me. Insurance companies who devalue the adjustment and long term care, cannot beat me. Money cannot change me or buy me. Governments cannot silence me, I am a chiropractic soldier.

I was given chiropractic as a life’s work. I will be faithful. Even death cannot destroy me, for I will live on in my family and friends who are soldiers and in the memory of those whom God has led me to help, encourage and train in this army. Together we will never give up and we will never turn around. We will never settle for drippings from the medical table. We will never let our healing principle be lost into medical treatments for symptoms. We will never stop until there is true unity in our ranks. We will never stop vital research of the subluxation complex. We are soldiers. Here we stand. @ 1:56 pm | Article ID: 1008626198

Sharon Gorman’s Monday Morning Message

I end each day by writing a gratitude list. I simply write down 5 things that I am grateful about from this day. Some of the things on my list are huge like that I am grateful for my relationship with my children and some of the things might seem trivial to most like that I am grateful that a particular patient referred a friend. For the most part I consider myself a grateful person yet by taking the time to put these thoughts in my mind before I go to sleep I am programming myself to create more things in my life that I am grateful for. Even on the days that don’t go the way I wanted them to go I find 5 things to be grateful for and sometimes I can put my day in perspective in the context of my life.

Another positive side effect of making this list every night is that I have become less dependent on other people to tell me I am doing a good job in life or that I should be grateful in my life because I have learned to acknowledge myself. This is a very powerful side effect. I don’t need to seek out people that will give me lots of outside approval. I don’t need to be stroked as much from other people many of which have their own motives in stroking me. I have come to trust my own inner voice, my innate. Me and God can become a majority. I can become more dependent on my relationship with God to guide me through my life and trust that I am safe walking with God. I don’t have to control my life anymore. I can lighten my load as I turn my burdens over to God. When I feel the unconditional love of God I can get to work. I can do what I feel is the next right thing and not have to ask for others opinions to guide my life. I am not near as needy in my relationship with other people. I am not in relationship with people so that I can try to fill that hole inside of me. I am in relationship with people so that I can share the abundance of love that fills my heart. I can love people unconditionally as the love that I feel from God is unconditional. I don’t have to guard myself from other people out of fear of them hurting me. No one can hurt me unless I give them permission to and the stronger I feel spiritually the less armor I feel it necessary to wear and the more open I can stay to give and receive love.

It’s easy to fall into that people pleasing trap when we aren’t connected with our source. Part of that comes from our desire to be accepted. That strong desire to be accepted comes from our low self esteem. We need to be accepted by the right person or group of people in our attempt to prove to the world that we fit in or that we are worthy. A prime example of this is teenagers. They see themselves in a better light if they are cool and fit in. Who are they trying to impress. The people that impress them. Us parents try to instill in them the confidence to do what they know is right and not just follow the crowd. If their relationship with God is strong they don’t feel the void. They are not as much in search for things outside of themselves to make them feel better. They are less likely to get involved with alcohol, drugs or gangs. They feel better about themselves. We are just big them. It’s time for me to grow up as I see that life is too short to waste any more time doing things that I know don’t work. It takes a lot of discipline to pray, meditate and do the things for me that keep me in constant contact with God. It takes discipline to write my grateful list every night because some nights I just don’t feel grateful. I once heard it said that you can either have a strong spiritual program and an easier life or an easier spiritual program and a harder life.

In this season of love and light please remember it is not about things, it is about people. Give yourself the gift of being gentle with yourself.

Love you and appreciate you,

Something For Your Spanish-Speaking Patients

by Michael Dorausch, D.C.

According to a news report today from Routers Health, the inability for doctors to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients may be undermining the health-care that Latinos receive across the United States.

A survey conducted among Spanish-speaking Latinos found that nearly one in five put off going to the doctor or avoided going to the doctor as a result of language barriers with an English-speaking health-care provider. Doctors on the other hand, stated that cost issues are keeping them from providing Spanish-speaking health-care personnel in their practices.

The article suggests that language is not the only factor that is hampering adequate health-care for Latinos. Access to health coverage and income factors play a role as well but according to the article, poor communication between the doctor and the patient is likely to play a greater role as America’s Spanish-speaking population continues to grow.

How does this affect chiropractors? How well are you communicating the message of chiropractic to the Spanish-speaking people in your community? Hopefully we can help. Just last week we finished the creation of a 30 minute video introduction to chiropractic that is entirely in Spanish. The video features doctor Luis Ocon (of Panama mission fame) introducing chiropractic to a roomful of new patients in his office.

The talk is a very principled one. Dr. Ocon uses flip charts from Reggie Gold, posters from Dr. Fred Schofield, and a white board to diagram the brain and spinal cord and explain the importance of vertebral subluxation correction.

This 30 minute educational video is available to view online (you must have a cable or DSL modem connection) on our chiropractic audio-video pages. The video is also available for purchase on VHS so that you can play it in your office. The cost for this digitally recorded and digitally edited 30 minute all Spanish video is only $49 (U.S. funds) plus shipping and handling. You can order the video online by clicking here or you can call us toll-free (U.S. and Canada only please) at 866 752-9230.

If you’re watching the video online, be sure to have the latest version of RealPlayer installed so that you can enjoy the best quality audio and video clarity and speed available. Click here for a direct link to the video page.

Tell the story, tell it often, and tell it in as many ways as you can.

T’was A Chiropractic Christmas

By Author Unknown (let me know if you know who it is)

T’was the day before Christmas, but there was no cheer.
No jingle bells jingled, no sound of reindeer.
The word had gone out that Santa was sick.
There would be no visit from jolly St. Nick.

The people were sad; no gaiety sounded.
For Christmas had come, but Santa was grounded.
He drove down the road, and what should he see?
But a sign for a doctor, who was a D.C.

Now Santa was not one to like a new tactic,
But all else had failed, so he tried Chiropractic.
He entered the office and saw at a glance,
in a place such as this, illness hasn’t a chance.

The office staff smiled, the music was sappy,
with all of the patients contented and happy.
In a very short time, to judge by the clock,
he was in the adjusting room, talking to Doc.

It must be the hurry, the tension and all,
I simply can’t seem to get on the ball.
Life used to be easy; just kids, toys and whistles,
now I dodge smog, spaceships and missiles.

And Doc, take a look at the size of this pack!
Have you any idea what it does to my back?
Poor Santa was miserable and just barely able,
with the help of the Doctor, to get on the table.

The Doctor was gentle; without a fuss or a tussle
he examined the vertebrae and relaxed every muscle.
He spotted trouble and then with a click,
started aligning the spine of old St. Nick.

Santa felt aches and pains slipping away
and in no time at all he began to feel gay.
The air was a tingle with new fallen snow
and a healthy Kris Kringle was rarin’ to go.

As he went out the door, he threw them a kiss;
why, it had been centuries since he felt good as this!
Then once more he shouldered the bag full of toys,
his heart overflowing with true Christmas joys.

Florida Officials Reject Proposal To Add “Injectables” To Chiropractic Scope

Forwarded by ICA Chiropractic News Service

A proposal to add the prescription and administration of injectable nutrients and supplements to the scope of chiropractic practice in the state of Florida was firmly rejected at a hearing in Orlando on Friday, December 7, 2001 when state officials informed the Florida Chiropractic Board that such a proposal was clearly outside the authority of the Board to approve. After hearing arguments from proponents of the addition of this allopathic medical procedure to the state’s chiropractic scope, discussion on the issue ended when the Board learned that only the Florida Legislature could mandate such a change. This blunt message was presented by a senior official from the Florida Board of Pharmacology, based on the reading of the law by the Office of the Florida Attorney General.

The International Chiropractors Association, in close cooperation with the Florida Chiropractic Society and allied educational institutions including Life University, Life Chiropractic College-West and Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic, were strongly opposed to the proposed amendment to the chiropractic scope because of the issues of public safety and chiropractic’s historic drugless, non-allopathic status as a true alternative to invasive, drug-based medical care. ICA was represented at the hearing by the Association’s newly elected Assembly Representatives for Florida, Armand M. Rossi, DC and Joseph W. Accurso, DC, who presented ICA’s position in a letter from ICA President, Dr. D.D. Humber, to the Chairman of the Florida Chiropractic Board, Dr. Gene E. Jenkins, Jr.

Dr. Humber outlined ICA’s position against the proposed scope expansion, telling the Florida Board:

ICA’s opposition to the injectables proposal is based on the clear understanding that the prescription and application of such substances constitutes the practice of allopathic medicine under Florida law.

This Association is extremely conscious of the need to maintain clear boundaries between the health professions for the protection of the public. The proposal to authorize doctors of chiropractic to prescribe and administer injectable substances raises such boundary issues on many levels. First among ICA’s concerns is the issue of safety and patient welfare. Doctors of chiropractic do not have such training as a part of their professional instruction and qualification processes. The injections process is one that requires extensive training not only on the safe administration of the procedure, but also on the proper maintenance, security and accountability for the materials and paraphernalia used in the process. No one should minimize the potential for injury, secondary infection and related complications that attend the administration of the injections process. Those risks are obviously proportional, according to the skills and experience of those administering the procedure. Doctors of chiropractic have none of the requisite skills as a matter of national definitions and educational processes.

Considering the risks in the direct injection of any substance, responsible people must ask whether any major health care gap is being filled by the addition of this authority. The ICA firmly believes that the range of oral, ingestible nutritional supports and supplements is so extensive and diverse that any general nutritional support is available via this medium… If the doctor of chiropractic is seeking to treat a specific disease through such procedures, the line between professions and professional competence has been clearly crossed, and such persons are illegally attempting to practice allopathic medicine.

The public is entitled to clear definitions between health professions and to the full protection of the regulatory process to assure that any health professional holding themselves out as qualified to perform any service, is licensed and qualified at the highest standard…The International Chiropractors Association promotes and supports a drugless chiropractic profession, separate and distinct from the practice of medicine. The injectable proposals before the Florida Board of Chiropractic Medicine blur the distinctions between professions to the detriment of public health and safety and should be rejected.

The proposal to expand chiropractic scope to include injectables was put forward by a group calling itself the Florida Chiropractic Physicians Association, and supported by a few fringe individuals, including individuals who were in the seminar business, teaching injection procedures. “I am very pleased to see that the law was enforced in Florida and that this initiative received the reception that it did,” said Dr. Humber. “ICA will be standing by to cooperate with the Florida Chiropractic Society and other groups, educational institutions and dedicated doctors of chiropractic to lobby against any legislative change that those behind this medical move will likely propose, now that the administrative route has been closed.”

– – – – – – – –
Editors Note: Many principled DCs worked long and hard (and at great personal expense) to see this proposed addition to the scope of practice in Florida defeated. As I have said before, events that occur in states like Florida, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York shape the profession for the future. This is not just a Florida issue… it is a principled chiropractic issue. It’s never just a Canada issue or a California issue, it’s a chiropractic issue. Get off your ass and get involved. @ 7:29 pm | Article ID: 1008127786

Biological Warfare: the Best Defense is You

By Michael Dorausch, D.C.

Scientists are saying today what chiropractors have been suggesting for quite some time, the best protection against biological weapons are lurking within each of us.

Every healthy body has an immune system that knows, long before our minds do, when we’ve been invaded by a nasty bug.

According to an article in today’s Nando Times, researchers are trying to boost the body’s ability to resist invading pathogens rather than using the conventional approach of using vaccines which attempt to manipulate the body’s defenses.

This concept of boosting the body’s nonspecific immunity, according to the article, has been accepted only recently by science. People are more familiar with the method of using vaccines to protect against disease. When people think about immunity, they are often referring to an acquired immunity in which the body remembers old invaders and becomes resistant to them.

But what scientists are studying now is a lesser known immunity which they call “innate immunity” or the primitive physiological response that is active in the body from birth. The job of this “innate” is to unleash cells whose role it is to destroy anything that is not self.

The remainder of the article talks about ways the scientists are planning to create drugs (pills, powders, and potions) in order to stimulate this innate immunity in an individual. This is where they lose me. Aren’t drugs non self? If you give drugs to an individual with an optimally functioning nervous system and immune system, will those drugs (which are non self) provide better health or decreased health? Perhaps science will someday find out.
